Global Leadership Convention
On the 11th of June, I and three other Sydney High students attended the World Vision Global
Leadership Convention at Sydney Olympic Park. The focus of the Convention was to raise awareness
about the Global Food Crisis and empower student leaders to take action. Throughout the day, we
heard talks, watched videos, and took part in brainstorming sessions and interactive activities
that made us consider the serious implications of the increasing world food prices that are
forcing an added 100 million people in the world into starvation. For me, the convention was a
real eye-opener and it was a very enriching experience. One of the ways we can help to resolve
the Global Food Crisis is to sign up for the 40 Hour Famine. Just go to the world vision website
and register.
Sports DonationsGPS sports competition is very demanding on people and resources. At High we have ongoing needs for facilities development, equipment and development through expert coaching. If you would like to help through a tax deductible donation for a particular sport, the appropriate form can be posted to you by calling 9361 6910. Off to England
Corporal Brendan Leo Three members of Knox Grammar School Cadet Unit will complete the Aussie team. Our OC, Major Knowles will be the Team Commandant and Mr Chris Budd from Sydney High Rifle Club will be Team Coach. The team will find time for some sightseeing including visits to London, Duxford and Portsmouth. In order to be available for selection in the High teams at the GPS Rifle competition on 20-21 Jul, the cadet team will return to Sydney on Sunday 18th July. A farewell reception will be held at the School on Thu 1 July at 6.30pm Interestingly, High cadets and officers have been selected for every Australian cadet shooting team to England since the first tour in 1911!
July Promotion Courses Preparing to take the first steps up the promotion ladder at the Junior Leaders Course will be : Cadet Ken Li Cadet Matthew Zhang Cadet Ronald Tran Corporal James Lee will be attending the Senior NCO course in preparation for Sergeant rank. AAC National Youth Conference The two day conference was attended by senior officers from National Headquarters and selected cadets from around the country. Venue for the residential Conference was a city hotel, providing a welcome change from barracks accommodation. The conference gave youth members an opportunity to hear visiting experts in youth development speak of recent trends and ideas and allowed cadet members to provide feed back to our national commanders.

Music Notes
Music Tour 2010 to France & Flanders A letter from the Department of Veterans’ Affairs in appreciation of our involvement in the ANZAC Day Dawn service is included [in the PDF version of this issue of High Notes]. All students involved worked very hard in the preparation leading up to the tour and performed with excellence throughout the trip. Congratulations on your wonderful efforts and representing Sydney Boys High so proudly at the ANZAC Day Dawn service.
Fromelles The concert in the Church began at 6pm with the whole set. All strings, concert band, stage band and soloists performed. The highlight of the concert was the stage band, performing a sharp, powerful and precise set of ‘Sydney By Night’, ‘Recycled Blues’ and ‘I Still Call Australia Home’ (featuring Christian Katsikaros). The response from the crowd was electric, particularly after the trombone battle between Steve Cominos and Cameron Morrison. The result was a unified applause, like that of a Sydney Boys High School Assembly, allowing for a much welcomed encore.
The Mayor of Fromelles took plenty of time to thank us at the finish on behalf of the town
through the interpreter and invited us to a ‘light’ dinner where we were in fact fed
like kings (no one could finish dessert except for Edric). The bus ride back to Albert was spent
bursting out into chants for the whole hour. I have never seen such an elated group of people.
The memory of Fromelles will surely be cherished by all the boys and teachers.

Rowing Committee AGM
Date: Tuesday 27 July 2010 Come and find out about new developments for the upcoming season. Rowing is a great sport that High provides for our boys. It also relies on parents to help facilitate the program and, as with any sport, always needs new parents becoming involved. All parents of rowing students are encouraged to attend the Annual General Meeting. All Office Bearer positions will be declared vacant and available for nomination and election. I hope you can attend and become involved in your son's sport.

Football - The Onion Bag
GPS season begins High’s 1st Grade team suffered a disappointing loss, 6-2 to a strong, well organised King’s outfit. After a bright start with High taking the lead through a Jeremy Rajendram goal, High failed to cope with King’s attacking raids. High’s inability to clear the ball effectively from their 18 yard box enabled King’s to slot home several soft goals which ended the contest. . A consolation goal to captain, Antony Paul, was the one shining light. His individual effort, which started near the halfway line, beating several King’s defenders with a weaving run into the box, where he calmly stroked to ball into the far corner, was a goal of the highest order. In the 2nd Grade match High fought back from conceding an early goal to earn their first points of the season thanks to an equaliser from Siva Sooriakumar.

