High Talent
Congratulations to Howe Chen, Year 10, whose ‘Eternity star’ Syndicate won the NSW ASX Schools Sharemarket game. He not only won a handsome cash prize for himself, but also $2000 for the school – well done indeed! Brendan Hancock (Year 11) was selected in the combined GPS Open Waterpolo team and Jeremy Dobrowolski (Year 11) in the combined GPS U17 team. Great work, boys! The Language Olympics two weeks of online competition was entered by High for the first time. Students were tested on reading, listening and writing skills on vocabulary and verbs from ten languages. Our school answered 199.189 questions and finished with a ranking of 30 out of 400 schools in Australia and New Zealand. Well done to all concerned.

Year 11 Reports
All Year 11 students should have their reports. Year 10 subject accelerants also have their reports. If your son in Year 11 has not shown you his report – ask for it. Our reports have much useful information in them, not to mention teachers’ feedback about the learning outcomes and motivation of your sons. Reports lose their usefulness and currency if their contents are not discussed within a week of the scheduled period of issue. Remind your son that he is responsible for his learning and is accountable for it.

Year 7 Adviser 2011
I am pleased to announce the appointment of George Barris as Year 7 Adviser for 2011. George has come to us from St Catherine’s where he had a student welfare role in Tutor Group. He will be supported for 2011 by Steve Codey as Assistant Year Adviser.

School General Service Contributions
The school is extremely short of cash at this time of year with orders for all remaining goods and services for term 4 already in the pipeline and commitments for sporting activities made. It is at this time each year that we ask all parents with invoices still outstanding to follow the example of the overwhelming majority and pay their school fees. Our basic fees are still at less than 5% of comparable schools in the GPS. Ironically, the three years where most of the school’s resources are expended, Years 10-12, have the lowest percentages of fees paid. Get behind public education so we can continue to offer outstanding levels of service to your sons!

Year 9 Parents
On Tuesday next week the School Certificate Tests are being held for History, Geography and Civics. Your sons are involved in these tests as all Year 9 are taking them. This is the culmination of a lot of hard work by teachers in History and Social Science. I trust you will urge your sons to study for these important tests.

Junior quad
The state of the playground in the junior quad has become dangerous, with potholes everywhere. Despite not having budgeted for this expense of c$10,000, I have had 270m2 of the area resurfaced with hot mix. The playground will be much better for handball and parking as a result of this rectification work.

The Fred Pham 500
On Friday we held a special mufti day and barbecue in support of fundraising for cancer research. The day was organised to assist the cause in honour of Fred’s long battle against the illness. The objective is to find 500 donors of $50 each in each of three states. Sadly, Fred passed away last weekend. His love, strength and courage remain as inspiration and guidance for his sons, Francis (Year 11) and Terence (Year 9). Our thoughts are with Hong and her extended family in this time of mourning.

REMINDER ABOUT LOCAL LIBRARIES AND ASSIGNMENTS/DATABASES/FREE TUTORING
– put your Library card in your wallet so you can go online at school if you wish.

An in-service yesterday and great presentation by the Randwick Head Librarian once again reminded me to tell parents and students that membership of local libraries brings lots of benefits. Firstly you have to have a Library card to get on-line access to the many really wonderful full text databases children can use for assignments and classwork. (These are superior tools to the Internet for students.)

Any boy can actually be a member of the Randwick Libraries (if these are better than your local Library) but he does need to present 2 bills and one other form of ID to obtain a card. I believe for children being schooled in this area they will waive where you live.

Of particular note is YOUR TUTOR. Randwick and other suburban libraries pay $9000 per annum to offer free tutoring in all subjects (after 4pm and before 9pm) to card only Library members. You are matched with a 2 year experienced tutor who specialises in your subject and your Year level. This is a K-12 arrangement. Your discussions and your tutoring are online and one on one. You will not be guaranteed the same tutor every time you go on-line.

