High Talent
Well done to Justin Chan, Angud Chawla, Antony Paul and Max Phillis who won all three of their debates to win the zone in the Premier’s Debating Competition for the Hume Barbour trophy. Andrija Dumovic has been selected to represent Australia in China in June in U17 basketball. Emmett Naar has been selected in the Australian U17 Train On squad for basketball. Congratulations, boys! A great result was reported this week for Francis Torok (Year 11) who won the Under 20 NSW Road Running Championship in a time of 32.02 for 10kms. Congratulations to our open basketball team for their defeat of Muswellbrook High to qualify for the last 16 in the CHS Knockout Competition. Congratulations to the Open High Volleyball Team that won the NSW All Schools championship, defeating Prairiewood High in the final. Another great victory for the volleyball program and Mr Kay! Good news for rugby with the selection of George Denny-Smith, Bill Wang and Dominic Edgtton in the Sydney East CHS representative team. Congratulations, boys! Travelling on trains
Parents, please help us by reminding your sons that when they are travelling on trains with free passes paid for by taxpayers, that they are required, as a condition of their passes, to stand up if there are insufficient seats for paying customers. I have had a complaint this week that boys on the Granville to Central line are habitually ignoring standing passengers. This behaviour is unacceptable. High boys are expected to be responsible and behave appropriately at all times! One boy was identified, interviewed and given detention for misusing his train pass in this way just this week!

Encapsulation Works – Update
Works beside the gym on the Anzac Parade side have nearly been completed with new bitumen, widened concrete pathways and bordered garden beds. On the SGHS side, bitumen has been laid from the roadway to the building, new kerbing installed and a drainage pit dug to catch the runoff from the hill. The road down to The Flat has been kerbed and flattened out. Due to the rain this week the project has been delayed.

Winter Uniform
Now that some rainy and wintry weather is upon us I appeal to parents to remind their sons to wear warm but appropriate clothing. Full school uniform is expected. Non-uniform coats, beanies, ‘hoodies’, jackets or scarves are not acceptable. Apart from school jumpers and blazers, the High Store stocks approved beanies and scarves for winter wear. For those who feel the cold, white skivvies may be worn underneath your school shirt, as long as the school tie is still worn. A little rain and chill should not be allowed to dampen our school pride.

Use of School Diaries
Personal management issues are responsible for most of the underachievement among gifted students. We need your sons to be switched on in order to cope with their very busy lifestyles. Ask your son for his School diary to see the good features that it contains. The diary contains all the important school policies. It has explanations of important learning vocabulary, such as text types and active verbs that set expectations for student assessment. Apart from a full school calendar, it contains a weekly planning page with a line for a parent’s signature. Your son should be writing all his homework tasks in the diary, along with due dates for assignments, projects or test dates. You can liaise with your son’s teachers to sign off on completed homework tasks. The best thing about using a diary is that it facilitates prioritising tasks around commitments. I urge you to speak about diary use with your son.

Year 12 Reports
Year 12s will be issued with their reports at their interviews with the Principal. These are scheduled for Tuesday to Thursday, 25-27/5. Quite a few students will need to have Clearance Forms signed to clear commitments eg weights room, co-payments for sports, captains’ reports for summer sports for The Record or unpaid library fines. Please fulfil the clearance requirements before attempting to collect your report.

BOOK FAIR – all credit card ordering
LAST HIGH NOTES BEFORE BOOK FAIR – FRIDAY MAY 28 – all orders credit card transactions!
In order to provide new fiction in both Libraries this year the 2 librarians are running a Book Fair. Our hope is that each student will “read/donate” one novel he will really enjoy reading. All books donated will acknowledge your son as donor with a special plate inside. Your son will be notified as soon as his book is covered (so he can have first read) on the library notice board.

