From the Principal

The courtyard grass
Students, staff and community members are requested not to take short cuts across the grass of the courtyard outside the Great Hall. Every year the Groundsman revives the ground cover and quality of the grass only to have it worn away by constant traffic taking unnecessary shortcuts. There was a time at this school when walking on the grass incurred a severe corporal punishment penalty. These days we allow boys to be on the grassed area when we have examinations and some assemblies. At other times the area is strictly out of bounds and you should stay off it. The cloister with its grass, trees and bushes makes a pleasant vista and is an important High memorial. Currently, the grass is thick and healthy. I ask for your cooperation in maintaining the area as a showpiece of our school.

Commuter praise
A regular commuter praises our boys on their behaviour:

“I am writing to commend the students of Sydney Boys High on their exceptionally good behaviour when travelling on public transport to and from the school. I currently work at the Randwick campus of UNSW and I share the bus ride on either the 372, 374 or 376 with Sydney Girls and Boys High students. I have been meaning to write for a long time to express how impressed I am with the courteous and well mannered students at your school. The students always allow other passengers to board the bus first, they give up their seat when another passenger is standing and always thank the driver for the ride. With so many negative things that we hear about school students I think that we often miss out on hearing the positive things about students. I congratulate the students at your school and commend them for their great behaviour.”

Behaviour on trains
By contrast to the above the two Year 11 and one Year 10 students who travel on the 8 am all stations to Central were observed contravening the code of conduct for train travel. They had their feet on the seats, left their bags on their seats and failed to vacate seats for paying passengers. ‘Boys, as soon as your carriage fills up, stop being selfish and look around and when a passenger approaches, give up your seat’. It is always disappointing to receive negative emails when so often the feedback is positive. Stop letting yourself and your school down!

Driving in the grounds of the school
The OH&S Committee has received several complaints about cars (predominantly ‘P’ plated) driving too fast on school grounds. The speed limit is 10kph. We ask all drivers to respect the speed limit. Students with permits to park on school grounds may have them revoked if they continue to ignore the speed limit.

Parents are asked not to drive up Cutler Drive in the mornings to drop off their sons. Some years ago the schools created a third gate on Cleveland Street and widened the laybacks and driveways. The objective was to create a safe and efficient entry, drop-off zone and exit. Parents are requested to enter the school via gate 1, drop off their sons next to the tennis courts and then exit via gate 1 or gate 3. Boys should walk from the drop-off zone to the main building. On Anzac Parade, the Sir Roden Cutler Gates can be used as an entry point and boys can be dropped off next to Killip Wing. Thereafter, parents are asked to exit the school via gate 10.

Andrews Library

ONE BIG LIBRARY?
At present the two libraries are operating from the same system and regarding themselves as one big library. Quite a lot of fruitful co-operation is occurring between both library staffs in order to keep many aspects of self directed learning running smoothly. The latest issues have been about the shared use of the OASIS system, the incorporation of sample reading material into the MacDonald Wing Library and how to use both libraries to avoid overcrowding.

PRINTING – NEW STUDENTS
New students in particular are advised that all students need to put $10 onto their print account to be able to print at all in the libraries. Please complete this transaction at the front office and bring your explanation chit up to the computers to put this money into your account. Printing cost 15c a page for black and white and 70c a page for colour. Double sided printing is cheaper.

ANDREWS LIBRARY LIBRARY ORIENTATION
Apologies to everyone that Year 7 Library orientation has not happened yet. This takes place in Peer Support /Values Ed lessons and proves difficult for them to squeeze in but is desperately needed and will happen.

As we have just completed a fiction stock-take and come across lots of old books there are loads of quite interesting fiction for students to take for free.

These are just outside the library on the grey filing cabinet and in that area.

School Student Transport Scheme (SSTS)

School Student Code of Conduct –

Students travelling on buses must:-

• Dip school bus pass or pay the fare when joining the bus. This is particularly important as the data collected from the on bus fare collection system may be used for service planning purposes
• Use school specials when provided
• Vacate seats for adults when requested
• Follow the driver’s instructions about safety on the bus
• Respect the needs and comfort of other passengers
• Behave appropriately at all times (e.g. no offensive language, no throwing things)
• Protect bus property (e.g. no vandalism)

Students are reminded to:-

• Only use the school bus pass for its intended purpose i.e. for travel between home and school (does not include travel to and from sporting activities)
• Maintain possession of the school bus pass at all times.

