From the Principal
High Talent
School Administration and Support Staff –SASS Appreciation Week Ros and Louise do the switch, the front desk and the mail. Ros also manages ERN, the complicated enrolment system and backs up first aid. Louise looks after the 探花视频 Room, organises Open Day, supplies filing and cataloguing services to the Music Staff, and looks after marketing and school tours. Lorraine is full time on the cash register, receipting money from many sources. Cathy Meaney backs up at the front desk and looks after First Aid in between finance operations. She is also MIC of Rifle Shooting – a big job in itself. Caroline is full time on finance, including fundraising processing, building and library funds and bank reconciliations. Betty looks after all our printing as well as daily production of the Mango Sheet. Christine has a full time job monitoring school attendance: full day, fractional and sport. She maintains all the electronic rolls, communicates directly with parents by SMS, processes all leave requests and informs Teaching staff of attendance issues. They all do many other things from answering phone calls to dealing with Tradesmen, visitors parents and staff. Outside of the Front Office, Cathy Northey manages the school database, liaises with all Year Groups and P & C Sub-committees, spends term 3 on enrolments, looks after deliveries and lost property part of the year and edits the weekly High Notes. She is assisted by Valerie, who is shadowing many roles this term. Based in Macdonald Wing, Annette and Debbie look after a multitude of tasks to enable experiments and practical tests to be delivered by Science Teachers. They also assist in lost property and deliveries. In the two Libraries, Sue, Julia and Sharifa, provide many services directly to students, from processing loans to setting out newspapers and magazines, cataloguing, accessioning, helping with printing and assisting research. Jerry supports a number of our students with special needs and is now assisting Amanda Kaye with Community services as well. Lynne, as my Executive Assistant, does a great many things to keep my office running, to produce a large volume of documents and to make sure I know where I am supposed to be and to whom I will be speaking. She has also edited and produced The Record for 2003 and 2005 – big jobs in themselves. Overseeing all SASS is Sharon – school accountant, Office Manager and Business Manager. Our indoor / outdoor SASS include Neil who handles maintenance and spends a lot of time setting up or packing away chairs and examination tables. Stewart looks after the grass, the trees and the grounds, painting rooms on the side. Non SASS staff are employed to support our assets and programs. They are Brett, who comes over from his main job at McKay to carry out projects and maintenance in the grounds and at the Outterside Centre and Peter, who drives the school buses. So, during next week, when you see SASS people, smile and show your appreciation for what they do for us all.
Information and Communication Technology at High – where does your money go? optic fibre, crowded switches with upgrades and the oldest of our seven servers. Overall responsibility for the network design, staff supervision and financial management of operations is the responsibility of John Prorellis, Head Teacher Administration. Due to his expert efforts and to the wonderful technical expertise of James Rudd, David Isaacs and their assistants, our school network did not crash at all during the year. Our only glitch came with a failed UPS during an electrical surge. Network expenditures 2009