Each library will have a specially selected display for either Senior or Junior boys. Seniors will have the opportunity to delight the boys who follow them into the senior years by selecting great new books for their new book library. They have their own special order form and supplier - The Children’s Bookshop at Beecroft who specialise in books for Gifted and Talented boys. Ordering instructions are on .

Hopefully, on the day of the Fair, Junior boys will be looking at the 1000 plus books on the Library Thing website displayed under Book Fair view full catalogue on . Borders bookstore at Bondi Junction has co-operated in the construction of the lists and has agreed to provide the book display as a community service. Big thanks to them! All Junior ordering will be through Borders Online who have agreed to a 20% off discount obtained by quoting the Book Fair voucher number BAE-3312 and making the delivery address, Sydney Boys High School, Moore Park, Surry Hills, 2010. Ordering can be done right now to ensure your son gets the book he wants to read.

As classes move through the displays and select books, the books will be removed to ensure that we do not get the same book multiple times. It is a good idea to place an early bird order.

For boys unable to take up the online credit card option a Sydney Books bus will be parked on the school grounds. Boys can make choices by visiting the bus before school, recess and lunchtime.

Every boy will be asked to select a book on the day even if he is not donating and this list will be used to select library books boys actually like. We are asking all boys to bring this information home to you also.

Parents please be on the lookout for the ordering information which will come home in your son’s bag on Friday 28th May. Senior forms need to be returned to Mrs Gordon. Junior ordering is an online transaction by parents with Borders Online. Of course any book on Borders database can be ordered. The specially selected list on Library Thing is a guide but there are other books on Borders Online smorgasbord which the boys know are just as good.

Huge thanks to my great staff and all boys who have already assisted us with constructing the 1000 plus book list. Thanks to the IT guys. Many thanks also to the poster creators. EXAMS OR ASSIGNMENTS – LOOKING FOR RESOURCES? See online databases!
Don’t forget to use JStor - we subscribe! This can be accessed online from home (portal) or your school computer. This has more reliable provenance than the Internet in that it is an academic database. Other academically reliable databases can be accessed using your local library card or by acquiring a State Library card – can be instant if you visit the State Library!

Your Library Catalogue is also a resource database and can be searched from home via the portal – it tells you if resources are out on loan as well.

From The McDonald (Senior) Library

Both libraries are preparing for a successful Book Fair on Friday the 28th May which is fast approaching! There will be a large choice of many new and exciting fiction and non- fiction books potentially to be added to the library collections. Seniors are encouraged to go into the Book Fair webpage where they can peruse titles in the senior list and hopefully donate. Discounts of 15% apply to all titles, so check the list. To donate you will need to choose a title, fill out the order form available on the webpage or included in this High Notes article, and hand in to Ms Gordon in the McDonald Library.

The senior books are supplied from a different bookshop to Borders so you will not be able to order online but your ordered title (you can pre-order if you like) will be put aside on the day of the fair in your name. We are unable to accept cash payment for these books, credit card payment is necessary.

The Sydney Books van will be visiting on the day also with lots of latest fiction and study guides for prelim and HSC courses for you to choose from. All students are welcome to visit the van and select titles. Payment for books from the van will be by cash or credit card. Finally, if you donate a book you will be recognised in our collection forever by having your name on a bookplate inside the book! You will be the first to read your chosen title and, more importantly, you will leave a lasting legacy for other students at SBHS to see and take advantage of.

Aside from hoping for lots of donations via our Book Fair to add to our Senior collection, we are pleased to announce that finally there are books available to be borrowed in the McDonald Library! Study guides have made their way back here and some senior fiction with lots more to come. So have a browse and let us know what you would like to see in our collection.

Special mention of the chocolates that travelled a long way from Belgium – an unexpected gesture that makes Karen and Tracey’s hard work seem all the more worthwhile!!

