Sports DonationsGPS sports competition is very demanding on people and resources. At High we have ongoing needs for facilities development, equipment and development through expert coaching. If you would like to help through a tax deductible donation for a particular sport, the appropriate form can be posted to you by calling 9361 6910. LIBRARY BOOK FAIR – “Read first” donations can also be purchased Online from
Borders Website. Both librarians have been entering books suitable for Senior Boys onto the Sydney Boys High Book Fair Website - follow links and click in to view full catalogue on sydneyboyshigh.com website. These books have “Seniors” on the comments and can be searched so they are all together so senior boys do not have to scroll through the 39 pages on this site. This is a great opportunity for Senior Boys to hand pick books for their new library. In doing this they will have a lasting impact on the learning of the boys who follow them on at High. The 2 libraries hope to display all boys books currently on view at Borders Bondi Junction (approx 800 books) on Friday May 28th – the day of the Book Fair. We are very grateful for the polite assistance we have had from Borders while we compiled this list and for Borders agreeing to deliver and pick up all of these books for the display and Borders Online providing a good discount for our parents to purchase. The Mothers' Day pre Book Fair 25% off deal is no longer open. Book Reviews on books you are browsing can be found by double clicking on the book of your choice on the Book Fair selection. The idea of the Book Fair is for every boy to select and donate one book to his library. Each boy will be the first to read his newly covered book. BORDERS SPECIAL CODE NEEDED- The next edition of High Notes and a newsletter home will advertise exactly how to order your Book Fair donation – to get 20% off a code will need to be added to the order. Year 7 Parent Meeting Four Year 7 parents volunteered to be Year Group Reps, so the Year 7 Gmail account is now up and running. Monthly Giving Program The School has short, medium and long term building and grounds projects that are part of the School’s overall plan to provide the best facilities and educational programs it can, to further the School's ethos of the pursuit of all-round excellence. To achieve these goals, the School depends upon its community of parents, Old Boys and supporters for financial support. Planned projects include Stage Two: Library and Multipurpose Centre. We have $800,000 so far allocated to Stage Two. We need to at least double this. The tax deductible Monthly Giving Program helps to fund these building and development goals. An arrangement is in place with ANZ Bank for automatic monthly deductions from a nominated credit card. You can elect to give $50, $40, $30, $20 or $10 each month for a period of twelve months. Your nominated amount, along with name and credit card details are sent to the bank electronically. At the end of the financial year, the school issues an annual statement as evidence of tax deductible donations. You can opt in or out of the scheme by notifying the school in writing five working days before the 15th of each month. If you would like to reacquaint yourself with ways of donating to Sydney Boys High School Building Fund, please refer to the School’s website and download the appropriate donation forms. Thank you for your support of our boys.
Drama NewsA big congratulations must go out to all the students who auditioned for a position in the 2010 Drama Ensemble and Circus Troupe. Everyone had loads of energy and enthusiasm whilst demonstrating such interesting and diverse talents. The two groups have already begun rehearsals for the upcoming Drama Festival and should be commended for their efforts.

Boggabilla Central School Annual VisitBillets are required for three nights from Monday 24 May to Thursday May 27. There will be a mixture of boys and girls varying in ages from 13 to 17. If you are interested please contact Mr Barris. It is easier if you can take two billets as the Boggabilla students are quite shy. Attached is the proposed itinerary and it is expected our students will accompany them on some of the activities. The highlight for our guests is the State of Origin and tickets will be provided so that students can travel to the game and return with them.