During 2010, authorised officers will be deployed to inspect Code of Conduct compliance on school bus services in the Eastern Region. Students who are found to have breached their obligations may lose their travel entitlement and possibly incur an infringement.

Music Notes

Speech Night Performances
The Tour Stage Band performed at Speech Night last Tuesday evening James Morrison’s Sydney by Night with funky solos by Michael Phung (alto saxophone) and Tejas Iyer (bass). The band will be performing along with the rest of the concert band and string ensemble in France and Flanders this April culminating in the performance at Villers-Bretenoux for the Anzac Day Dawn Ceremony.

Also featured on Speech Night was Encore nominated composition by Andre Brokman titled ‘Mosquito’ performed by three professional percussionists and our music tutors; Rebecca Irwin (Violin) and Karl Murr (clarinet). Congratulations to all our musicians for their fine performances which were enjoyed by all who attended.

Tour Meeting
A meeting was held last Tuesday evening (9th of February 2010) for tour parents and students with votes made on tour backpacks and jumpers. Please collect information notes from the Music Staffroom if you were unable to attend. The FINAL TOUR meeting scheduled on Tuesday the 16th of March is COMPULSORY for ALL parents and students.

This is an example of the necessity for all debaters to keep up to date with current events by reading a variety of newspapers, listening to radio or researching in the internet. Big thanks to our Seniors for another quality debate!

Results – Joeys’ Regatta
It was again a very rainy Saturday morning for spectators at Rodd Park, but the Sydney High crews performed well. The Year 8 Quads were the standout High crews of the regatta. In particular -

•  Year 8 2nd Coxed Quad Scull – Anthony Tran, Kaiwai Liu, Ray Fang, Chris Wang, (c) Alfred Xing finished 3rd to Newington and Scots after leading at half way, giving the other school crews a surprise, and beating home King’s.

Unfortunately, we were only able to start one School Four, but with good results –

• School 1st Four – Pravin Radhakrishnan, Allen Liao, Chun Wong, Koren Fang, (c) Brian Jian were competitive fighting out with Newington for 3rd place.

The School First Eight, with some enforced changes to the crew due to sickness and injury, kept up closely behind the other schools.

• School 1st Eight – Tim Gollan, Jonah Petrie, Eric Ovadia, Vlad Boulavine, Michael Ambrose, Andrew Blomberg, James Whiting, Alex Lazarou, (c) Gareth Deacon had an improved performance.

At this stage of the GPS competition we are sitting in front of Grammar on the official junior point score ladder and in front of Newington on the senior point score. Well done to all crews.

Melbourne Exchange Tour Report
From the 8th to the 13th February, the Year 10 VIIIs were in Melbourne on a rowing exchange to race Melbourne High school. This annual tradition is always a highlight of the rowing season for the Year 10 crews and this trip was no exception. Having lost 3 of the 4 races while Melbourne were in Sydney last year, the High first crew were hungry for revenge.

The trip started off with the team building bus ride to the Gundagai Motel, where we played a series of mafia games. Leaving early the next morning, we arrived in Melbourne at 1 the next afternoon and immediately unloaded and assembled the boats, eager to get on the water after two days on a bus. After a solid first training session on the unbelievably flat but dirty water of the Yarra River, the High boys went home with their Melbourne billets.

The next morning brought the first races between the schools. After one race in which High won by 3 lengths, it became apparent that domination and carnage were on the cards for Melbourne, and this reflected in the 1sts final score of 5-0 over Melbourne’s 1sts. The 2nds, although just losing most of their races, managed to come back in the last 2km race for an impressive 3 length win over Melbourne’s 2nds crew.

On the Friday, the boys from both schools had time to explore the Melbourne city, highlighted by a trip to the top of the Eureka Tower, the highest ‘public vantage point’ in the southern hemisphere. The next morning the boys began the gruelling bus ride back to Sydney, which was somewhat improved by an impulse bought ukulele, which made the trip bearable. The exchange gave valuable racing experience to all members involved and was also great fun, with many friendships being formed over the 4 days.

