High Talent
High basketball raised its profile considerably with the first grade team playing a curtain raiser for the Sydney Kings last Saturday Night. High won the Ken Cole Trophy for the Premier Division of the Shootout. Congratulations to all the boys and their coaches. Well done indeed to our three Sydney East Blue recipients – Merlin Li (volleyball), Lloyd Perris (Australian Football) and Frank Torok (cross country).

Electricity Sub-Station
Despite long delays already, the connection of the underground cable from our site with its switches and substation to the main supply across Cleveland St., is still not yet complete. The plan to use an underbore method to cross the street did not succeed due to unforeseen subterranean obstructions. The revised plan is to block off the road and cut a trench to accommodate the high capacity cable to our site. The catch is that the high density cable they need is out of stock until December. It looks as though our improved power supply will not be forthcoming until 2011! Your patience is appreciated.

The Phillip Day Memorial Scholarship
High has only one scholarship and you have to qualify for entry before you are eligible to apply. All boys currently enrolled or enrolling in 2011 are eligible. The scholarship is valued at $1200. Details about suitability for the award of the scholarship can be found at . An application form can be downloaded from the icon next to Phil Day’s picture. The criteria could apply to a number of different kinds of applicants. “The Scholarship Committee may give preference to a highly talented student in a particular area of academic and/or co-curricular endeavour and/or to a particularly good all round achiever and/or to a student with special needs, financial or otherwise”. Capital held in the Sydney Boys High School Scholarship Fund is currently sufficient to enable the school to offer one scholarship each year. Previous PJ Day Scholarship winners were: 2009 – Alexander Belokopytov (Year 12) and 2010 - Terence Pham (Year 9). Heavily involved all-rounders, boys pursuing excellence in a single field of endeavour or someone with a special need, are encouraged to apply. Supporting documentation can be attached to the simple application form. Act now! You will never know if you don’t have a go!

State of the Learning Environment
The SBHS School Council has expressed its concern at the untidiness of the school grounds. Despite the best efforts of Mr Barris to provide more secure bins in convenient locations, boys are still not in the habits of always finding a bin for their rubbish. Visitors to our school notice these things particularly. It is time for stronger action by the school to make sure our grounds can be pleasant to rest or play in. I am looking to School Prefect Interns to take it upon themselves to model responsible playground and corridor behaviour. Do as Mr Barris and I do as we are walking around – stop and pick up a food wrapper or discarded container and put it where it should have gone in the first instance – in a bin! Show others that you personally care about what the school looks like. Encourage others to adopt the same attitude. Staff members are encouraged to ask boys to clean up the playground area they have been occupying during their breaks. Things need to improve. Students may be asked to do detentions cleaning up the grounds.

Cost of Utilities
The school is paying > $125,000 annually for utilities. Energy and water charges are tipped to rise steeply in the next few years. The school has purchased a sophisticated meter and software that records variations in water use. We can now see how much water is being used and when. Leaking cisterns, taps and appliances can waste more than 15,000 litres per day.

For some time we had a wastage rate of 30,000 litres a day. It is up to all of us to preserve water. Our society and our planet require our responsible actions. Boys pushing wads of toilet paper into cisterns cause a lot of waste. Jamming flush buttons has the same effect. I would like to spend public money on computers or coaches, not on wasted water or plumbers to repair vandalised toilets. If you see a running tap, turn it off. Please report to the Office or Mr Barris or me if you notice any appliance that could be leaking.

From the Two Libraries

Moving more Senior resources over to McDonald Library

Now that the McDonald Library has some new shelves the opportunity has been taken by the two librarians to move newer senior resources from 2 specific subject areas over to where the Senior boys are. So some new Art books are making their way on to the Senior shelves and the Environmental Science Collection as ES is a Senior Course is also going over. Maths books are already there.

CONFUSION - SO MAKE USE OF CATALOGUES TO INDICATE WHICH LIBRARY HAS YOUR RESOURCE.

THE LIBRARY CATALOGUE IS AVAILABLE FROM HOME ON STUDENT PORTALS.
Until quite a lot of space for Senior Resources become available for Senior Boys there are still lots of Senior Resources over in the Andrews Library. Students looking for resources are strongly advised to use the OASIS catalogue to find resources as they could be in either Library. Senior resources located in the McDonald Library currently have SEN as the location. Junior resources are not using any location as resources there are still suitable for Senior boys to use.

SENIORS AND JUNIORS WECOME TO BORROW FROM BOTH LIBRARIES – 2 LIBRARIES CONCEPT
As this school is selective we can always expect that Junior boys are going to want to have access to advanced resources so both libraries expect to see both Junior and Senior boys borrowing from and in and about both Libraries.

Opportunity for Free Books

The Andrews Library is currently culling fiction and anything over 15 years old is likely to be put out. Lots of scruffy but still readable favourites are making their way out the door for students to take.

What’s up in the McDonald Senior Library?

Welcome back to Term 4 in the Senior Library. Year 12 students are now busy with their HSC exams and approach the final days of their school lives. They will be missed although I’m sure for most of them they will be anticipating an exciting and rewarding future in whatever sphere they choose to enter. Year 11s are already beginning their Year 12 and HSC subject studies. Wisely, many of them are already beginning to get into positive work and study mode.

We continue to add new resources to the McDonald Library collection with the latest fiction and non- fiction titles being added. These titles will be available in the new book stand this week.

