High Notes, Vol 11 No 9, March 26 2010

From the Principal
High Talent
Combined GPS basketball representatives from High this year were:
Andrija Dumovic, Emmett Naar (first grade) and Daniel Jones, Joshua Sutton and Stephen Yoon
(second grade). Congratulations! Combined GPS Swimming Representatives from High this year were:
17 years – Jack Musgrove, 16 years – Max Chien, 14 years – Darren Chien, Eugene
Lee, Dominic Mah, 13 years – Leonard Mah, 12 years – Kazuo Nakamura. Zone Age
Champions were: 12 Years – Kazuo Nakamura, 13 years – Leonard Mah, 15 years –
Shaun Pak, 16 years – Max Chien. What a great effort from the whole team!
It was inspiring to see the fighting spirit of the tennis GPS teams in first and second grade.
The boys fought hard at the tail end of the season to both finish 6th in the competition. Arman
Abdollahi (Year 11) was selected in the Combined GPS team at No 8. Patrick Rynsaardt (Year 9) was
chosen as a reserve. With a young squad and rigorous training planned, we hope to see a big
improvement in 2011 for High tennis. Well done to Hayden Rabone (Year 9) who won a bronze medal
for U15 fencing at the Roberta Nutt Shield Competition. Congratulations to Michael Do, recently
promoted to Cadet Under Officer. Kushall Vyas (Year 9) won his heat in the Rostrum Voice of Youth
Competition and John Aclis (Year 12) was runner up in his division as was Aashray Narula in Year
7. A good effort, boys!
Regional Swimming Team
After a very successful Zone carnival where High was again
Champion School, a very large team qualified for the Regional carnival, held on Monday. Some CHS
rowers could not go due to rowing commitments at SIRC. Competing for High were: M Ambrose, D
Chen, J Jiang, D Luo, J Musgrove, J Suh (Year 12); J Dobrowolski, K Gunaratne, A Ye (Year 11); M
Chien, M Chin, E Mehemedbasic (Year 10); D Chien, G Dzero, D Mah (Year 9); H Feng, E Lee, Y Man
(Year 8); and L Hoad, M Jun, I Lai, L Mah, K Nakamura (Year 7). CHS Representatives as a result
of successes at the Regional Carnival were: K Nakamura, L Hoad, L Mah, M Jun, H Feng, E Lee, D
Mah, G Dzero, D Chien, M Chien, J Jiang. These boys have qualified for state level competition in
the public system. Congratulations!
Solar Energy Metering
The energy produced from our solar panels amounts to more than
500 kwh/month. It can be viewed on the school network. Go to programs / school/ sites/ school
solar. Sites such as ours consume more than 160,000 kwh per annum. Despite the fact that the
output of the solar panels is only about 3.5% of our consumption, it is nevertheless significant
in a nation-wide context. Renewable energy saves CO2 emissions. In financial terms, the impact of
our power generation will be harder to quantify. SBHS is net metered. The way the system is set
up is that the school directly uses the electricity being produced and in turn this reduces the
school’s consumption and electricity bill. As electricity costs rise, it might be more
profitable to multiply our production by the unit cost on our next bill to give the school
community an idea of the returns on the investment in solar energy.
Big Night Out – A Big Success
It was a very pleasant evening last Saturday. A
well –organised team of servers, numbering over 30 on the night, kept queues short and most
people eating. The entertainment was regular and diverse. The families attending had a
multicultural experience. Charles Ovadia deserves our congratulations on putting together a large
and complex event. My family and I had an enjoyable time. Thank you to everyone concerned.
School General Service Contributions
Thank you to Year 8 parents for your great
financial support with general service contributions – 81% of budget has been received
already! Year 9 support has been very good too at 77% of budget, followed by Year 11 at 75%. I am
asking for a better response from Year 10 at 69% and Year 12 at a disappointing 50%. We need your
financial assistance now to provide services and resources this year. Dr