Volleyball Report

Metropolitan Friday Tournament
Sydney High showed dominant presence in the prestigious NSW Metropolitan tournament last Friday, with a total of 6 teams entering. We have perennially been a successful volleyball school and this year has proved to be no exception. Sydney High’s 1st Grade had a hard earned victory over Carlingford High School in the first game but cruised to the finals where we met Prariewood High School. After a relatively easy first set, Prariewood would not go down east and came out firing in the second set. We found ourselves in a difficult situation as we were down 24-21, however, we kept our cool and won the set and the game. This win was essential in maintaining our undefeated winning streak.

The 16s competed in their first tournament of the season with great enthusiasm. Despite many players in the team playing together for the first time we soon found our rhythm and started winning points. We started well with a convincing win over Rooty Hill and then breezed through our group stages with two more wins, dropping only one set along the way. This set up a final between SBHS and Blainey. Despite some great spikes and points won by Max Song we unfortunately suffered a narrow loss, going down in two sets with a score line of 25-23. It was a great day and we had lots of fun. We look forward to the rest of the season and bettering this result.

Seconds Volleyball GPS
Saturday marked the first official GPS game for Seconds Volleyball, debuting against an increasingly growing Newington. The new found squad was still unsure of the full capabilities of the team and was desperate to test out the new players Shiraz, Alan and Pat. Missed serves proved to be a problem once again, following on from the Metro tournament the day before. New found height from Shiraz allowed for a new range of extensive offensive and defensive plays. With minimal effort, Shiraz was able to hit over the top of feeble blocks and at times even dig the ball down over the net, winning many unconventional points. Newington second grade stood stunned by Ennes’s serves, unable to return over ten consecutive serves. Easy points were won with Newington losing points due to self made errors. Strong spin on the spikes of Justin Yang prevented any passing opportunities for Newington and new found player Pat debuted with many point winning tips, giving himself a dominant role in the new Second Grade squad. Although High struggled in the first set, taking time to warm up, the second and third set allowed for new players Pat and Allan to come on court and dominate with accurate passing and assisting roles. High breezed through the match 25-19, 25-12, 25-15. Well done on a strong first match Second Grade!

Congratulations Boys!
Our Friday Evening Debating Competition semi finals are upon us with Years 8 and 11 contesting their semis this week at Barker. Our Year 10s are put to the test next week in their semi final at Barker.

The topic areas are international politics and social policy respectively. The FED Grand Final will be held in week 7. Good luck, boys!

PARKING – brilliant effort
Huge thanks to all boys and parents who got involved in our parking event over the weekend. We had a successful and very busy day in which just under $3000 was raised for the debating program.

GPS Selections
The GPS competition is a prestigious debating competition that runs in 3rd term. In order to select our teams we hold trial debates during term 2 in order to give any interested boys an opportunity to showcase their debating abilities.

Further selections information will be available in coaching and will be emailed out to parents for their reference.

In general, however, all years will apply the following criteria in selecting teams:

• Performance in Trial Debate
• Performance in competition debates so far
• Performance in coaching (quizzes and coaching activities)
• Overall behaviour and demonstrated commitment to the coaching program

All parents should be advised that these teams are crafted based on the experience of the coaches with all the boys across the coaching year groups. Year 7 parents should not be concerned that their son has not had many opportunities for competition debating – as we focus on giving each boy (in a large coaching group) at least 1 chance of debating. In turn the Trial performance AND their coaching performances are of special importance.

The Online P&C forum is now open and many parents have their password and are participating. It seems that access to an Online P&C is a welcome initiative for parents that we can progressively improve and build upon.

There is a series of discussion questions on which the School is seeking feedback. It has already been raised through the Online P&C, that language is a likely barrier for parents in actively participating in the School community and in just finding out what is going on. The School is very aware of this and has just now had a parent who has offered translation skills – thank you.

In the next few weeks we will investigate having P&C notices and information distributed in Chinese. In the meantime it would be great if parents who are bilingual could assist their friends and fellows parents in spreading the news about how easy and rewarding it is to help out with an activity your son is involved in or volunteering for Canteen. Many parent canteen volunteers do make the comment that their English skills grow enormously from talking to students over the Canteen counter. Details on how to volunteer to help in the School community can be found on the school website and follow the P&C links.