Books added from the Andrews library
This week we have also added some great new art books and other non- fiction transferred from the Andrews Library. We are lucky to be receiving some of the best of the Andrews collection suitable for senior students as well as adding many brand new titles such as those listed above. So don’t forget to browse the shelves to check out new resources. Many titles suggested by students have been added also and students are free to continue to make suggestions of good new fiction and non- fiction to add to our fledgling collection.

Letters Re Absence/Lateness/ Early Leave
When your son returns to school from being absent he is required to provide a letter of explanation signed by a parent or guardian. If your son is going to be late for school a note is also required. Alternatively you may contact the school by phone on 9361 6910 and dial “4” for the absentee line.

If your son has an early leave note he is required to have his note signed by either Mr Barris, Mr Dowdell or Mr Prorellis before 8:55 am and handed in to the Main Office immediately after. Each letter should be signed by a parent or guardian with the name, date and roll class of your son printed clearly. Your son needs to pick up a leave pass from the Main Office before he leaves the school.

Leave
If you require leave for your son please, apply in writing and address your application to the Principal, Dr Jaggar, stating the reason and length of time of the leave. Your son must then present this application to Dr Jaggar for permission for the leave. Please remember to apply before the leave and not after.

The Principal must approve all leave applications.

It was great to see you in canteen for the first time last Friday – thanks very much for getting yourselves organized. We appreciate your assistance and look forward to working with you over the coming year.

Music Notes

HSC Encore Nominations

Well done to all our HSC Music students who performed outstandingly on our showcase evening at the end of last term before their HSC Performance exam. The boys achieved a stunning record of eleven Encore nominations this year; an amazing effort. Congratulations to Richard Bi, Guangzhi Niu, Allen Parameswaran, Ding Yan (Music Extension) and Jesse Chen, Vivian Le, Lee Ming, Michael Phung, Marcell Rozsa, Michael Wong and Charles Wu (Music 2).

A special congratulation to all the HSC boys who played exceptionally well in their performance exam.

Upcoming Music Events

The Annual Music Assembly will be held on Tuesday 23rd of November 2010 in the Great Hall at 11:30am. We would like to invite parents to come along and celebrate the wonderful achievements of our music students. There will be performances by some of this year’s Encore Nominees, Music Pockets presented to Year 11 musicians eligible for the award and Music Tour highlights.

The Jazz Ensemble will be performing on Sunday afternoon (2pm-5pm) 14th November 2010 at Le Pain Quotidien as part of the young talent development program ‘Soiree to Showcase our Future’. We would like to invite you to come along to hear them play some of their wonderful repertoire and support them in their hard work this year.

Music Tour Reunion Night

We apologise for the rescheduling of the Music Tour Reunion Night due to technical difficulties. The evening has been rescheduled to Monday the 13th of December 2010 at 6:30pm and all tour members and families are invited to attend this evening in the Great Hall. Mr Tony Hannon has spent many, many hours editing the footage so beautifully filmed by Bart Daniels (Yr 10) and Thomas Diep (Yr 11) and will be available on 2x DVDs for all tour members. If you would like to receive your copies on high definition blu-ray discs, please bring in blank discs to Mr Hannon to copy the tour concerts and highlights.

Coles Sports for Schools Campaign

The School has registered to be part of the current Coles Supermarket Sport for Schools campaign, which is running until Sunday 31 October 2010.

Parents and boys can collect vouchers from the cashier when shopping at any Coles Supermarket. Bring these vouchers to School and put them in the box at the Front Office or outside the PE staff room. Even remind your neighbours and relatives to collect vouchers on your behalf. Every $10 spent at Coles Supermarkets will earn a Coles Sports for Schools voucher. The vouchers are redeemable for sports equipment at the end of the promotion.

High VS Riverview

High First Grade defeated Riverview, winning 99-69 with Craig Moller scoring 19 points and Emmett Naar scoring 18.

High Second Grade narrowly lost to Riverview with a score of 45-52 and Blake McGlenchy scoring 15 points and Scott Renzenbrink finishing with 12 points.

Report on Firsts and Seconds Results
Last Saturday the highly anticipated GPS basketball season began at St Ignatius as High started its quest to become GPS Champions for the first time in the school’s history. In the 2nd grade match High gained an early lead but was unable to maintain it before losing out narrowly to Iggies 45-52. However from the moment the first point was scored in the 1st grade match, High looked in control and held a lead throughout the whole match to finish off by beating St Ignatius, 99-69. Overall this is shaping up to be one of the most exciting seasons in the school’s history and as such I urge you all to come and support our two opens teams with 2nd grade starting at 10:00 and 1st grade following at 11:15, especially for our first home game of the season against King’s on the 6th November.

Sydney Schools Shootout Premier Division Win
High won the Sydney Schools Shootout on Saturday night, defeating Newington in the curtain raiser to the home season opener for the Sydney Kings at the Kingdome. High led with a dominant start with a quick 17-6 lead after five minutes and under the guidance of coach Hayman, the ball was pushed up the floor quickly at every opportunity, attacking Newington in transition as often as possible and keeping them on the back foot. Our Australian rep player, ‘Dre’ proved to be dominant as usual and allowed High to have a 35-20 lead at halftime.

Captain Christian Jurlina later knocked down a triple and Sydney High kept dominating with both impressive offence and defence to keep Newington out of the game, winning 58-39. High was awarded the Ken Cole Trophy, named after one of the legendary figures in Australian basketball.