BOOK FAIR :-
THE FIRST EVER HIGH BOOK FAIR
The modus operandi of the Book Fair is to encourage boys to purchase a book that he is going to
read first and then donate this book to the Library Collection. In this way you are supporting
your son’s reading endeavours and at the same time assisting his school in a small but
vital way. Please encourage your son to be proud of his choice of book and to be proud to make
this donation which helps his fellow students. Local book shops which are assisting the
Librarians to run the Book Fair are Borders at Bondi Junction and Dymocks at Bondi Junction and
Children’s Bookshop at Belrose which specializes in books for gifted and talented boys and
MacKays Bookshop at Double Bay.
The librarians are now working on new book lists so that the most suitable and newest books will
be put on display for your sons to choose from. On the day of the Book Fair, Friday 28th May,
your son will come with his English class to the Andrews Library to choose his book and will
bring home a note telling you the title and cost of the book he chose. On the bottom of this
communication will be a return slip for you to pay for the book as you do with school excursions
- with credit card or cheques or cash at the Front Office. When payment is notified, Library
staff will cover and accession the books and contact your son to pick up his book to read.
In advance the 2 librarians would like to thank Mr John Walker for his support, Ms Trompetter and
the English staff for their unswerving support for reading, the office staff and library clerical
staff who will be doing a lot of work to support this endeavour, to maintain the incredible
reading productivity at High - over 11000 loans from the Andrews Library alone last year.

The Library has always advertised that it purchases special requests from students and it does
so. This Book Fair gives everyone a great opportunity to tell us what books to put in our display
for you to purchase and read. Why not pay a visit to a book shop online and email us the title of
a book you would love to have and read and we will put it on a list for the bookshops to supply
for the Book Fair?
NO MORE OVERDUE NOTICES –
THE PORTAL IS VITAL FOR LIBRARY COMMUNICATION
NOW
There are no more overdue notices. Students are expected to refer to the Portal or their book
pocket to see if resources are overdue. Overdue books are now dealt with by a letter to parents
asking for payment to replace the resource. Renewals are also done through the portal. You can
look up the library catalogue from home on your portal.
STATE LIBRARY DATABASES – Superior to Google - Last Friday I had the privilege of
attending a lecture arranged by Ms Gordon for Year 10s on the value of obtaining a State Library
Card to access the 50 full text online databases the State Library now subscribes to. Using these
databases to acquire information is much better than using Google as the articles on these
databases are written by people with academic credibility.
If you want to obtain a card you can find out the steps by looking at Moodle on your Portal or
just Google the state library. All this is free. Anyone can subscribe.
Local libraries also have access to many of these databases. Please encourage your son to use his
local library card to access them from home.

Twister-Code Red by Chris Ryan
Reviewed by Nevin Lazarus
Twister by Chris Ryan is an action packed thriller.
Twister was written by ex SAS hero who writes for both adults and children. Ryan is also
the author of the Alpha Force and the rest of the Code Red series. These series are
both about spies and are a compelling read.
The heroes, Ben and Angelo, have to land a plane during a twister and without much flight
experience. They have to battle off terrorists with guns. Finally they have to save thousands of
innocent civilians from an oil facility exploding in this storm causing vast damage to the city
The novel is mainly set in the Cayman Islands and the United States. The themes in this novel are
vengeance and greed.
I think that Twister is a great novel for young adults because it is action packed. I thoroughly
engaged with the heroes. I would rate this novel at 9/10 for its drama.

Federation Rep: MySchool League Tables
LEAGUE TABLES ARE DAMAGING FOR EDUCATION
Since the launch of the My School website in February, the worst fears about the production of
league tables have been confirmed. Reports of parents changing enrolment of their children,
schools being stigmatised as "underperforming" and schools "teaching to the test" have emerged.
Despite assurances by Julia Gillard that the government does not advocate the publishing of
"simplistic league tables", media organisations have used the data provided by the My School
website to name and shame schools and communities.
On 12 April the Australian Education Union executive will meet to discuss a response to the
threat of league tables. This may mean that the NSW Teachers Federation and other state education
unions will not support the NAPLAN tests in May.
The My School website is misleading and inaccurate. In particular the use of NAPLAN data to
measure school performance is very dangerous. NAPLAN was never designed to be used in this way.
It was meant to be used as a diagnostic test to identify areas of need and to help students. It
was never designed to measure teacher performance or judge schools. The NAPLAN results reflect
the influence of many factors that are outside the control of schools. Differences in student
background are critical. A school with mediocre teachers can achieve better NAPLAN results than a
school with high quality teachers simply because the student intakes are different. Test results
can also be manipulated by enrolling high achieving students or excluding other students.
Looking at the presentation of Sydney Boys High on the My School website shows how the website is
misleading. SBHS is performing well as "Green" compared to "statistically similar schools".
Unsurprising, since the selective schools test has a large component of literacy and numeracy.
But who are the "statistically similar schools"? SBHS is compared with Woomera Area School in
South Australia. This is a school that has 49 students mostly from families of military
personnel. The school has 7 teachers and 6 non-teaching staff, compared to SBHS's 75 teaching
staff and 13 non-teaching staff. No one is exactly sure how "statistically similar" is determined
so these comparisons are unfair.
The Director General of Education, Michael Coutts-Trotter, has been pressuring schools to ensure
that NAPLAN tests are not disrupted. He argues that league tables are here to stay and that
nothing can be done except lobby for minor improvements. Conversely, the Teachers Federation
believes that the publication of league tables can be pushed back.
The Teachers Federation is publishing a declaration of opposition to league tables that we are
asking individuals and organisations to support. There will also be a media campaign and campaign
materials provided for community meetings. Measures where teachers do not conduct the NAPLAN test
are also possible if the federal government fails to take action to stop the publication of
league tables.