Joint P&C SBHS and SGHS – 7.00pm, Wednesday 30th June, Great Hall

Note the date has been changed for our joint meeting with SGHS parents from Wednesday 23rd June to Wednesday, 30th June with an earlier start time of 7.00pm. This evening is not like a regular P&C meeting, but an opportunity for High parents to meet and mingle with parents from the girls’ school following a presentation from a speaker specifically arranged for the evening. This year we are hosting and have arranged for Dr Michael Carr-Gregg to address us on The Five Greatest Challenges for Parents in 2010. Dr Michael Carr-Gregg is one of Australia's highest profile psychologists and is described by the Sunday Age, as one of the country's leading authorities on teenage behaviour. He specialises in the areas of parenting adolescents and adolescent mental health. This is a great opportunity for our parents to hear from an expert. Dr Carr-Gregg is an informed, entertaining and most inspiring speaker on some of the most critical issues for our adolescents today. Supper will be served following the presentation.

The Five Greatest Challenges for Parents in 2010

The joint Sydney Boys and Sydney Girls P&C meeting for this year – 7.00pm, Wednesday 30th June, in the Great Hall – will feature Dr Michael Carr-Gregg speaking on The Five Greatest Challenges for Parents in 2010, including aspects of online safety, alcohol, sleep and other key issues. This is a fantastic opportunity to hear one of Australia’s leading voices on adolescents and we urge parents to attend this P&C presentation.

Dr Michael Carr-Gregg is one of Australia's highest profile psychologists and is described by the Sunday Age, as one of the country's leading authorities on teenage behaviour. He specialises in the areas of parenting adolescents and adolescent mental health. Michael is the Consultant Psychologist to the Victorian Secondary Schools Principals’ Association and is a founding member of the National Coalition Against Bullying. He is an official ambassador for beyondblue and Mindmatters - one of 16 youth suicide prevention programs run by the Federal Government - and has served on the advisory committee for the Federal Government's Boys' Education Lighthouse School Programme.

Educated in Kenya, the UK, Australia and New Zealand, Michael is married with two sons. For seven years he worked as an Associate Professor in the Department of Paediatrics at the University of Melbourne, before going into private practice in the Melbourne suburb of Kew. Michael has worked in private practice as a family therapist, child psychologist and clinical psychologist, as an academic, researcher and spent four years working as a political lobbyist. He wrote his PhD on adolescents with cancer at the University of NSW which resulted in the formation of CanTeen - a support group for teenagers with cancer in 1984. Michael has a high media profile working on national TV on Channel 7's Sunrise and The Morning Show as well as Fairfax Radio 3AW. He is a columnist for Girlfriend and Australian Doctor and has written six books, including the best selling Princess Bitchface Syndrome - how to survive teenage girls for Penguin in 2007 and has just finished another book When to Really Worry which was released in 2010.

Dr Michael Carr-Gregg is an informed, entertaining and inspiring speaker addressing some of the most critical issues for our adolescents today. This is a great opportunity for High parents to hear his insights.

Wet Weather Information

Saturday Sport

For regular updates on Saturday sport during times of inclement weather, parents and students are asked to check the school’s website throughout the day. The information can be found by going to the school’s website at then by clicking on the fixture details under the heading of ‘Upcoming events’ i.e. Saturday, May 22 TAS v SHS. Cancellations can then be found by scrolling down the page to the specific sport and team. If there is no information specific to sport cancellations then assume by default that sport will go ahead. Please note that the current ‘Sports Wet Weather line’ is inoperable.

Changes to Sport Policy

Students and parents should read the changes to the School’s Sport Policy which is detailed on the school’s website and outlined below: :

Sport Policy
Sydney Boys High encourages participation in team sports for educational reasons. Team sports build a sense of belonging in boys, a connectedness with the school; teamwork skills are developed; individual self-confidence and self-esteem are enhanced through group endeavour; and socialisation at school is fostered through ready topics of conversation among team members. Teams help and protect their members.

