High Talent
Congratulations to Declan Gorey (Year 12) who won a place on the Australian Olympiad Team for Mathematics – a great effort! Declan will represent Australia in Amsterdam in July. Emmett Naar (Year 12) and Daniel Jones (Year 11) were members of the NSW Metropolitan basketball team that won the U18 National Championships. Good work, boys! Lloyd Perris (Year 11) was selected in the AFL U16s NSW team to compete at the National Championships in Tasmania. Well done, Lloyd.

P&C Donation
This week the school received cheques from the P & C to the value of $66,916.32. The funds have been earmarked for projects completed or currently underway. Data projector and sound system installation ($50,000), senior library security upgrade ($10,000), a contribution to the air conditioning in classrooms ($5,000). Contribution to the purchase of a new double bass ($1916.32). On your behalf I would like to thank our Canteen Team - Tracey and Karen, the volunteer parents, Katrina Morrow, Kate Price and the Committee and the volunteer Prefects. The success of the group contributes to the very impressive profitability of the School Canteen. All the proceeds are reinvested in facilities, equipment and services for the boys.

Phillip Day Memorial Scholarship Dinner
To perpetuate the memory of our colleague and to assist a student financially in his name, we are holding the second fundraising dinner on May 31 in the Great Hall. Mr Barris is coordinating the event. Tickets are $60 pp. Phil loved teaching economics, nurturing High boys and swimming. Our guests represent those interests well. Hosted by high profile actor and presenter, Daniel McPherson (1997) and featuring an address by university medallist, Tom Cusbert (2002), the evening promises to be both entertaining and informative. I urge the High community to support this event and to spread the word to the wider community.

Scholarships worth $1200 each have been awarded to: Alexander Belokopytov (2009), Terence Pham (2010) and Jesse Nixon (2011). The Scholarship Fund needs >$50k. in order to be self-sustaining. Only 25% of the interest from the fund can be used for scholarships each year. Three-quarters of the interest is reinvested to grow the Fund. In the future the goal is to have a number of scholarships to award. If you would like to help future deserving students in public education to access the full range of opportunities available at High please support our scholarship fundraising initiative. Donations are tax deductible and can be made through our website scholarship fund.

Australian Olympiads
The Australian Mathematics Trust and Australian Science Innovations conduct the annual Australian Mathematics and Science Olympiads. The aim is to identify and train Australia’s most talented students in these disciplines. Ultimately, a team is selected to represent Australia in Biology, Chemistry, Informatics, Mathematics and Physics. I urge students with a passion for these areas of study to find out more about how to get involved in the competitions that feed into the identification programs.

Electrical Substation
The long awaited triplex cable has arrived! The plan is to start installing the cable from May 10. The new substation should be commissioned by June 18. Given that we have installed reverse cycle air conditioning in a number of areas, I trust our new capacity will see us through winter trouble free this year.

Building Fund Reaches First Milestone
Thanks to the continuing generosity of the High community over seven years, the total funds held by the Sydney Boys High School Building Fund on term deposit now exceed $1,000,000. We now have to quicken the pace of fundraising so that the second target of $2m. is reached in a considerably shorter time than it took to achieve the first one. Also, it is satisfying to realise that during the course of those same years $376,450 have been spent directly on building refurbishment to improve the learning environment for the boys. In addition, the Centennial Building Fund has spent a similar amount maintaining and enhancing school facilities under its control.

Our capital raising program is serving its dual purpose well – to enhance the existing school buildings and to save for future capital building work projects. If you can help us reach our goal faster, please make a tax deductible donation on the form located on multi-purpose centre.

Peer Mediation at SBHS

Hey got a problem? Get peer mediated! Peer mediation is a program run by a select group of Year 11 students which seeks to solve conflict between students without getting teachers involved.

The program seeks to help the students resolve their issues while under the guidance of the Year 11 students. The program is confidential and stays between the peer mediators (Year 11 students) and the students who have a problem with each other.

