Valé Terry Ryan (1955-2011)
The High community was shocked by the sudden, untimely passing of Terry Ryan, a long-serving PE Teacher at High (1981-2010). As I understand it, early in December Terry complained of pain in the groin and hip. After visiting his GP he was referred to a specialist and following a series of tests, was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer in various parts of his body. He succumbed to his illness on January 4, just a week after his fifty-fifth birthday.

Terry was a dedicated PE teacher. He was very involved in expanding the 1.6km run program at High where boys benchmark their performance and are tested several times in the year to measure improvement. Terry was the mainstay of High’s ‘Learn to swim’ program for many years. He managed Junior GPS Tennis teams. He gave a lot of his time as co-driver and mentor on several trips in the school bus to Boggabilla. He became quite adept at changing bus tyres! Terry loved swimming, fishing and rugby league. He regularly worked out at the school weights room with TJ.

Terry was passionate about sport. I enjoyed annual conversations with him about the strengths and weaknesses of various sports at the national, local and school level. He had survived a serious accident when knocked off his bike by a vehicle and more recently, a spinal operation to repair disc problems. He was looking forward to resuming work full time. Terry will be sadly missed by his many friends at High but most intensely by Sue McGuinness, his partner, who retired a few years ago from the SASS staff at High.

Welcome to Term 1, 2011
Welcome to our new staff, parents and students. Thank you for choosing High for your education. This year the theme is ‘Making a difference through opportunity’. At High we pride ourselves on the variety of supervised co-curricular activities that we offer our students. We are seeking ways to provide more opportunities within the regular curriculum too. Our course offerings are under constant review, in response to student preferences. Students have the opportunity to customise their academic pathways through acceleration options. Choices are offered in every academic year’s curriculum pattern. This year half of the school will have laptops. Research and communication opportunities will be increased for many boys. We will try to provide opportunities for choices within courses – topics, assessment forms, extension work etc. We want to have more opportunities for students to have their voices heard. Apart from a wide range of leadership opportunities, initiatives like voting for Prefects on line and student on line surveys give individuals an opportunity to be involved in school life. We hope to increase these opportunities during 2011. If you have ideas about how the school staff could communicate better with their students or if you have issues you would like to see addressed, please contact the SRC or me directly. I want to build the capacity of students to see themselves as partners in their learning, not just consuming customers.

Staff Changes
On behalf of you all I offer a warm welcome to new staff members, both permanent and temporary, who are working with us at High this year. Permanent teachers appointed this year are Rhiannon Davis (replacing Mark Jones - History) and Kerryn Ibbott (Brian Deeming - Science). School caps at PE
School caps must be worn by students in Years 7 & 8 in PE. The policy was introduced last year for Year 7and we are rolling it through the Junior School. We are in heat wave conditions. The sun’s effects can be serious if exposure is prolonged. Students in outdoor activities generally are exhorted to wear hats.

Student Support Service

Welcome back to all our students and parents and a particular welcome to parents of Year 7. In your diaries it states that Mr Codey is the Anti-Racist Contact Officer but I will be replacing him this year. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr Codey for his diligent and dedicated work in this important area of school life.

At High we pride ourselves on our multi-racial community and we maintain racial harmony because we are tolerant and thoughtful people. It is important that everyone plays their part in this and is respectful towards each other and considerate of our many differences.

If you are in the unfortunate position of feeling that you have been the victim of racism then you should report it to me. I will deal with your concerns confidentially. Please note that we do not tolerate racism at High.

Anzac Day - Joint War Theme Study

History and English

It has been amazing how much of our fiction is about war. We have found 125 books so far.

The Andrews Library has been working with the students in finding and “tagging” (putting in subject added entries to the Library Catalogue) for a joint History/ English Anzac Day unit of work on war.

Thanks to the boys and teachers who worked co-operatively with the Librarian on this.

Debating

Welcome back to debaters and parents. I would like to introduce myself as the new MIC of Debating and would like to take this opportunity to thank Dana Quick for her passion and hard work over the last few years as MIC. Ms Quick will now be the Coach Coordinator. Between us we think we can deliver a fantastic program for Debaters – particularly for the younger years. I would like to encourage Year 7s to consider taking part in Debating at High.