From the CanteenWe have a wide range of hot food on offer and limited oven space. While we try hard to second guess what all you boys (and teachers) will want to eat on a given day, it is very hard to get it right without your input. Which is why we want to thank the many boys who have made good use of the lunch order system (order between 8.30 - 9.00 am) Their favourites are there waiting for them at lunch time, reserved, so the boy just ahead of them in line won't get the last one. Have you tried out the hot soup and roast vegetable pasta yet? With the days getting cooler, come and see what else is on offer at canteen!!

appreciated your efforts at a time when it was needed – it’s not just the boys who
can show what High spirit can be!! A message also from the canteen managers to the Prefect body

Wet Weather Information - Saturday SportFor regular updates on Saturday sport during times of inclement weather, parents and students are asked to check the school’s website throughout the day. The information can be found by going to the school’s website at then by clicking on the fixture details under the heading of ‘Upcoming events’ i.e. Saturday, May 8 SHS v SGS and St Augustine’s. Cancellations can then be found by scrolling down the page to the specific sport and team. If there is no information specific to sport cancellations then assume by default that sport will go ahead. Please note that the current ‘Sports Wet Weather line’ is inoperable.
Changes to Sport PolicyStudents and parents should read the changes to the School’s Sport Policy which is detailed on the school’s website and outlined below:
Sport Policy Sydney Boys High is unique among NSW state secondary schools due to its membership since 1906 of the Athletic Association of Great Public Schools, formed in 1892 to order and regulate sporting fixtures for schools with senior students. The other eight members of this Association (commonly called the 'GPS') are private schools. The school expects students to engage in at least one GPS sport per year. This commitment includes Saturday competition. We encourage boys to get involved in aerobic fitness activities (the athletics and cross country programs) to help them in their chosen sports. To help their strength in anaerobic activities we offer supervised weights training. The policy of the school is that sport is compulsory all year for students in Year 7, Year 8, Year 9, Year 10 and Year 11 and for up until the HSC exams in Year 12. Those students who are unable to participate in Saturday sport are to address this in writing with complete details to the Head Teacher-Sport at the beginning of the year. It is the policy of the school to support GPS sports in the season that they are contested by the members of the Athletic Association of the Great Public Schools. This means that equipment costs, venue hire, travel to certain venues, particular coaching fees, competition entry fees, charges for referees or umpires, capitation fees and entry fees for knockout competitions, are paid for from school funds. Competition entry fees for representative teams for all sports are paid for from school funds. The school charges parents a global fee and in addition, a sports levy, to cover these costs. Saturday Sport Absences During the recent summer season it was noticed that a number of students were absent from sport on Saturdays with no explanation. These led to a number of embarrassing incidents, where teams were left short and apologies were made to the opposing school. For Sydney Boys High School to be recognised as a serious opponent in the AAGPS, then a number of changes have been made to rectify this problem for future Saturday fixtures. Students and parents are asked to communicate known absences to the Master in Charge (MIC) and to their specific team coach in the week leading up the match. If a student is ill, it is expected the illness will be communicated directly to the coach and Master in Charge (MIC) on the day of the match. Students who do not communicate illnesses or absences will be given a warning ‘Yellow Card’. A further breach in terms of an unexplained absence will mean a red card in which the student will be suspended from the sport for 2 weeks. If a third unexplained absence occurs, then the student will be removed from the sport for the remainder of the season. For a student to receive credit towards their Half Yearly and Yearly Reports, 100% attendance or full communication of absences is expected.
In summary: Second unexplained absence = Removed from the sport for two weeks, Red Card Third unexplained absence = removed from the sport for the remainder of the season 100% attendance = credit given for participation on Half Yearly/Yearly Reports
High Rugby
SENIOR RUGBY
Each individual senior player can check their Conditioning and Rugby training attendance on spreadsheets soon to be posted on the Senior Rugby Notice Board located in the Canteen Area. A number of Year 10 and Year 11 players will need to improve their attendance to these sessions if they are to be recognised by the school for their efforts.
The following players have been regular with their Conditioning and Rugby training and as a
consequence will trial at the 1st XV level. What is pleasing to see is the consistent logging and enthusiasm most of the Year12 players are bringing to the group as a whole. The following players need to be congratulated for not only being excellent role models with their training regime but also for helping to prepare the rest of the seniors for the challenge ahead. Quite often one of these players will go out of his way to assist a Year 10 or 11 player who may be experiencing difficulty understanding or performing the required skill.
Congratulations must also go to the Senior Rugby Prefects Alex Koerber and George D-Smith who have been reliable, involved and positive about the direction Rugby is taking at SBHS The 1st XV player must consistently complete at least 5 sessions of training a week.
The 2nd XV and 16A player must consistently log 4 sessions of training a week.
Note- Only under special known circumstances can players opt to include an extra strength session to make up for a missed Rugby training session. This does not prevent any players from completing an extra strength training session if they wish to do so. The strength training session must be signed by Mr Tassell in the Senior Rugby logbook and submitted to Mr Scrivener for logging. The Rugby sessions are logged according to your attendance and participation on the following training days.
Monday 3:30 to 5:30pm at Moore Park West Wet weather- Training is always on and senior players are to meet in the gym. Players must submit a signed note from their parent or guardian if unable to attend a training session preferably before the event. A small number of players have indicated they want to play rugby but find it difficult to follow the strict training schedule for a variety of reasons. Unfortunately, the school cannot provide sporting references or student sporting awards to the senior students who have played limited rugby or do not log consistently. Many institutions (eg Sydney University) are now seeking students who not only perform academically but respond strongly to sporting challenges. Please check your logging before you think you should be rewarded for your participation in GPS Rugby.
Senior Coaches
Sydney Boys High School FencingIt was a gruelling 8 ½ hrs at Newington on Saturday with a sizable SBHS contingent making it past the elimination rounds of the U13 and U15 School Championship individuals. Hayden Rabone fought admirably to be placed equal 4th in the U15s. Hayden joined SBHS fencing this year and is a member of the North Sydney Fencing club. Training throughout the year has obvious benefits. Ian Li also had a great day coming in at 14th closely followed by Ashley Chan 19th, and Mathew Chan 24th and Shaun Pak 25th. Mathew and Shaun were both at the French Tour and had missed preparatory training so went into the Competition pretty cold. The U13s performed well and David Huang placed 8th [David also joined SBHS fencing this year and is a North Sydney club member also], Gideon Kwok 20th, Christopher Chen 27th and Chen Yu Wang 28th. Our other U13 fencers didn’t proceed past the elimination poules. This was to be expected since the Year 7 fencers have never experience electric fencing and have only just been introduced to this sport. A big thank you to the parents who came along and supported the fencers, feeding them and cheering them along. We had to be exceptionally patient due to the unprecedented high numbers entering the competition this year. Thank you also to Ian Ho and Albert Nguyen who came to support and mentor the new fencers on a weekend during their exams.
I would also like to thank the parents and boys who assisted Yvette Hauser with parking during
the holidays. An order has been placed for the electric gear we have been wishing for over the
years.