IN-SERVICING FOR 2 LIBRARIANS THIS TERM
Both Librarians have been very fortunate to attend some very valuable in-servicing in the last several weeks and have come back with good ideas to both introduce Library networks and teaching software to our school. These are a fantastic opportunity for the librarians to find out what is happening in other schools and to take on board what is appropriate to our school. Yammer has certainly taken off. Our Library meeting groups are all Yammering away merrily. Blog-Ed is also coming in for some favourable mentions as a teaching tool. Wordle is another very useful visual tool for student note-making, brain storming, revision and can be used to check what students have understood on whole chapters and their own research. Animoto and Jamendo are looking easier to master for Book Trailers.

What’s Up in the McDonald Senior Library?

As you entered the Senior library this week you may have noticed the new display from Avant Cards of interesting and arty postcards. Useful as well as decorative, card designs range from The Periodic Table to artworks submitted by various artists and other great designs from various organisations with useful information regarding the curriculum, the HSC and courses available after school is completed. These cards are free and also make fantastic book marks so help yourself next time you visit us.

Fiction
Wizard’s First Rule by Terry Goodkind – For all those fantasy lovers and first in the bestselling fantasy series The Sword of Truth originally published in 1994 and now with new cover reissued for new audiences.

The Carbon Diaries 2015 and The Carbon Diaries 2017 by Saci Lloyd – set in a dystopian future with carbon dioxide rationing the reader views the events of the story through the prism of the disaffected and comic musings of the young narrator.

Exit Wound by Andy McNab – the newest Nick Stone thriller.

Anathem by Neal Stephenson – shortlisted for the Arthur C Clarke Award for science fiction and Locus Award for the best science fiction novel. Stephenson’s novels explore such themes as the history of science, mathematics and philosophy and this is the follow-up to his historical Baroque Cycle trilogy, which fictionalized the early-18th century scientific revolution. Fascinating!

I Blame Duchamp: My Life’s Adventures in Art by Edmund Capon – Edmund Capon describes his lifelong fascination with art and the artists who have inspired and enlightened us from all over the world and in a multitude of cultures and societies.

Mozart, Paris & Love

This was the theme of the last concert of the ABO’s subscription series. And what a fitting end to a year of celebration it was. There was a lot of Mozart (and one Joseph Schuster) with Paris in the background (if you want to read what Mozart thought of Paris and the French, you may borrow my program – he was not very complimentary!) and there was Love – as well as some other strong emotions – in the arias. The German tenor Markus Brutscher sang for the first time in Australia and he and the orchestra complemented each other beautifully – as though they had been making music together for years!

The nine items on the program would exceed my space limit – it all began with the Overture from “La clemenca di Tito” which made everybody sit up and take notice and ended with a Melologue (check the dictionary!) where the soloist stormed onto the stage as the orchestra was already playing (!) and Aria “Der stolze Löw’ lässt sich zwar zähmen”– a dramatic finale full of emotion. Needless to say we got an encore – Marcus Brutscher was very obliging and if the conductor had not finally marched the musicians off the stage we might still be applauding.

As I am likely to suffer withdrawal symptoms in the months before the new season starts I am going to attend their “Noël! Noël!” Christmas concerts in a variety of churches around the place as well as the Recital Hall. (For more information check the website: ). A final thank-you to the generosity of the ABO and the organisers of the Big Night Out – it has been a most enjoyable season of enchanting music.

Essential Secondary Science Assessment

Letter to parents about the ESSA written test

Dear Parent or Carer,

The Essential Secondary Science Assessment (ESSA) test for Year 8 students will be held on Tuesday 23 November 2010. The test takes approximately 80 minutes. It contains multiple choice, short response and extended response tasks.

The ESSA test is a diagnostic test that will provide information about what students know and can do in science. Tasks in the test are framed on Stage 4 outcomes and essential content in the NSW Science Years 7-10 Syllabus. Students can bring home the test stimulus magazine to discuss with you after the test.