From the Canteen

A very warm – literally speaking - welcome to all new boys and parents to Sydney High – and welcome back to everyone else.

IMPORTANT: Boys please stay hydrated.
With the high temps we are currently experiencing, it is important you do not allow yourself to dehydrate. You need to be drinking at least 2 litres of water each day to keep your body temp down and allow your body and brain to function properly – particularly with the level of physical and mental exercise expected of boys at High.
Use the bubblers or take advantage of the wide variety of refreshing cold drinks we have at canteen!!

Canteen Prices:
We have only had a few price increases this year from 2010. Any price increases in pre-packaged or processed foods we pass on to the consumer each year. We sell these goods at a marked up price so that we can then discount all food that is freshly prepared at canteen. This allows us to keep the healthiest food options as cheap as possible for our boys. We have had virtually no price increase for much of our fresh food for the last 3 years!!

It is thanks to the efforts of our canteen managers – Karen and Tracey – with the help of our volunteer parents that we can offer such a wide range of fresh food options to the boys. To keep doing this, we do need your help.

We appreciate how busy life can be for today’s parents, which is why we’d especially like to thank our loyal volunteers for their contribution to the smooth running of the canteen. The canteen at High is the main income income source of the P&C for allocation to school projects as decided by Dr Jaggar.

It is lovely to see new parents and names on the canteen roster for this year – THANK YOU so much We like to show our appreciation by rewarding our volunteers with the chance to win a $10 Canteen voucher for their sons to spend at canteen. All volunteers have to do is turn up for duty as usual and sign the duty roster book. A draw will be held each month for the lucky voucher winner. Remember, if you find you can’t make your shift, just call a fellow parent on the roster and arrange a swap.

Thank you to all our new parents who attended the New Parent Welcome and Information night last Tuesday. The evening was very informative and enjoyed by all from many accounts. Information covered on the evening will be posted on the P&C web pages for those who could not attend.

Thank you to the staff members who were able to come. Your extra time was obviously very appreciated by our new parents.

Thank you to the Sailing Committee and students from the Sailing program, whose obvious catering and serving skills were greatly appreciated by us all. This is a huge contribution to our community - thank you for your ongoing help.

Set up Your Individual Parent Portal Login

The Parents Portal on the school website is now accessed by individual parent logins. To create a personal account you will require the following two pieces of information:

1. The Family Correspondence Email address you supplied at enrolment.
2. The Student ID Number of your son/ward as printed on his timetable. If you have multiple children attending the school, any ID Number will suffice.

If you have trouble recalling the email address you supplied, your son can tell you by looking up the My Details section of the Student Portal. Alternatively, contact the school Administrative Office.

Once you have these two pieces of information, create a personal Parent Portal Account:

1. Go to the school website
2. Click Intranet Login in the bottom left-hand menu
3. Click parent registration on the bottom right-hand corner of the screen that has opened and follow the instructions.
4. Securely store the individual username and password you have created to access the Parents Portal.

Once you have a personal account, you will be able to see:

• Absences
• Library Borrowings
• Carnival Results
• Laptop Details
• Timetable

for your son/ward in the same fashion he can on the Student Portal.

• Sydney High Rowing will host the regatta on Saturday March 26th. We will need help from parents with this event.
• The GPS Head of the River will be held at Sydney International Regatta Centre on Saturday 2nd April. All rowers and families are encouraged to attend this prestigious event.
• Crews, including Junior, Year 10 and Senior rowers, will be selected to represent High in the NSW CHS Championships at Grafton on Monday 4th and Tuesday 5th April.

Other Events this Term –

• Year 10 rowers will be going to Melbourne with Mr Con Barris, Mitch Estens and Joe Banh on Tuesday 1st March returning Saturday 5th March.
• Rowing Boatshed Dinner is in the Great Hall on Wednesday 23rd March.
• GPS Rowing Assembly is on Friday 1st April.

Good News – Most of you would know by now the new state-of-the-art pontoon is installed and operational. This will make a big difference with getting 16 crews on and off the water efficiently.

