High Talent
Chris Morrow jumped 2.07m in the High Jump at Homebush at the weekend. Well done! Regular bus commuter, Dr Ganderton, catches the 610 in the mornings from Central. In conversation with Bus Inspectors he was told that Inspectors try to get assigned to the 610 station because it is regarded as the best group in the system to manage. Thank you to the great number of well behaved students using RTA buses.

Sports Equipment Drive – Coles Vouchers
We have always a great need for sports equipment. The latest Coles promotion from September 2 until October 30 allocates points for vouchers available for every $10 spent at Coles. The points are redeemable for sports goods at the end of the promotion. Schools need to register to be eligible for the goods. SBHS is registered. I have kicked off with 16 vouchers in a box at the Front Office. As you might imagine, we will need a very large number of vouchers to get a worthwhile return. Mr Pavone has a box outside the PE staffroom. A box will also be placed in the Andrews Library. We need your support! Ask for the vouchers when you or your parents shop at Coles. If we all work together we can make a difference!

Debating Double - Hume Barbour & Karl Cramp, 2010
SBHS has won the Year 12 and Year 11 PDC debating double for the second time in its history - 1992 was the other occasion. Congratulations to Nakul Bhagwat, Ashwin Rudder, Samir Kinger and Krishan Sivayogarayan who won the PDC Karl Cramp Trophy for Year 11 metropolitan state schools. This is High’s 13th win in the competition since its inception in 1953. A round robin format reduced the 60 competing teams to 14 Zone winners. A knockout phase ensued, reducing the teams to 8 quarter finalists after inter-zone finals. SBHS debated a solid Holsworthy High School in the final. The topic was that we should prosecute the CEOs of companies responsible for environmental accidents. Holsworthy’s line as affirmative was that companies causing major damage to the environment in avoidable circumstances ought to have their CEOs prosecuted in a UN court. They argued that CEOs were responsible for their companies’ actions; that there was nothing to be gained by prosecuting a company itself because nothing changes; and that prosecutions of CEOs would set a standard and act as a deterrent. BP was their key example – a company with a poor safety track record before the recent Gulf of Mexico disaster. SBHS argued a counter model that focussed on the collective responsibility of a company for its actions and the distance of CEOs from daily operational matters in large companies. They proposed attacking the share price of the companies involved by imposing massive fines on the company as a whole and making the companies liable to all compensation claims for the damage they caused. They argued that the effect of their proposals would in most cases lead to the dismissal of the CEO by the Board and a shakeup of company process at all levels. The CEO would be rendered unemployable – a severe punishment in itself. SBHS also contested the legal and equity principle that a person ought not to be prosecuted for the actions of others – “men in hard hats cutting corners”. The adjudicators did not buy the argument that the CEOs were not directly responsible for operational matters, but they did agree that the counter model proposed would be more effective than the affirmative’s and they were uneasy about the legal principles involved in the affirmative’s model. SBHS were declared the winners by a unanimous decision. Ms Berger can now retire from debating with a great sense of accomplishment.

Non-participation in Saturday Sport
At High we strongly believe in pursuing a well rounded education. Our Saturday sporting programs are integral to that education. We need to field senior teams in depth to meet our GPS commitments. It is quite disappointing to read that parents are writing notes to exempt their sons from competing in Saturday sports for non-medical reasons for the summer season. On our letter of offer to students in Year 6 it states very clearly that this school competes on Saturdays in sporting competitions. All parents are aware of our expectations. Activities such as tutoring ought not to be scheduled in competition with school activities. Remedial coaching, as opposed to small group coaching, can be useful but can also be scheduled at the convenience of the client.

What’s Up in the McDonald Senior Library?

The Senior library has been a busy place recently with Year 11s doing that final bit of study before their end of year exams, Year 12 recovering from their Trial HSC exams and last Friday the Year 10s attended a presentation by the author and filmmaker Tristan Bancks. Tristan exposed students to a multimedia show which asked viewers to use all their senses when they write creatively. Visually he had a slide show of various places and experiences he used when writing his novels as well as playing us a selection of music he gathered to inspire mood and meaning in both writing and filmmaking and taste and touch were also evoked when he described various interesting foods and tactile experiences including peanut butter, marshmallow and jam sandwiches and flights using “jetpacks” where the user straps this to his or her back and flies around for several minutes..

He also showed us how he puts “Book Trailers” together using Adobe software and animation. Book Trailers are short films which promote new books just like film trailers whet our interest in new movies! The librarians are interested in utilizing this technique to promote new library books in the future so if you would like to be involved or lend a hand it would be very well received!

Several new books will be on the display shelf this week too and available for loan.

My Private Pectus by Shane Thamm – fits into the Belonging – Identity area of study as supplementary material. This is “[a] story about footy, cars and a young man who discovers that revealing his greatest secret is the only way to hold onto the people he loves” (from book blurb). This book has been shortlisted for the NT Book Awards and CBC Australian book awards in 2010 and deals humorously and sympathetically with male body image.