Students will be tested on their:

• Knowledge and understanding of science
• Understanding and skills in the process of scientific investigation
• Ability to evaluate evidence, make judgements and think critically
• Ability to access information and communicate scientific ideas.

Students also complete a survey about their opinions, attitudes and values.

For the test, students are asked to provide their name, gender and age. They are requested to provide information as to whether they are from a language background other than English and whether or not they are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander. The information is treated confidentially and held securely to ensure that the right to privacy of all students is maintained.

If your child has a disability that needs special consideration or has been educated in English for less than one year, please contact your child’s school to discuss special provisions or possible exemption from the test.

Results of the test will be available during Term 1 2011. A personal report prepared for each student will describe the science knowledge and skills demonstrated by the student in the test. There will also be information about how the student’s results compare with overall performance of all students in the test. You will be invited to complete a parent survey about the test and science learning.

A Midsummer Night's Dream

Music Notes

RE-SCHEDULE of Upcoming Music Events

The Annual Music Assembly will be held on Tuesday 23rd of November 2010 in the Great Hall at 11:30am. We would like to invite parents to come along and celebrate the wonderful achievements of our music students. There will be performances by some of this year’s Encore Nominees, Music Pockets presented to Year 11 musicians eligible for the award and Music Tour highlights.

Our Spring Music Festival has been moved to Tuesday the 23rd November (evening of the Music Assembly) starting at 6:30pm in the Great Hall (ALL Concert Bands, Symphony Orchestra, Philharmonic Orchestra, String Ensembles and Chamber Choir will be involved).

The Symphony Orchestra will be performing the much anticipated Rhapsody in Blue by Gershwin with piano solo played by Paul Pang (OB 2006).

Tickets cost $10.00 (SINGLE) / $25.00 (FAMILY) and are available at the Front Office Please make payments at the office and collect your tickets there.

The Jazz in the Courtyard Concert will be on the following evening Wednesday 24th November starting at 5:30pm with the workshop during the day at school. (ALL Stage Bands, Jazz Ensemble and Guitar Ensemble will perform.)

The Jazz Ensemble will be performing on Sunday afternoon (2pm-5pm) 14th November 2010 at Le Pain Quotidien as part of the young talent development program ‘Soiree to Showcase our Future’. We would like to invite you to come along to hear them play some of their wonderful repertoire and support them in their hard work this year.

Music Tour Reunion Night

We apologise for the rescheduling of the Music Tour Reunion Night due to technical difficulties. The evening has been rescheduled to Monday the 13th of December 2010 at 6:30pm and all tour members and families are invited to attend this evening in the Great Hall. Mr Tony Hannon has spent many, many hours editing the footage so beautifully filmed by Bart Daniels (Yr 10) and Thomas Diep (Yr 11) and will be available on 2x DVDs for all tour members. If you would like to receive your copies on high definition blu-ray discs, please bring in blank discs to Mr Hannon to copy the tour concerts and highlights.

Opens v St Aloysius College Won 7 - 6
Sydney High ground out a well-deserved victory against St Aloysius College last weekend to once again bring our name to the forefront of the GPS/CAS competition. The day was off to an impressive start as news came of selection into the GPS 17s and Opens teams for Jeremy Dobrowolski and Brendan Hancock respectively.

This result produced an inspired start as all team members proved a solid match for the aggressive Aloysius offence. A number of players quickly racked up fouls as our defence was pushed, yet held out the goals. Up 5-3 at half-time, the fouling out of captain Brendan Hancock meant two tough quarters ahead.

Valiant team cohesion and inspired leadership from Jeremy and Oliver maintained the intensity into the third quarter despite the loss of Brendan. Pushing out to our biggest lead in the match, this effort proved vital as the 4th quarter saw goals dry out with fatigue, and High facing a tenacious Aloysius comeback. Our lead proved one too many as the clock ran out with the score reading 7-6. Goal scorers this week were Brendan (2), Oliver (2), Jeremy (1), Max Kobras (1), Samuel (1). Keeper Ashwin had yet another blinder to consolidate the team's high level defensive game. Our victory is the school's first in Opens competition for many years.