Sydney Boys High is unique among NSW state secondary schools due to its membership since 1906 of the Athletic Association of Great Public Schools, formed in 1892 to order and regulate sporting fixtures for schools with senior students. The other eight members of this Association (commonly called the 'GPS') are private schools.

The school expects students to engage in at least one GPS sport per year. This commitment includes Saturday competition. We encourage boys to get involved in aerobic fitness activities (the athletics and cross country programs) to help them in their chosen sports. To help their strength in anaerobic activities we offer supervised weights training.

The policy of the school is that sport is compulsory all year for students in Year 7, Year 8, Year 9, Year 10 and Year 11 and up until the Trial HSC exams in Year 12. Those students who are unable to participate in Saturday sport are to address this in writing with complete details to the Head Teacher-Sport at the beginning of the year.

It is the policy of the school to support GPS sports in the season that they are contested by the members of the Athletic Association of the Great Public Schools.

This means that equipment costs, venue hire, travel to certain venues, particular coaching fees, competition entry fees, charges for referees or umpires, capitation fees and entry fees for knockout competitions, are paid for from school funds. Competition entry fees for representative teams for all sports are paid for from school funds. The school charges parents a global fee and in addition, a sports levy, to cover these costs.

Saturday Sport Absences
During the recent summer season it was noticed that a number of students were absent from sport on Saturdays with no explanation. These led to a number of embarrassing incidents, where teams were left short and apologies were made to the opposing school. For Sydney Boys High School to be recognised as a serious opponent in the AAGPS, then a number of changes have been made to rectify this problem for future Saturday fixtures.

Students and parents are asked to communicate known absences to the Master in Charge (MIC) and to their specific team coach in the week leading up the match. If a student is ill, it is expected the illness will be communicated directly to the coach and Master in Charge (MIC) on the day of the match. Students who do not communicate illnesses or absences will be given a warning ‘Yellow Card’. A further breach in terms of an unexplained absence will mean a red card in which the student will be suspended from the sport for 2 weeks. If a third unexplained absence occurs, then the student will be removed from the sport for the remainder of the season. For a student to receive credit towards their Half Yearly and Yearly Reports, 100% attendance or full communication of absences is expected.

In summary:
First unexplained absence = warning, Yellow Card

Second unexplained absence = Removed from the sport for two weeks, Red Card

Third unexplained absence = removed from the sport for the remainder of the season

MyPlace_MyFace Compeition

Foto Riesel is proud to support the MyPlace_MyFace Photo Competition

MyPlace_MyFace is a joint initiative between Wesley Mission, Australian Centre for Photography, the City of Sydney's Homelessness Unit and Pine Street Creative Arts Centre. With the generous support of Australian Photography Magazine, Crumpler and Foto Riesel.

You are invited to submit a photograph of yourself, friends, family or pet in a place that means something to you, accompanied by a 150 word written submission. Entries open May 3 and close July 12 2010.

Your mum's old lounge. The backyard shed. The best tree in the park. The local cafe. Your cubby house.

MyPlace_MyFace is open to entries from Under 18s and Over 18s in two distinct categories:

• 'Homeless' for those people who are currently homeless, and
• 'Housed' for those people who are currently housed.

A range of great prizes are on offer including classes or private tuition at the Australian Centre for Photography, creative arts course at Pine Street Creative Arts Centre, camera bags from Crumpler and vouchers from Coles.

Winning and highly commended entries will be featured in an exhibition at Pine Street Creative Arts Centre, which will travel to Wesley Mission where the photos will be auctioned to raise money from Wesley Mission Fundraising. Proceeds of sales at the Charity Photo Auction will be split 50/50 between the Photographer and Wesley Mission.