Special thanks from all the Year 10 rowers go to Mr Barris, Neville Morgan, Tim Wilson and our coach David Vien; the astounding amount of time and effort put in by these men are what made the trip possible and as enjoyable as it was.

Upcoming Events

• Rowing Committee meeting – Tuesday 2nd March 7pm. We are encouraging all parents to attend our last meeting of the season. As you know, we lose some committee parents every year and now is the opportunity to come along to a meeting and listen to what’s involved. Please make the effort, as we need more parents involved next season.
• Rowing Dinner – Wednesday 10th March. This is the end of season dinner for all crews, coaches, staff and parents.
• Rowing Assembly – Friday 26th March. This is a very special school occasion for all the senior rowers and their parents leading into the HOR.
• Head of the River – Saturday 27th March. The entire rowing family of present and past rowers and supporters make the trek to this big event at SIRC with all the GPS Schools competing for the major trophies.

1st Grade Report
Sydney High first grade were looking to post a good performance against a strong SJC team in the second round of the competition. The day started off on a positive note with our No 2 doubles taking the first set out 6-3. However through a few errors High went down 10-8 in the third set super tiebreaker. The singles were extremely competitive and saw four out of the six singles go to three sets. High started off well with considerable leads in the first set, to all four players on court, but through a lack of concentration went down in tight three setters. The highlight of the day came through the little maestro Frank Zhang. Frank came from a set down against a formidable opponent and through dogged determination and great execution on court, went on to win the match 6-4 in the third set. Although slightly disappointed, High can definitely take the positives out of this performance and with better execution will look to achieve more positive results. First grade can take a lot out of this rubber and will look forward to the rest of the GPS season.

2nd Grade Report
Sydney High seconds were eager to post a good result in our first GPS season rubber that did not rain out. However, as we woke up to gloomy skies that opportunity was looking further and further away. When we arrived at the courts, we found them covered in mud, dirt and water. However, after an hour of sweeping and brushing the courts were finally playable. High started the day on a positive note, with the doubles 1 combination of David Ghezelbash and Lachlan Day winning their match in a hard fought 3 setter and both other doubles taking their opponents to three sets, eventually going down by a margin of two points respectively. With High down 2-1 in the rubber, Lachlan Day and Thomas Nguyen both pulled off excellent straight sets wins to put High in the lead at 3-2. However, with the injury of Anton Brokman and David Ghezelbash going down in a hard fought match, High had to rely on singles 4 and 6 to both record wins to take out the rubber. The matches both commenced at 4:30pm, relatively late for a GPS match due to the rain delay. The rush showed in both matches as both High players hit unnecessary unforced errors, eventually bringing the day to a disappointing end. High walked away from the meet with a rubber for the taking, however many valuable lessons were learned and High showed great spirit on the day and eagerly look forward to the rest of the GPS season.

Another false start due to weather and most frustrating for all including parents who provide transport for their sons and other lads by car pooling. Our 2nd XI, 5th XI, 6th XI, 15C and 14c however did not get a start in their second attempt to play some cricket after missing out last weekend.

Brian Kelly (54), Nakul Bhagwat (16), Avindu Vithanage (14) and Andy Liu (14). Wicket takers Avindu Vithanage 2/33 and Sudam Dias 1/31. High 2nd innings 1/26 Nakul Bhagwat (11n.o) and Andy Liu (11n.o). We were 3/105!!! and had them 4/81 !!!?

3rd XI (Day 1) HIGH 0/7 (10) - v - ST JOSEPH’S 7decl./257 (52)
Wicket takers were Ishman Bari 2/29 (9),Iftiar Khan 2/38 (8) Veeral Patel 1/37 (8) and Rahib Azwad 1/15 (2). High had 10 overs to end the day with Ryan McDonald and Henry Sit at the crease. Played on a small ground with one very short boundary Joey’s score is gettable with sensible batting. See Website report.

High was asked to the bat in the worst of the conditions and struggled. Joey’s then batted on a wicket that had dried considerably and declared. Batting a second time the general lack of application of High’s top order was exposed. Are 16A places up for review and changes for Rd.6???