Another strong performance from a team which is only in their third game ever. It is very encouraging to see the boys improving with confidence and ability each week.

Coach, James Menzies, was impressed with some ‘freakish’ patches of play and could not be prouder of his team. Keep up the great work boys.

14Bs v Scots College Lost 10 – 1
With scores 2-1 at half time, it was an obvious lack of fitness that saw this game blow out in the second half. We need to keep working on our basics: defence and passing and we will get better.

Success Stories

Emmett Naar had 7 points, 6 assists and 5 rebounds in his debut game for Australia against Fiji this week.

Old Boy Spencer Llewellyn’s team Pacific College defeated Sonoma State on the weekend. His photo is now displayed in the main foyer too.

With First Grade winning 80-55 against Shore, High rose to the top of the table with Newington dropping into 3rd place after losing 60-44 to Scots, who are now in 2nd place. The competition looks to be very exciting with both our games against Scots (November 13th) and Newington (November 20th) coming up! Second Grade remains in 4th place and still has a good chance of catching up! Even if you don’t play basketball, please come and cheer the boys on and show your school spirit!

Movember

Also keep an eye out for some of our First and Second Grade players as well as Mr B Hayman who will be growing a moustache for Movember! They will be raising awareness for men’s health and depression.

Sydney Boys High Cricket

1st XI -St Joseph’s 8 dec 280 and 5-195 (Saif Haque 3-31, Tom Connolly 1-12), Lahiru Katupitiya (1-20) defeated SBHS 10-190 (88 overs) (Oliver Meroni 48, Tom Connolly 32, Sam Lane 29, Siva Sooriakumar 19, Sudam Dias 14 no)

Sydney Boys High can be pleased with their effort – despite the loss to last year’s premiers. Chasing down 280 was never going to be an easy task – especially after we were confronted by an under prepared wicket that still had moisture in it at the start of play. Oliver Meroni, displayed a batting maturity well advanced for his age in batting for 54 overs to score a technically pure 48 runs. Sam Lane also showed commendable discipline in sharing a 53 run partnership with Oliver. Lahiru Katupitiya looked solid when supporting Oliver after we lost two quick wickets and was unlucky to be run out just as he looked set for a long stay at the wicket. Tom Connolly completed a fine double on debut by scoring 32 runs and Sudam Dias and Siva Sooriakumar shared an exciting last wicket partnership of 27 which ensured we avoided the follow on. Coach Davo was proud of his players who stood up to the talented Joey’s combinations under difficult circumstances and their fighting spirit and positive attitude augurs well for a more successful season in 2010/11.

Team of the week: 4th XI Sydney High 4/219 (25) def. Shore 6/152 (25)
On a windy day at Queens Park, High won the toss and elected to bat. Henry Sit and Shimon Danizger starting a solid partnership for the 4th XI, Shimon reach 29 and Henry retiring on 53 leaving Oliver Pierce to pick up where he left off with Saqib. Oliver passed 50 soon after and it was up to the middle order to finish the innings. Great hitting in the final overs by Saqib, Ryan Gu and Denis Kim saw the total pass 200 for the first time this season. We went into the field knowing that we’d set a big total but we weren’t about to start celebrating yet. Our opening bowlers made sure that Shore would have to work for their runs. Desperate running saw Shimon effect a fast run out but we struggled to take wickets after that. With the Required run rate soaring, we certainly let them know about it which brought about more chances. With a win almost certain, we lost our intensity and almost let them back in the match. Ryan, Oliver, Derek and Ishmam were the pick of the bowlers, and were unlucky not to pick up more wickets. Though it was a very satisfying win in our first GPS game, there is still lots of improvement to be made especially in the field which we can hopefully address at training this week.