1st Grade Report
This week High went up against cross-town rivals Grammar in the
last rubber of the season. There was a lot at stake this week, with a win giving High a potential
5th place and a loss a potential last place. The boys had had a good week at training and were
really looking forward to putting in a good performance. The day started off positively with High
taking the first set in the No 2 doubles in a dominant fashion, but the No 1 and No 3 doubles
were up against it, both losing their first sets. The No 1 doubles came back well to win the
second set with some excellent tennis and pushed the match to a super-tiebreaker. In what turned
out to be a tight affair, High put their STB experience from training and previous weeks into
play, and came up trumps, taking the breaker and the match 10-8 in the third. The No 2 doubles
lost the second set, losing their concentration and really had to focus to stay in the match.
Derek and I, this being our last doubles match for High, were extremely determined to win, and
with some solid tennis, took out the breaker and match 10-1 in the third. The No 3 doubles went
down in straight sets, but High led 2-1. Patrick played some great tennis to get to 6-3 5-3 up,
before the Grammar player retired due to a back injury. George played one of the best matches he
had played all season to comfortably take care of his opponent 6-2 6-2. The highlight of the day,
however, came from Derek playing his last match for High. Derek had a tight first set and after a
shocker of a call by the umpire at 3-2 and a break up, he went on to lose the set. The second saw
Derek come from a break behind, playing some rock solid tennis, to take the second and push the
match to a third set. At this stage, Grammar and High were tied at 4 matches all and everything
was on the line. The whole centre was tense and the Grammar player was starting to show signs of
cramp. The third set was a battle of wits, with both players going at each other's backhand. The
set swayed back and forth with breaks of serve on both sides. Points were celebrated like it was
a Davis Cup Tie. The match came to a climax at 4-5 15-40 on Derek's serve. Down two match points,
the Grammar player was in an extraordinary position, one point away from victory...but he
couldn't bend his knee. Forced to play on, because cramp doesn't constitute to an injury
time-out, he slashed hard at the next two balls and missed. Derek served out his game and the
score was 5-5. With the time approaching 5:30, the Grammar player took an injury time out,
consequently forfeiting his service game but unfortunately time had run out and the match was
called a tie. It was an extraordinary end to an extraordinary day. With the draw, High ended up
in 6th place, an agonising 5 points behind Shore in fifth but pleasingly was not last for the
first time in three years.