Eastern Suburbs Zone Secondary SchoolsAnnual Athletics Carnival – 2010Dear Parent The Eastern Suburbs Zone Athletics Carnival will be held at ES Marks, Sydney Athletics Field, Anzac Parade, Kensington on Thursday 29th June all day (8.00am – 3.15pm). Your son has been selected to represent Sydney Boys High at this carnival. Senior athletes need only attend for their events (they may go back to school to attend their normal classes). The boys will need shorts (Light Blue or Black) and a High athletics Singlet or a House PE shirt. Athletes will bring their own food on the day and there will be a canteen at the grounds. Theft at carnivals is a common occurrence so please ask you son not to take valuables to this event. Any athlete who finishes first or second in this event will be selected in the zone team to compete at the Sydney East Area Carnival on the 3rd and 4th August. The 'Jaggar Gift'The Race of ChampionsSydney High Athletics, Cross Country and the PD/Health/PE Department are holding the “Jaggar Gift” on Moore Park West. The race will be run as a handicap to give all competitors an equal chance of success. The top ten 1.6km athletes from each Year in the junior school (Years 7, 8 and 9) and the senior school (Years 10, 11 and 12) will be given the opportunity to participate in this race. Year 12 students may self nominate. The junior race will run first, following a 3 minute interval the senior race will commence.. The ‘Jaggar Gift’ will take place on Monday 24th May 2010 on a modified 1.6km course on Moore Park West.