The Piper’s Son by Melina Marchetta – by the same author who wrote Looking for Alibrandi and Saving Francesca this novel, like the previously reviewed, about a young man who deals with the shocks, tragedies and losses that occur in his life and who comes out the other side valuing his family and friends who help him “put the pieces back together” and show him that he is needed equally as they need him. Again might be useful as supplementary material for English study for HSC.

Maestro by Peter Goldsworthy already listed as an HSC text and available as a new copy in the Senior library.

Tales from Outer Suburbia by Shaun Tan – is a brilliant collection of quirky and “intriguing, illustrated stories about the mysteries that lurk below the surface of suburban life.” Shaun has won many awards and accolades for his “sophisticated” picture books.

Two of my wonderful volunteers, Jenni Rajendram and Kate Price have kindly offered to open the store for your end of term purchases on this day. We are selling out of some very popular items early – this means if you want a pide for lunch, you may well miss out. Order your lunch before school and get what you want!!

Home style food made on site, but we need your help!!

It is pleasing to see students continuing to purchase large volumes of the fresh food we make on site. We mark up our pre-packaged goods to offset the cost of the fresh food and with our volunteer labour, this allows us to keep the price of the healthy homestyle food down - as affordable as possible – and maintain a reasonable profit margin for the school. We absorb any price rises during the year and put prices up, where needed, at the start of each year.

Remember…all Canteen profits are returned to the school for the benefit of our boys’ education and development.

Help Needed
With many Year 12 parents leaving, we are actively seeking new volunteers

If you have never tried helping in the canteen, why not give it a go? It’s a great way to make a really substantial contribution to our school. No need to wait until next year…. ring and introduce yourself! Even if you can only manage the odd day here and there, every bit of help counts. Just ring the Canteen and offer your services

AAGPS Athletics

Saturday 18 September 2010 - Homebush
Not long now until the 2010 AAGPS Athletics Championships and we are looking forward to it. It is a day the whole school looks forward to, a day filled with history, pride and tradition. This is a big day on the AAGPS school calendar and quite a spectacle for both competitors and spectators. So put on your blue and brown and come and cheer.

The school will be providing transport to Homebush with limited seats. The bus leaves the school at 9.00am from Cleveland St and will be returning to Anzac Parade at approximately 4.00pm. Cost is $10 per student for SBHS students only. Permission letters are available at the school office.

Sydney Boys and GPS Athletics
Come support our High Athletes in the AAGPS Athletics Championships at Homebush on the 18 September 2010. This is an opportunity for you to support our athletes who are competing in the prestigious AAGPS Athletics competition. This is the best schoolboys Athletics competition in Australia. Standards are high. High School has the reputation of having the friendliest and most inclusive team in the competition.

History of GPS Athletics
Official competition commenced in 1892. In 1912 the competition was divided into two levels – Senior and Junior. Trophy Senior: first awarded in 1895. The Shield has Championship Shield for Athletics engraved on it. Trophy Junior: first awarded in 1912. Presented to Athletic Association of the Great Public Schools of NSW 11th May 1895. Junior Athletic Championship AAAGPS is engraved on it. Engraved on the back is The Ladies Challenge Plate.

The GPS Athletics Finals
The GPS Athletic season is run for four weeks towards the end of Term 3. The season culminates in the AAGPS Athletics carnival held at Homebush. Here the nine AAGPS schools compete against each other in two different age division. Boys from each year group represent Sydney Boys in these divisions. They compete in front of nearly 10,000 spectators.

Athletics invites you to attend the Athletics dinner for the athletes who competed in the 2010 GPS season.

The evening is an opportunity for the boys to revisit the triumphs and shared experiences of their season. The GPS Team will be announced on the night and there will be prizes for the most improved athlete in each age group. It is also a great opportunity for parents to socialise and show support. I would appreciate your support on this occasion – so please come along.

The High Rowing Challenge

It’s back on ….The High Rowing Challenge starts Saturday 11 September 2010

Old boys, school community, parents and friends If you would like to relive your rowing experience or you'd like to try rowing for the first time ... get involved in the Annual High Rowing Challenge. All ages and abilities welcome.

Enjoy early morning rowing for 6 Saturdays with experienced coaches and coxswains. Enter your own crew of 8 or join others in a crew. It all culminates with a fun mini-regatta on the Back to the Sheds Day.

Driving Lessons at SBHS

Learn to drive safely, correctly and competently with confidence!

Driving lessons are now available to students of Sydney Boys High School who are L plate or P plate drivers.

Peter Hatch, the school’s bus driver, is also a fully qualified professional driving instructor. We are pleased to announce that in association with Bamster Driving School, a dual control manual transmission vehicle is now available to SBHS students for lessons.