16 Bs XI
Shore capitalised on our inconsistent bowling, and amassed 229 from their 32 overs. High required 7.16 runs per over to win. At 2/14 after 7 overs, an important partnership between V Bhakri (18) and A Joseph (19) saw High steady to 2/60, before quick wickets saw us slump to 5/68. Requiring 160 more, at 9 an over, Chris Mao bludgeoned his way to 55 retired, which included an incredible 7 sixes, 3 fours, and one single. At 6/155, a win seemed within reach, but a rate of 8 an over was too much for the lower order. At 9/164, Chris Mao returned to the crease, and struck six off his first delivery, before 'running out' of partners. Though we didn't come away with a win, the boys can be very proud of their efforts.

On the second day, we were determined to get as many runs as possible and to stay in for as long as we could.

Lasith looked good in the first over of the day but unfortunately lost his wicket in the next, and Andrew soon followed because of a good in-close catch.

The wickets started to fall fast, and their bowling was of a high standard, with many fielders very short to build up the pressure. Yiu Tao managed to show some resistance with Ned and stayed in for 6 overs before there was a mix up in calling that resulted in a run out. Allen was next in, and he too showed some resistance against some very tight bowling and fielding. After he fell, George showed great patience and he stayed in for another 8 overs.

With 119 on the board, and about 40 overs to go, our goal in the second innings was to bat out the day. Philip and Jason opened the batting well again before Jason was unlucky and chopped the ball back onto his stumps. Philip and Ned started to build another partnership, which lasted for 11 overs, but after Philip was caught, we started to choke. We then lost 6/18, but we were still in with a chance. Allen batted well again, but some very good spin bowling got the better of him. With an outright defeat looking imminent, our hopes started to subside, but George and Ned built up a very nice little partnership. In the last over before the final drinks, George was very well caught at slip, but made a great effort, scoring 16, and staying in with Ned for 11 overs and a partnership of 36.

15 Bs XI-
36 (Howard Gu 5, Michael Yu 3 n.o, Eric Yu 3) lost to Shore 7/61 (Sid Subramanian 3/16, Alan Qi 2/10, Howard Gu 2/16)

High won the toss and elected to bat first against a very switched on Shore bowling line-up. Some very accurate swing bowling paid early dividends with High slumping to 7/20, with Howard top scoring with 5. The tail batted valiantly to lift the final score to 36, with Michael remaining unbeaten on 3. The bowlers began their innings with a mindset of attacking the stumps, with great effect, as newcomer Sid picked up two wickets in his first over before Shore could manage a run. Alan came on and continued the impressive bowling performance, also picking up two wickets in his first over. Shore passed the total losing 5 wickets in the team's best bowling performance of the season. Both teams agreed to play on for a few more overs, with Shore finishing at 7/61 when the game was finally called off.

14As XI
Once again everyone turned up to the game for the second chapter against Joeys. We were to continue batting with 54 on the board and 7 wickets down. Rick Saha started the day on 8 and Jonathan Chew started on 7. Once again their partnership had held us together at the start but unfortunately, Rick Saha left the crease with 9. Jonathan Chew continued to play well and ended up on 23 not out, as our team finished on all out for 78. Joeys, needing 78 went out to bat aggressively. An early wicket from Raunak Sura made us put the pressure on but in the end, they finished up at 205 or so with Vishnu Avudainayagam bowling 3 overs 2-10 and Varunan Murugananthan bowling 4 overs 2-24. Throughout our second innings we lost wickets again, but then we were very pleased with our fightback as Jonathan Chew scored 11, Sudarshan Arvind scoring 10 not out and Tahmeed Hossain holding up our ninth wicket.

14Bs XI
High - 10 / 78 (29 overs) Kevin ROBINSON 22, Anthony HUYNH 21, Jason LIM 5, Raycole DAI 5

Bowling to Shore earlier saw them at 8 / 43 (13 overs), however they reached 129. Still a good effort, and with 9 of the 10 wickets resulting from batsmen being bowled, it's good to see High attack the stumps. 29 sundries is something to be improved upon but with High's batting result at drinks an improvement for the second week in a row it's good to see players continue to develop.