Football Uniform ChangesAttention all SBHS Football playersShow HIGH SPIRIT by always wearing FULL football uniform when playing for your school. The new SHS junior football strip is being phased in this year. All 13s teams are to wear the new strip. All other teams are to wear the traditional strip. Under now circumstances should teams take the field with a combination of both! If boys need a traditional strip (no longer sold in the High Store), Anne Wall has a few that can be obtained free of charge. Call Anne on 0423 172 762 for more details. Note: All SHS football teams will wear the new strip next year. Goalkeepers - if you do not have a school keeper's jersey, please see Mr Gifford. Anyone with a school keeper's jersey who no longer requires one should return it to Mr Gifford ASAP.
Tennis - Stan Jones CupOn the 24th of May and the 7th of June, Sydney Boys High competed in the Stan Jones Cup. It is the annual CHS tournament for school teams. Our team consisted of four players with Number 1 Arman Abdollahi, Number 2 Patrick Rynsaardt, Number 3 George Panas and Number 4 Lachlan Day. On the first day we played in the first leg of the tournament which was a round robin. The teams we were up against were Sylvania, Rose Bay and James Cook. We played a total of 18 sets and we won 17 of them 6-0, making small work of the other teams. The lowlight of the day was when Arman won his singles match 6-1, dropping one game and ruining our whitewash streak. We came first in this leg and progressed onto the quarterfinals.
We knew that the quarterfinals and semifinals would have similar results to those in the last
leg. This was true as we again whitewashed Gymea and almost whitewashed Kirrawee, only dropping a
single set. Although we had the easiest run to the finals, another team was doing equally well.
We met Endeavour Sports in the final with high hopes. We were off to a great start with our
Number 1 Doubles Pair Arman Abdollahi and Patrick Rysnaardt playing some outstanding doubles to
come away with a 7-5 win. This was the highlight of the final. The Number 2 Doubles Pair were
unlucky to come away with a loss. With rubbers tied at 1-all, there was tension between the two
teams as each team needed to win three singles matches to win. There was some hope when Number 2
George Panas fought back from 4-1 down but was unlucky to come away with a loss. Number 1 Arman
Abdollahi fought hard but was outplayed by a strong opponent. Number 2 Patrick Rynsaardt was
unlucky to lose against a solid opponent as was Number 4 Lachlan Day. Being runners-up in 2010,
we are looking forward to winning next year.

7.00pm, Wednesday 30th June, Great Hall The Five Greatest Challenges for Parents in 2010The joint Sydney Boys and Sydney Girls P&C meeting for this year – 7.00pm, Wednesday 30th June, in the Great Hall – will feature Dr Michael Carr-Gregg speaking on The Five Greatest Challenges for Parents in 2010, including aspects of online safety, alcohol, sleep and other key issues. This is a fantastic opportunity to hear one of Australia’s leading voices on adolescents and we urge parents to attend this P&C presentation. Dr Michael Carr-Gregg is one of Australia's highest profile psychologists and is described by the Sunday Age, as one of the country's leading authorities on teenage behaviour. He specialises in the areas of parenting adolescents and adolescent mental health. Michael is the Consultant Psychologist to the Victorian Secondary Schools Principals’ Association and is a founding member of the National Coalition Against Bullying. He is an official ambassador for beyondblue and Mindmatters - one of 16 youth suicide prevention programs run by the Federal Government - and has served on the advisory committee for the Federal Government's Boys' Education Lighthouse School Programme. Educated in Kenya, the UK, Australia and New Zealand, Michael is married with two sons. For seven years he worked as an Associate Professor in the Department of Paediatrics at the University of Melbourne, before going into private practice in the Melbourne suburb of Kew. Michael has worked in private practice as a family therapist, child psychologist and clinical psychologist, as an academic, researcher and spent four years working as a political lobbyist. He wrote his PhD on adolescents with cancer at the University of NSW which resulted in the formation of CanTeen - a support group for teenagers with cancer in 1984. Michael has a high media profile working on national TV on Channel 7's Sunrise and The Morning Show as well as Fairfax Radio 3AW. He is a columnist for Girlfriend and Australian Doctor and has written six books, including the best selling Princess Bitchface Syndrome - how to survive teenage girls for Penguin in 2007 and has just finished another book When to Really Worry which was released in 2010. Dr Michael Carr-Gregg is an informed, entertaining and inspiring speaker addressing some of the most critical issues for our adolescents today. This is a great opportunity for High parents to hear his insights. Supper will be served following the presentation.