The 2011 Taree Rowing Camp

After the success of last year’s trip to Taree, the Sydney Boys High Senior Rowers travelled up north in expectation of a tough 6 days of rowing. The Croker family has been nice enough to let us use their facilities for two years running, and upon arrival the boys spread out across the farm to set up their tents. From here we headed straight into training on the Manning River, its flat water giving us the opportunity to make large improvements in our rowing. The last spot of the 1st VIII was finally chosen on the 2nd day of camp, enabling members of the 1st and 2nd VIIIs to commence training in their respective crews. Training together as a crew is vital, and over the course of the camp both crews were able to make significant improvements to their technique whilst also improving in strength and fitness. The long endurance rows took place before breakfast, followed by a technical session, a large break throughout the day which was topped off with a speed session in the late afternoon. The longest row was a row into the town of Taree, 15 kilometres of perfect water for technical work, followed by a time trial on the return leg. All up a gruelling 30 kilometres, which improved both our mental and physical endurance. Downtime during the camp was spent playing cards, eating, sleeping and at the beach, proving to be a fun experience with the boys as well as beneficial to our rowing.

Many thanks must go to the Croker family for letting us use their facilities, the parents for cooking the meals that kept the boys going, the rowing committee for organising such an important camp, and the coaches Oliver Wilson and Shahar Merom; without these people’s help the camp would not be possible.

Swimming Carnival 2011

Memo to Parents

The 2011 School Swimming Carnival will be held at the
Des Renford Aquatic Centre (Heffron Park Pool) Robey Street Maroubra on
MONDAY FEBRUARY 14 2011

The carnival will commence at 8:50 am and finish by 2:45 pm (approximately).

Buses will be provided for Year 7 at a cost of $5 payable on the day and covers bus travel ($3) and pool entry ($2) and will leave from Cleveland Street at 8:30 am and return to school at 3:00pm. Students in Year 7 can make their own way to the venue if they wish to do so.

Students in Years 8-12 will make their own way to and from the Swimming Pool ($2 entry fee applies on entry to venue).

Public transport is available from Central Station to Maroubra Junction and Eastgardens.

The pool is located between Bunnerong Road and Anzac Parade, with the entry located on Robey Street.

School uniform is NOT required. (House colours) and sun protective clothing should be worn by students as shady areas are limited. Food will be on sale from the canteen at the pool. The Carnival will be held "rain, hail or shine!".

Roll call will take place at the venue. Students will be required to scan on entry.

School Student Transport Scheme (SSTS)

School Student Code of Conduct – Students travelling on buses must:-

• Dip school bus pass or pay the fare when joining the bus. This is particularly important as the data collected from the on bus fare collection system may be used for service planning purposes
• Use school specials when provided
• Vacate seats for adults when requested
• Follow the driver’s instructions about safety on the bus
• Respect the needs and comfort of other passengers
• Behave appropriately at all times (e.g. no offensive language, no throwing things)
• Protect bus property (e.g. no vandalism)

Students are reminded to:-

• Only use the school bus pass for its intended purpose i.e. for travel between home and school (does not include travel to and from sporting activities)
• Maintain possession of the school bus pass at all times.

During 2011, authorised officers will be deployed to inspect Code of Conduct compliance on school bus services in the Eastern Region. Students who are found to have breached their obligations may lose their travel entitlement and possibly incur an infringement.

From the Office

Letters Re Absence/Lateness/ Early Leave
When your son returns to school from being absent he is required to provide a letter of explanation signed by a parent or guardian. If your son is going to be late for school a note is also required. Alternatively you may contact the school by phone on 9361 6910 and dial “4” for the absentee line.

If your son has an early leave note he is required to have his note signed by either Mr Barris, Mr Dowdell or Mr Prorellis before 8:55am and handed in to the Main Office immediately after. Each letter should be signed by a parent or guardian with the name, date and roll class of your son printed clearly. Your son needs to pick up a leave pass from the Main Office before he leaves the school.

Leave
If you require leave for your son, please apply in writing and address your application to the Principal, Dr Jaggar, stating the reason and length of time of the leave. Your son must then present this application to Dr Jaggar for permission for the leave. Please remember to apply before the leave and not after.

The Principal must approve all leave applications.