NSW State SRC Conference 2010The annual NSW State SRC Conference brings together over 100 student leaders from across the state providing them with the opportunity to build networks, engage in information sharing and shape the overall direction of the NSW SRC for 2011. On the 3-6 August, I represented Sydney High at the State Conference after being nominated and then elected by other schools at the interschool regional meeting to represent the 229 schools that constitute the Sydney Region. The overarching theme of Accept, Engage, Time for Change shaped many of the inspiring presentations, discussions and workshops at the Conference. Over the four days we took part in a range of motivational activities from developing our interpersonal skills to establishing effective communication channels within the SRC, to tackling issues such as the environment and student participation in schools. Aside from these invaluable sessions, each day of the conference provided delegates with fun activities including Motivational Media, African Drumbeats, Beach Volleyball and a dance organised by the CRUSH Organisation. However, perhaps the most important feature of the Conference was the student-led Student Forum. The forum provided the opportunity for students from a diverse range of backgrounds to present their concerns and ideas to help shape the focus of the NSW SRC for 2011. As a member of the Sydney Region, our regional team formulated a recommendation for the NSW SRC to investigate the creation of an action plan to deal with concerns of Cyberbullying between students. A total of ten recommendations put forward by the ten NSW regions were debated at the Student Forum, however only two eventuated in passing after a conscious vote. Of which one was the recommendation put forward by the Sydney Region!
All in all, having the opportunity to meet such a diverse range of students from across the state
and to share information on “what works, and what doesn’t” in SRCs has been a
privilege. There are a number of key messages and ideas that I hope to take back to the SRC at
Sydney High such that together we can achieve our vision of creating a positive learning
environment for students within the school.
From the Two LibrariesBOOK DONATIONSIt is really great when our staff show support for the difficulties our Libraries face in procuring new resources to encourage our boys to read. So, huge thanks to Cathy Meaney, (Rifle shooting and the Front Office and mother of ex-student Jackson Meaney), for her very thoughtful donation, as the result of a yearly book cleanout. She has given the Andrews Library 29 books for our new book shelves. This is very welcome. Thanks also to Mr Paul Wright from English for thinking our Library might like to distribute the spoils from the winner of the Write Now Competition, Year 7, Oliver Tseu-Tjoa. Great win Oliver and thanks to you also for presenting 18 new books to the Junior Library. If parents are cleaning books off their home shelves our boys read both children’s and adult books as many of them are quite advance readers. Our Junior Library is quite desperate for new books and appreciates any donations that are less than 5 years old. LOTS OF LIBRARY SPACE FOR INTERESTED TEACHERS IN THE ANDREWS LIBRARYThe Andrews Library has just commenced analysing use statistics. All teachers are reminded that they can book class space or computer space in the Andrews Library. The Library is an ideal big space for classes to engage in film scripting or other group work activities. Classes have a 66% chance of being able to book into the class area if not pre-booked. Junior classes who do not have laptops can be booked in to the Andrews Library computer classroom to use the 30 PCs there. Again teachers have a 63% chance of booking in to use the computer area in the Andrews Library if not pre-booked. Bookings can be made on Room Booking on teachers computers. JUNIOR FICTION What’s Up in the McDonald Senior LibraryThere have been some changes to the way the Senior library is used. We are focusing much more on having a space where students can come to study and use the resources of the library and moving away from a previous expectation for socialising and relaxation. Although it is important for the library to have a warm and welcoming atmosphere for students it is also vital that everyone can study in peace without the distraction of excess noise. To this end computer games are completely banned in the library and those found playing them on any device including those owned by students will be asked to leave. If people persist detentions may be given so please make sure you are doing the right thing and keep the library a good space for serious study and research. Don’t forget to make use of the Online resources available for your research assignments and if you need any help utilizing these please ask Ms Gordon. She is expert in the use of such databases and will be able to assist you find what you require. You can find these resources through your student portal and clicking on Online databases. Encyclopaedia Britannica is excellent for articles on most topics to get a good overview or definition. JSTOR is a scholarly database excellent for articles from journals on most topics in History, Social Sciences, English etc. You will find that information sourced and quoted from these databases will gain you better marks in your assignments especially if you can use them to support your essay arguments. Your teachers will recognise that you explored further than Wikipedia!