Four players, Thilan Subasinghe (21), Kevin Pham (8), Krushaal Vyas (7) and Kritman Dhamoon (6) provided 80% of the runs of the final score. One wkt each by Safin Sufian and Thilan Subasinghe. A good chance for 15B players to challenge for a place in the 15As for the GPS Round 6. See Website report

On a very small ground High had Joey’s at 4/70 and then an avalanche occurred. In reply High have had a disastrous start and are on the ropes at 6/6 and a long Day2 ahead of them..Main run scorer Sagar Nagaraj (4). The team in its first official match was missing 2 late advice non-attenders but those who did play were a credit to the School and their Year 7 cricketers. Niyazul BARI (10), Rick Saha (5) and Vishnu Avudainayagam (2) and 1/30 (5). Also taking a wkt was Anthony Taing 1/12 (2) and bowled well with figure of 0/16 (5) Jonathon Chew Wicket taker

13B ST JOSEPH’S 2/88 (20) - defeated - HIGH 10/34 (17)
Another great effort in their first match for High. Playing a 20/20 fixture we sent Joey’s in which doesn’t seem like a good idea on a wet day. However, Tahmid Hossain (13) and 1/11(4) had a good day with the ball then bat and was supported by Anthony Allingham 0/11. Well done to all concerned.

13C ST JOSEPH’S COLLEGE 3/54 - defeated - HIGH 10/53
Two short and a great first up effort by this team. Run scorers were James Tinker (15), Sudarshan Arvind (3) and 1/7 (2), and Ian Tong Zhou (1) additional wkts taken by Hardy Huang 1/11 (2) and Yilun Zhou 1/15 (2). Thanks to the Joey’s boys for sportsmanship and substitutions for us.

The 2010 SBHS Cricket Dinner

SBHS Cricket will celebrate the efforts and achievements of our boys as well as acknowledge staff, coaches and supporters at the SBHS Cricket dinner on Wednesday 31 March 2010.

Players are asked to take responsibility on a team-by-team basis for any end-of-season gifts to their team’s coach.

The dinner will be held on
Wednesday 31st March
in the Great Hall
6pm for 6.30 pm

The cost of the dinner will be $25 per adult and $20 per student.

LAST DAY FOR PAYMENT AT THE MAIN OFFICE IS FRIDAY 19th MARCH. Tickets are limited.

Boys are to wear school uniform at the dinner. Soft drinks provided. Parents may BYO wine/beer, if they wish.

New Parents Welcome
Party All parents new to the school, from Year 7 through to Year 12, are invited to attend the New Parents Welcome Party to be held in the Great Hall, Thursday 25th February from 6.30 to 8.30pm. This evening is always hugely popular with parents as it provides a terrific opportunity to meet each other and learn more about how Sydney Boys High works. Parent representatives from all years will be in attendance as well as members of the P&C and other school community groups.

Sydney Boys High BIG NIGHT OUT
Tickets are now available for sale for BIG NIGHT OUT through the General Office. $15.00 per person for entree, main course and dessert AND a night filled with entertainment. Why not bring the whole family.

A tremendous thank you to all those in the community who have already generously volunteered to prepare and provide main course fare for BIG NIGHT OUT. We are now seeking your assistance in the following ways:

1.  We are seeking people to donate their excellent cooking skills for the entrée and dessert stalls. Again moderately large quantities for 25 - 50 people of entrée or dessert of any cuisine is most welcome - whatever is your speciality!!!!    • approaching your local eatery for donation of a dining voucher
   • donations from your wine cellar
   • approaching your hairdresser for a voucher
   • clothing or jewellery store vouchers
   • concert tickets
   • food and wine hamper
   • weekends away in holiday homes
   • cooking classes
   • electrical goods
   • surfing, tennis or maths lessons
   • gym memberships or classes
   • If you have services that could help people say an opinion on architect's drawing's, a building inspection, some driving lessons, the drawing up of a simple will. etc
   • An entertainer or artist could donate a copy of their book or DVD or some tickets to a show.
   • work experience placements are invaluable – even for just a day

Selection Tournament on Monday 1 March

If you wish to be considered for one of the Chess teams that will represent Sydney High in the Friday interschool competition you must compete in the selection tournament.

Where & When: Great Hall Monday 1 March 8.30am – 3pm

Please note an early start. You need to be in the hall before 8.30am.
