High Notes, Vol 12 No 11, April 29 2011

From the Principal
Welcome back to Term 2
Welcome all students and staff to the busiest term of the
year. Years 12 and 9 have commenced their assessment examinations and they will be followed by
Years 11 and 10 next week. From then on teachers are busy assessing students and reporting on
their progress. Everyone in the school community needs to focus on good communication with
stakeholders during this important term. We are emphasising: listening to student voice keeping
more scores more often explicit teaching of literacy across the curriculum
High Talent
Chris Morrow was selected in the Australian U19 Volleyball team to tour
Thailand. Chris is the only NSW player to make the squad. The Australian team finished 4th at the
Asian Volleyball championships in the U21 division. Congratulations! Rostrum ‘Voice of
Youth’ local finals – winners: Nishant Paul & Nakul Bhagwat (Year 12) and Kushaal
Vyas (Year 10). Well done boys! In the National Latin Examination six students achieved gold
medal awards – Samuel Beston, Lawrence Cai, Declan Gorey, Ryan Gu and Jeffrey Tang.
Excellent results, boys! CHS Sailing Regatta results were strong this year – In Laser
Radials ( Marcus James was 2nd and Ennes Mehmedbasic 3rd . In Pacers for the Joint Coal Board
Trophy, Daniel Fang and Dexter Gordon retained the trophy for High, followed by David Evans and
Kai Matsumoto, with Darren Taing and Tiger Zhang, 3rd. Congratulations to all competitors and
thank you to Richard James, the Sailing Committee and Graham Moody for giving up their holidays
to make a High team participation possible. Well done again to High’s Marching Band for
their performance at the Anzac Day March. Given the weather I was particularly proud to see them
marching and playing in their uniforms, oblivious to the conditions. They were a credit to
themselves and the school.
Staff Changes
Anna Barry has been appointed to replace Mary Boukatos in English and
Andrew Carman has been appointed to replace Michael Smith in Science. Eleanor Hanlon is relieving
for Claire Reemst who is on long service leave for all of term two.
Rowing Results
Head of the River. Many boys in the squad were struck down
with a virus during their last week of preparation, weakening their capacity to get the best out
of their boats. The Year 10 second VIII had a scratch crew with a few boys very new to sweep oar
rowing. They rowed out the race and courageously finished. The first Year 10 VIII also found the
going tough. The second VIII had the shed’s best row at 10.45% off the pace. The 1st VIII
could not capitalise on a favoured lane draw and finished in 6.27.84. Unfortunately, we could not
break the 10% barrier this year. I encourage more boys to get involved in rowing to support the
school and help restore our competitiveness in this important sport.
Congratulations to all competitors in the CHS Championships.
Gold medal performances were achieved in: Championship Mens Coxless Quad scull ( Purcal,
Andrews Eveleigh Caetano); U 16 Single scull (Comninos); U15 Double scull ( Zhang, Yi); U15
Coxless Quad scull (Tan, Nixon, Zhang, Yi); U16 Coxless Quad scull (Trang, Guan, Fang, Comninos);

Rifle Shooting
̽»¨ÊÓƵ Rifle Club coaching seminar
The ̽»¨ÊÓƵ Rifle Club was
honoured to host a legend of Australian rifle shooting who delivered a coaching seminar for
students at the ANZAC Rifle Range on 9 April 2011.
Seminar presenter Don Brooks is a three time Australian Olympian (1972, 1976 and 1988); a three
times Australian Commonwealth Games representative (1974, 1978 and 1986); smallbore world
champion and world record holder.
He was, therefore, eminently qualified to deliver an excellent presentation on building a perfect
shooting position, and the elements of sports psychology used by elite level shooters.
The seminar comprised classroom lectures and a fullbore range shooting session at 300m.
The lessons learned by all who attended will serve them well for the remainder of their shooting
careers.
Old boys Ishan Nadkarni, Daniel Comben and Sam Kremer assisted with the conduct of the day.
Thanks are also due to our magnificent Shooting Master, Cathy Meaney.
Kind regards,
Sam Kremer

At the end of term 1 the first practical assessments were completed. In recognition of our Term 1

is hoped that this will inspire more students to higher efforts. A permanent board similar to the