New books added to the McDonald Library collection this week include: 61 Hours by Lee Child – The latest Jack Reacher thriller set in an icy winter snow storm in South Dakota. Jack once again must try to do what he always does and that is be the hero of this story. Mao’s Last Dancer by Li Cunxin – the story of a boy chosen to join Madame Mao’s school of ballet and to become a cultural delegate for the People’s Republic of China. Li Cunxin’s autobiography tells how this opportunity leads to a life outside the desperate poverty of north-east China and eventually to life in Australia. It is also an inspirational story about a family and the courage, love and sacrifices of a mother to ensure her son’s freedom and a new life during a time of revolution, upheaval and chaos in China. The Dragonbone Chair by Tad Williams – Book one in a series of four fantasy titles about a kitchen boy and sorcerer’s apprentice, Simon who...”dreams of great deeds and heroic wars. Volunteer help is vital in ensuring healthy food for our boys and an ongoing income stream to the P&C for allocation to worthy school projects. We’d like to say thank you by rewarding our volunteers with the chance to win a $10 Canteen voucher for their sons. All volunteers have to do is turn up for duty as usual and sign the duty roster book. A draw will be held each month for the lucky voucher winner. SBHS DebatingA disappointing note on behaviourThere have been several instances this season where the general standard of behaviour has fallen below what is expected of boys representing High in GPS debating. Each week I am having to chastise coaching groups because they are unable to focus and participate in development. This is unacceptable behaviour and may result in suspension from competition. Additionally, boys need to ensure they are arriving at away venues BY 5.45pm – no later! They must then ensure they are showing respect for our hosts in leaving rooms neat and tidy. GPS – Round 4 v IggiesWe are home again this week and I remind all students that they need to ensure their debate room is prepared AT THE END OF COACHING. Unless the room is being used for the debate after it is then the responsibility of each team to pack the room back up. Parent MentorsWE ARE LOOKING FOR NEW PARENT MENTORSA Parent Mentor is an informal contact person who will welcome New Parents into the School Community and is available to them to help them through the difficulties encountered in their first year at the School. The aim is to have every parent of a new boy starting at the School matched up with a mentoring parent already at the School. The role of the Mentoring Parent is
The scheme is informal, without a lot of structure and depends for its success on the enthusiasm of the Mentors. The scheme has worked extremely well for four years and has not been at all onerous. All the Mentor Parents this year have enjoyed it tremendously and the New Parents have been extremely receptive and grateful for the contact. SENIOR RUGBY
Each individual senior player can check their Conditioning and Rugby training attendance on spreadsheets posted on the SNR Rugby Notice Board located in the Canteen Area. GPS results
1st XV The 1st round game against Joeys was exciting and promising. The team displayed enough discipline and structure in their attack and defence to indicate this team is capable of winning at this level. The result 12-0 to Joeys was definitely a positive one with many of the players feeling they could have won that game if they had maintained possession long enough in the transition and green zone. The 2nd round game against Kings was unfortunately cancelled due to wet weather ground closure. The 3rd round fixture against St Ignatius had to be played midweek and at St Ignatius. The constant rain and loss of home team advantage did not deter the team from successfully recording their first GPS win of the season, 18-7. In muddy and wet conditions High demonstrated an enthusiastic whole team effort to successfully control the game, even with one player in the bin. It was pleasing to see the players celebrate and enjoy their win; spectators noted one tight head prop dancing in the mud and rain. The 4th round against Newington at Newington was another triumphant encounter 23-10. At half time the team realised there is no such thing as an easy game and had to up the tempo by improving their enthusiasm and communication. This resulted in High scoring 6 tries. 2 tries seemed legitimate but were disallowed. The best try of the season resulted in a flowing backline movement which the backs and Mr Aldous had been working hard on all year. Congratulations, boys. From a coaching perspective I am extremely happy to once again recognise a player’s excellent conditioning & training log and provide him with an opportunity to play 1st XV this year. Gareth Deacon like James Erickson last year may have slipped under the radar if it was not for their logging efforts. Gareth’s game performance also vindicated his selection. Well done.