2nd Grade Report
In an incredibly bittersweet ending to the season, High defeated
Sydney Grammar 8.5-3.5 for the first time in a long time. However, as mentioned in the previous
report High needed to win by a margin of 6 points to overtake Grammar on the ladder. In the end,
High 2nds finished 6th on 31 points, 0.5 points behind Sydney Grammar on 31.5. This is a vast
improvement from the 19 points scored last year and the 3 the year before that and marks the
first time seconds haven’t come last in 5 years. The day started off well, with doubles one
and two recording straight sets wins, whilst the usually strong performing doubles three pair of
me and Thomas Nguyen was defeated by a stronger Grammar pairing of 4 and 5. High had a shaky
start with singles, with myself going down to an opponent who has performed admirably against
strong opponents in the season and the usual rock in the team, David Ghezelbash, downed in
straight sets by an eccentric Grammar opponent. However, Frank Zhang and Thomas Nguyen both
demolished their opponents in straight sets to set up a tense showdown. With High leading 4-3,
number 4 Edward Qiu played the best tennis of his career as he easily dispatched his Grammar
opponent 6-2 6-2. We had done it; we had won our rubber against Grammar. But that wasn’t
enough, we wanted the six points and we wanted to beat Grammar on the ladder and put them in
their rightful place at 6th. With Anton locked in a tense match, many spectators were supporting
this crucial match and I dutifully thank each and every one of them for their support. After
winning a tense second set tie breaker, Anton won 5 quick games in 10 minutes for a 5-0 lead in
the third set. However, the Grammar opponent, sensing defeat, casually albeit conspicuously
stalled the match in order to salvage a draw. With almost every spectator screaming at him, the
Grammar number three was forced into playing after taking several minutes to change ends. At
5:29pm, a minute before the match was scheduled to a close with the result being a draw, Anton
tried to serve out the match and thus earn High a respectable 5th place however, stumbling at
30-0 up, Anton lost the game and in turn Grammar initiated a draw. With the only logical
conclusion being a win, Anton rightfully felt he had been robbed and this echoes the attitudes of
all the High supporters, and even some Grammar, at the venue. However, Sydney High Second Grade
Tennis has enjoyed a very memorable season and the start of many more to come.

3rd Grade Report
Mohit Tugnait once said "And we should consider every day lost
on which we have not danced at least once. And we should call every truth false which was not
accompanied by at least one laugh."
Despite the high stakes of pride and glory of 3rd grade's last match ever, the importance of
enjoyment was not lost on our heroes. The day started off well, with victory in the first doubles
and number 3 singles. Ben and Boris used their doubles expertise to rapidly deconstruct their
opponents. The speed and accuracy of their shots made it seem like they were only playing one
person. Paul managed to complete his game with extreme swiftness. His opponent had a weak
presence on the court, and failed to return a sufficient number of Paul's shots. Justin faced an
opponent who was arguably tougher. Despite his superior physique and attempts to prolong the
match in sweltering heat, the tired legs of the veteran could not stand up to the test. Grammar's
consistent ground strokes provided a solid foundation which resulted in a 1-6 High loss. The
successful duo of Paul and Justin combined one last time in an attempt to consolidate High's
lead. Despite their specialised tactics, and adherence to the motto "flair is better than force",
the up and coming Grammar doubles team dismantled their tactics. High lost 3-6. Boris, using an
unfamiliar racquet, was again hitting a disproportionate amount of unforced errors. The amount of
times the phrase "what was that?" was heard closely mirrored the amount of points Boris could
have won. Despite a close start, the heat took its toll as Boris lost 2-6. Ben played a similar
opponent, but unfortunately faced the same pitfalls. As the conditions exacerbated the high
amounts of unforced errors, and the energy lost, Ben's ability to approach the net were hampered.
This unfortunately led to a 1-6 loss. Before the participants of the Wimbledon final walk out on
the courts, they observe a quote; "If you can meet with triumph and disaster and treat those two
imposters just the same". Although the 2-4 loss was not the fairy tale ending 3rd grade had hoped
for, it is important to remember, we played with conviction and a positive attitude throughout
the season, and we beat Shore. The ironic absence of Mr Boros on Saturday served as a metaphor,
foreshadowing our departure from the ranks of High tennis, but failed to convey the fact that our
times of tennis shall remain forever embedded within us. Tugnait also said, "There is always some
madness in love, but there is always some reason in madness" and in spite of some mixed results,
we must also take this opportunity to thank Mr Boros for his contributions to what has been a
smoothly organised, enjoyable, and memorable season.

2010 Season
Undoubtedly, the 2010 half of the season was impressive, starting off
with both 1st Grade and 2nd Grade winning the Raschke Cup, followed by a magnificent game by 1st
Grade against Newington, winning 63-59. 1st Grade remained undefeated throughout the rest of the
season, an amazing feat at 1st Grade level. As preparation for the final home game, Mr Hayman
organised for Old Boy John McGrath (John McGrath owns Australia’s largest real
estate business) to come in and speak with our 1sts and 2nds squad on the Friday before the last
home game against Scots. John spoke about the pursuit of excellence and how many people, when
they achieve some level of success begin to rest on their laurels. He urged our boys to remember
that Old Boys all over Australia are supporting their efforts and urged them to continue striving
for success. He said that the lessons he learnt in the gymnasium are still the ones which he uses
today in business. The Old Boys were also invited to attend the game and cheered them on. First
and Second Grade did not disappoint, winning 91-33 and 71-21, respectively. They capped off the
last game of the season against Grammar with 79-52 and 72-29 wins. 1st Grade finished the
competition in 2nd place and 2nd Grade finished in 3rd place. Congratulations to both teams!
Other teams also had a great 2010 season and must be congratulated for their efforts! Go High
Basketball!
Hayman Cup Final Results!

