The National Plan to Reduce Violence against Women and their Children 2010-2022 Violence against women means “any act of gender-based violence that results in, or is likely to result in, physical, sexual or psychological harm or suffering to women, including threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether occurring in public or in private life.” (p3). Domestic violence refers to acts of violence that occur between people who have or have had an intimate relationship. A central element is an ongoing pattern of behaviour aimed at controlling a partner through fear. Domestic violence includes: physical, sexual, emotional and psychological abuse. Psychological and emotional abuse can include: control of finances, isolation from family and friends, continual humiliation, threats against children or being threatened with injury or death. Family violence refers to violence between family members, including marital and kinship relationships. From my perspective boys schools in particular need to start raising awareness of this significant social problem. It is a social and health issue as damaging as smoking and drink driving. Our young men need to be trained in skills to establish respectful relationships with girls and women so that the intergenerational cycle of gendered crimes of violence is broken. Our High Resolves boys showed the way last year with their PowerPoint presentation on the international plight of women. Now we should focus on our own society and confront the problem. Only long term educational interventions, supported by government-financed professional support coupled with more resolute legal responses, can lead to a significant reduction in violence against women.

Year 12 Interviews Interviews are booked online through the Student Portal. Students should access the Careers Interviews section of the Student Portal and select a time for interview. There are two slots per period that the Careers Adviser is available.
Wet Weather Information – Saturday SportFor regular updates on Saturday sport during times of inclement weather, parents and students are asked to check the school’s website throughout the day. The information can be found by going to the school’s website at then by clicking on the fixture details under the heading of ‘Upcoming events’ eg Saturday, May 1 SHS v NC. Cancellations can then be found by scrolling down the page to the specific sport and team. If there is no information specific to sport cancellations then assume by default that sport will go ahead. Please note that the current ‘Sports Wet Weather line’ is inoperable.
News From LatinOn Monday, 9th March, students of Latin from Years 9-12 sat the National Latin Exam, an international examination organised annually by the University of Mary Washington, Virginia, USA. The results this year were pleasing, with eleven boys each achieving a Gold Medal and ‘summa cum laude’ certificate, and thirteen boys achieving Silver medals, and a ‘maxima cum laude’ certificate each. The recipients of medals are as follows:
Year 9 Latin: Silver medal: Richard Cao, Ray Cheng, Peter Choi, George Farrugia, Henry Feng, Michael Hauser, Riley Irwin, Mesbaah Lalee, Robert Tan, Jens Waring

Year 12 Latin: Silver medal: Bryan Do, Matthew So The six gold medallists from Year 12 have also been offered the opportunity to apply for a University Scholarship valued at US$1,000.
Indeed, students of Classics at Sydney High are offered a number of opportunities to excel in a
field beyond the school. Another annual competition is the annual Latin and Greek reading
competition. This is available to Years 9-12 and will appeal to the orators among you. Students
are required to recite a passage of verse or prose in Latin or Greek. Judges are usually
academics. Last year, the reading competition for seniors was held at the University of Sydney.
Details of this year’s reading competitions will be provided soon.

Thank you students and staff for your support of High canteen!! Our manager, Karen and Tracey are always looking to keep the menu interesting with a wide range of healthy, cheap food options and are always open to new suggestions. So if you know of a food item that you think would be good for our menu that is healthy and affordable, let canteen know.

It is always lovely as well when we receive unexpected help from people outside the school
community. Just recently, we had Sky Suen in – a student dietitian who not only volunteered
for the day to have experience in canteen, but is also happy to help out again!! Thanks for your
help that day, Sky. We certainly do have a diverse range of people helping – Dads, mums,
grandparents, siblings, friends, tertiary and senior students... You are all very much needed and
appreciated.

CHECK THE CATALOGUE for AVAILABILITY INFORMATION What’s Up in the McDonald Senior Library?Now that the exams are finished there will be a very brief reprieve for Year 12 students prior to final assessments and then Trial HSC exams and they as well as Year 10 and 11 will have opportunities to borrow lots of brand new resources. These can supplement the required texts and provide related texts for those boys still searching for something relevant or provide terrific reads for pure pleasure! Books requested and next in series have arrived and will be processed and put out for borrowing as soon as we can, so if you are waiting for the next Assassin title or the second title to follow Patrick Rothfuss’s “In the Name of the Wind” ask the librarians when they’ll be ready. These materials will be displayed in the Senior Library and will be available for loan. So watch the display stand near the circulation (borrowing) desk!
Speaking of new things…keep your eyes peeled for an exciting new lunchtime mystery event
to be held in the Senior Library this term! Posters will be around the school to advertise this

You need JavaScript enabled to view it Phillip J Day Scholarship DinnerAll parents are invited to attend the Phillip J Day Scholarship Dinner - 7.00 pm, Tuesday 31 May 2011 in the Great Hall. Held every two years, this event is the major fund-raiser for The Phillip J Day Memorial Scholarship Trust - established in 2007 in memory of Mr Phillip Day - to provide outstanding Sydney Boys High School students with financial assistance to maximise their opportunities whilst a student at the school. The scholarship is awarded each year to a student from any year within the school with selection criteria including outstanding talent in a particular area of academic or co-curricular endeavour, particularly good all round achiever or a student with special needs, financial or otherwise. Phillip John Day (1965) was a much esteemed Old Boy, Head Teacher of Social Sciences(1984-2006) and mentor to a generation of High boys. The Scholarship is intended to perpetuate the ideals of mentorship. This year's dinner is hosted by Daniel McPherson (Class of 1997), host of Dancing with the Stars, City Homicide and The Bill – with guest speaker Tom Cusbert (Class of 2002), University Medalist (2008). Cost is $60.00 per person and is tax deductible as a professional learning opportunity. You can put a table of 8 to 10 together or join an existing table. It is a terrific opportunity for parents to mix socially with a wide cross-section of the High community including many Old Boys, staff and parents from other schools who had an association with Phil Day, while supporting this very worthwhile initiative for talented students.

Peer Mediation at SBHSHey got a problem? Get peer mediated! Peer mediation is a program run by a select group of Year 11 students which seeks to solve conflict between students without getting teachers involved. The program seeks to help the students resolve their issues while under the guidance of the Year 11 students. The program is confidential and stays between the peer mediators (Year 11 students) and the students who have a problem with each other.

Debating Co Payments
Some students have asked if the co-payment is for a term or for the year. The co –payment
is for the whole year. Doesn’t that reflect excellent value for money? The high quality
coaching goes on for three full terms and for the FED and Eastside teams we are the only school
which rotates our team members. Although this means we are not as successful as we could be with
one consistent team, it does mean that the majority of our debaters get an opportunity to debate
in a real competition each year.

Music NotesYear 7 New InstrumentalistsALL New Year 7 students who began lessons on an instrument last term are encouraged to join the Training Concert Band (Woodwind/Brass/Percussion) and Junior String Ensemble (Strings) this term.