In recent weeks, the 16As defeated Oxley College, Bowral and lost hard fought matches to
Newington College and Shore. This season should not be measured on a win loss record, but on the
commitment, positive attitude and work ethic shown by a wonderful group of young men. The 1st XV player must consistently complete at least 5 sessions of training a week.
The 2nd XV and 16A player must consistently log 4 sessions of training a week.
Note: Only under special known circumstances can players opt to include an extra strength
session to make up for a missed Rugby training session.
Monday 3:30 to 5:30pm at Moore Park West Wet weather - Training is always on and snr players are to meet at the gym. Players must submit a signed note from their parent or guardian if unable to attend a training session preferably before the event.
A small number of players have indicated they want to play rugby but find it difficult to follow
the strict training schedule for a variety of reasons. Unfortunately, the school cannot provide
sporting references or student sporting awards to the senior students who have played limited
rugby or do not log consistently. Many institutions (eg Sydney University) are now seeking
students who not only perform academically but respond strongly to sporting challenges. Please
check your logging before you think you should be rewarded for your participation in GPS
Rugby.

1st Grade Drew 2 – 2
Playing on McKay 2 for the first time High 1st XI
relished the firm surface and played an attractive passing game to consistently pressure Scots.
With a strong breeze at their backs in the first half, High took the lead through a goal to
tireless striker Jeremy Rajendram. Scots equalised shortly after. However, High’s advantage
was restored courtesy of a determined Jim Koukouras effort. The second half saw High’s
make-shift defence, minus captain Antony Paul and their other central defender, Nakul Bhagwat,
defend grimly. With a high set line, High pressured Scots into playing the long ball which was
easily cleaned up by keeper Josh Sutton who had another superb match.
2nd Grade Won 3-1
By far 2nds best performance of the year. They were more organised
and creative than their Scots opponents and scored some excellent team goals. The focus on team
work and structure is starting to pay off, with High’s attacking players enjoying the extra
time provided by the intelligent positional play from all members of the team. Goals scorers

Volleyball Report
First Grade Report
The Trans-Pacific Schools Cup was not your normal volleyball
Schools Cup Tournament. Along with all of the normal school teams competing, there were a number
of teams on tour from America, all vying to stake their claim on a surprisingly impressive
trophy. The Sydney High First grade team suffered a slow start, taking their time in defeating
Rooty Hill, and again in defeating a weakened Prairiewood outfit, who were missing their state
representative player. However the team really hit their form in their third pool game, against
their arch rival team from Menai. Moving into the finals, the First grade team were brimming with
confidence, however had a hiccup against a strong Carlingford team, barely taking the first set
25-23. The second set was a completely different story however, with the game being stopped by
time limit when High were up 20-8. The final was set to be an epic rematch of the CHS Knockout,
High versus Westfields Sports High. The first two sets were both tight, with both teams being in
the twenties at the end. The third set proved to be a nail biter, with High being down 12-13.
However, a raucous rendition of the school song led by DSL shifted the momentum back to High to
help them take the final set, the game, and the Trans-Pacific Cup, 15-13. It was a fun, tough
day, which all the teams from High enjoyed and had reasonable amounts of success in.

Second Grade Report
The Second Grade side had an early start to the Trans Pacific
Tournament. The first game was against another Sydney High team. Dominant players Leon Wang and
Harry Tran on the opposition presented a strong attack against the Second Grade defence, however
strong blocking by Shiraz was supported by consistent setting of Ennes, bringing High to a
convincing straight set win to start off the morning.
The second game was against another Sydney High team, this team featuring some more experienced players. Jun Park stepped up to the position of outside hitter and managed to create some strong offensive opportunities for the second grade squad. Justin Yang switched to a setting position to shut out the opposition’s offensive attack, filling in the role of missing setter Ennes. High struggled in the first set and dropped the second but picked up in the third with the unpredictable hitting of universal player Nathan, bringing High to another convincing win in the third set, bringing them to their first finals in the metro tournament.
The final was a tough game against the never before seen Kelso. Having already beaten another
High team, the Second Grade squad was determined to defeat the newcomers. High stepped into the
first set confidently however passing errors and lack of communication led to a demoralizing
first set. High fought back hard in the second set, with strong hits from Nathan and Jun leading
the team to a ten point streak. However the leading Kelso hitter played tactically, manipulating
the gaps in the Second Grade defence and eventually bringing High down in an epic finish.
Congratulations Second Grade on becoming the runners-up in the Trans Pacific Tournament

Football Dinner 2010
SBHS Football will celebrate the efforts and achievements of our boys as well as acknowledge staff, coaches and supporters at the SBHS Football dinner on Thursday 26th August.
The coach of each team has been invited to attend the dinner as a guest.
Players are asked to take responsibility on a team-by-team basis for any end-of-season gifts to their team's coach.

The cost of the dinner will be $30 per adult and student. For children under 11 yrs old there is a special rate of $20.
Payment for the dinner must be made at the Main Office by Friday 13th August.

Capital Campaign 2010
An email has been sent to all parents for whom we have email addresses, updating them on the Capital Campaign. A group of fellow parents will be telephoning as many parents as possible over the next few weeks to answer any questions you may have regarding SBHS Capital Campaign 2010.