NSW Schoolboy Head of the River –
This was a great day of racing for our representatives, and we had the School 1st and 2nd VIII,
the Year 10 1st VIII, and a Double Scull crew, James Whiting and Alex Lazarou make finals.
CHS Championship Regatta –
This was a very successful regatta for SHS Rowing,
collecting 6 state gold, 7 silver and 7 bronze medals, and a few trophies to display in the
trophy cabinet at the sheds. Well done to all rowers, they represented High with ability and
pride. Results are listed.
Head of the River – Saturday 27th March 2010
Everyone is welcome
Excitement is building with the 2010 GPS Head of the River upon us.
I do hope you can make the journey to the Sydney International Regatta Centre at Penrith to
experience this impressive event. All other GPS schools have their whole school attend so we
certainly hope ̽»¨ÊÓƵ can be well represented.
Our marquee is decorated in the blue and brown, and our school stage band will be playing. Bring
a picnic morning tea or there are plenty of food and coffee outlets available.
Clean Up Working Bee - Sunday 28th March
It is very important for all boys and parents to come to the sheds between 9am and 12pm this
Sunday to help ‘deep’ clean.
- The boys need to clean the boatshed, the weights room, storage area, and the dormitory
- The parents clean the upstairs function room, the kitchen, the dining room, the storerooms
and the barbecue area
- A skip will be there for all rubbish removal
There will be area leaders and all cleaning products, buckets, cloths etc will be supplied. A leg
of ham, condiments, bread rolls, tea and coffee will be available for workers.
Many hands make light work, and it is enjoyable cleaning with others, so please come along with
your son to help

TEAM KITS, MATCH BALLS and SCOREBOOKS
All team kits can be delivered on the night of
the Dinner should it be more convenient for those that have assisted with the teams during the
season. Coaches can also use this opportunity to return their kits plus all match and practice
cricket balls, for the training pool and cricket nets for next season.
THANK YOU
At the risk of missing those who have assisted us this season, excuse me
for not using individual names but acknowledging the areas that you have supported us. On behalf
of the all boys in the cricket section I would like to pass on our appreciation for the support
of the parents with our 1st and 2nd XIs with lunches and afternoon teas and to the scorers with
each of the teams. To parents who assisted other teams with scoring and management duties a big
thank you from the boys. To my coaches who worked with teams, umpired every Saturday and covered
other teams for umpiring a very big thanks from ALL. To the Age Coordinators my thanks for your
efforts in team selections and attendances, your efforts have been rewarded with full teams of a
Saturday. Finally to the senior boys who regularly assisted with parking, pitch covers and offers
to assist at sport afternoons, my personal thanks.

What a Terrific Night
By all accounts from our community, BIG NIGHT OUT was a
terrific success. Our boys were brilliant in performances from the Jazz Ensemble, French Tour
Stage Band, Year 8 and 10 Rock Bands and Year 12 Rock Band, the Icebergs. Thank you for making
yourselves available for our enjoyment. The Lion Dance Drummers and Dancers were spectacular and
the Bhangra Dance Troupe, a real treat. Two old boys ran the Bar for us all night – what a
fantastic contribution – thank you.
But nothing really compared to the outstanding food prepared and served by parents. It was so
delicious and the crowds wanted more. In the end we served about 350 people. What an achievement.
Our warmest thanks to everyone who lent a hand in some way in preparations leading up to
Saturday, or on the night. Thank you for your generosity in giving your time, effort and indeed
the food! It was fantastic to see how many people where involved. Particular thanks must go to
the BNO committee who were an outstandingly organised, industrious and generous group, again so
ably led by Charles Ovadia.
Thank you to all the families and businesses in our community who so generously donated goods and
services – our Silent Auction and Raffles were terrific as a consequence.
The P&C and the BNO organising committee welcome your feedback and comments on the
evening. Please email your thoughts and suggestions for next year to