How it works
When two students have a disagreement they are to email the following address: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. From this point Ms Barr will receive the request and will appoint two Peer Mediators to accompany the disputers in a closed off room, whereby the two students will eventually resolve their problem and sign an agreement to not create more problems with each other.

Year 12 Interviews

All Year 12 are required to have an interview with the Careers Adviser during Term 2 or Term 3 to discuss all aspects of post-school education including ATAR, UAC, scholarships, preferences etc.

Interviews are booked online through the Student Portal. Students should access the Careers Interviews section of the Student Portal and select a time for interview. There are two slots per period that the Careers Adviser is available.

Wet Weather Information – Saturday Sport

For regular updates on Saturday sport during times of inclement weather, parents and students are asked to check the school’s website throughout the day. The information can be found by going to the school’s website at then by clicking on the fixture details under the heading of ‘Upcoming events’ eg Saturday, May 1 SHS v NC. Cancellations can then be found by scrolling down the page to the specific sport and team. If there is no information specific to sport cancellations then assume by default that sport will go ahead. Please note that the current ‘Sports Wet Weather line’ is inoperable.

Sports Donations

GPS sports competition is very demanding on people and resources. At High we have ongoing needs for facilities development, equipment and development through expert coaching. If you would like to help through a tax deductible donation for a particular sport, the appropriate form can be posted to you by calling 9361 6910. Alternatively, you can go to our website click on Sport /Sports Donations to download either Development Donation Form or Equipment and Facility Donation Form.

OLD BOYS COLLECTION – THANK YOU
Our 2 libraries have a special collection called the Old Boys Collection which is a bay of books written by our Old Boys.

Ian Heads, sports journalist and Old Boy has been very thoughtful and has donated many of his books over the years. This week his wife, Joy, came in with two of Ian’s latest works: And the Crowd Went Wild, and, Tales from Coathanger City (Ten Years of Tom Brock lectures).

Parents Information Evening

This meeting on the last Thursday of term was very well attended. Thank you to those new parents who made the effort to attend. I would particularly like to thank the parents of older boys who came along to share their experiences and expertise with us all. It was a very successful evening and an opportunity for parents to meet each other and have all their questions answered.

We have an excellent Debating Supporters Group with very enthusiastic parents who give their valuable time and effort to supporting debating at High in a whole range of ways. GPS

Try outs for GPS have been completed for Years 10 – 12 and the teams have been selected. For those boys who have not been successful this year we are offering the opportunity to take part in the UNYA competition and are dedicating a coach to work with students on this. Students need to see me to express their interest in this very worthwhile alternative.

Try outs for Years 7 -9 GPS teams will take place over the following weeks. Students who want to try out MUST have either emailed their coach or have signed up on the Debating Noticeboard. When try outs take place coaching is suspended and those students not wishing to get involved in GPS will leave school at 3.20. When all the GPS teams have been chosen those who are in the GPS teams will be coached separately to the other students. For those who are not involved in GPS there will be an alternative coaching program consisting of workshops and social debates – both internal and against other schools.

Music Notes

ANZAC Day March

Congratulations to all the students who performed in the ANZAC Day march last Monday as part of the march in the city (through the pouring rain). The Music staff and parents are very proud of our boys for all their hard work and dedication. You represented the school wonderfully.

Music Parking

Thank you to all the parents and students who gave up their time and helped out with the Music parking during the holidays. Your efforts are much appreciated as it raises valuable funds for the Music performance Program.

Year 7 New Instrumentalists

ALL New Year 7 students who began lessons on an instrument last term are encouraged to join the Training Concert Band (Woodwind/Brass/Percussion) and Junior String Ensemble (Strings) this term. Please see below the rehearsal timetable and rooms and turn up with your instruments. Award scheme points apply!

Music Performance Co-Payments

Please arrange to make Music Co-payments ASAP as they are needed to fund the ensembles. Letters have been sent out to students in the Music Performance Program. We appreciate your co-operation in this matter.
