High Notes, Vol 11 No 11, April 23 2010

From the Principal
Term 2
Welcome back to Term 2. I hope that all staff and students had a relaxing
break. There are some staff changes, particularly while the French Tour is still on. Mr Heath
will cover the music classes until the 28th. Ms Chen is relieving for Ms Ward (who is on extended
jury duty).
High Talent
The NSW CHS Swimming Championships were held in the last week of Term 1.
High won a gold medal in the 4x50m 14 years relay. The team was Eugene Lee, Yu Peng Man, George
Dzero, Dominic Mah. In the 6x50m all age relay, High won a silver medal. The team was Jack
Musgrove, Ben Wilcox, Shaun Pak, Eugene Lee, Leonard Mah and Kazuo Nakamura. Darren Chien won an
individual silver medal in the 100m breaststroke. These boys will go on to represent CHS at All
Schools. A wonderful effort by all of our representative swimmers! Early next month 2009 Old
Boys, Yiming Cao and Thomas Wilson will be receiving their University of Sydney Outstanding
Achievement Awards and Harrison Lane a University of Sydney Entry Award.
A report from a Parisian resident, Old Boy Azri Deen (1995), that the marching band played under
the Arc de Triomphe on 15/4 “to the highest standard and were an equal match to the
professional French military band that they played alongside.” Old Boy Spencer Llewellyn
(2009) was awarded a full scholarship to Pacific College California, a division 1 basketball
college. A wonderful organisational effort by Yale Wong and Andrew Gaffney resulted in 59 High
boys donating blood to the Red Cross. This joint initiative with SGHS was very worthwhile and yet
another example of the laudable values and leadership capacity of our students. Thank you to Mr
Walker for his assistance with the event.
Ground improvements
The COLA has had security fencing installed. Concrete slabs were
laid to extend the cricket run ups and to provide a base for another water tank and a storage
shed for fencing. Drainage was added to the amphitheatre area, a pit dug and a pipe installed to
divert water to the stormwater drain. Turf was laid in the area between the amphitheatre and the
basketball courts to promote growth. A sandstone retaining wall to secure the Macdonald Wing side
of the cricket nets for 25m was constructed using locally sourced sandstone. Students are asked
to keep away from the areas being developed and to respect the taped off areas.
The MySchool Controversy
In the latest ACE publication, Emeritus Professor Alan Reid
debunks six myths about the MySchool website.
- MySchool captures the quality of a school. Even though MySchool admittedly takes a narrow
snapshot of school achievement through NAPLAN results, parents really don’t have time to
pursue other sources of information and will continue to be influenced by MySchool content.
- Publishing school results on MySchool will help to increase quality in education. Teachers
are motivated to improve by other means than parental pressure. International experience shows
that when testing becomes high stakes (particularly in Years 7 & 9) it has deleterious
effects on the quality of education.
- MySchool information will not be used to establish simplistic league tables. The side step
attempt to compare each school to 60 like schools has been confounded by the difficulty of
establishing ‘like’ schools and by the response of the media to publish league tables
anyway.
- That MySchool will help the government to target resources to schools. The NAPLAN data has
been available to governments for years. School improvement is not just about money. Social and
cultural factors are as important as facilities, resources and pedagogy.
- MySchool will help parents to select schools. Promoting the notion of education as a
commodity rather than a public good is unhelpful as it undermines the culture of school as a
community. It also assumes that all people are able to choose. Zoning, Transport costs, fees and
restricted enrolments, mitigate against a large percentage of the population really having
choice.
- If you oppose MySchool you are opposed to transparency and accountability. All responsible
teachers know that good education requires plentiful relevant information.
It is hard to disagree with the clarity and cogency of Professor Reid’s argument. However,
if NAPLAN was acknowledged as a useful professional tool before MySchool is it not just as
meaningful after MySchool? NAPLAN is clearly a pawn in the game. It seems to me that the state
has the determination and capacity to have the tests administered and the teaching profession has
the determination and capacity not to be involved in their administration. The struggle is
costing both sides. I fear the MySchool distraction and the adversarial politics of NAPLAN will
result in fewer dollars and fewer hours of effort being applied to the education of students in
Australia this year.

FIRST EVER SYDNEY BOYS HIGH “READ AND DONATE” BOOK FAIR
The opportunity
is there for boys to directly influence and update our 2 library Fiction Collection. We hope
every boy will choose and then read one book. Work proceeds apace from both librarians and
student volunteers in support of this big 2 Libraries event. The May 28 Book Fair is a great
chance to support your son as lifelong a reader and for a modest sum to support your school
library Fiction Collection. When your son picks a great book to donate to the 2 Libraries he will
be the first one to borrow and read the book. Both Libraries aspire to have a really exciting and
up to date fiction collection as a result of the hard work they are putting into this Book Fair,
to encourage High’s wonderful students to continue to love their reading.
BOOK FAIR WEBSITE UP - see link from sydneyboyshigh.com
Resources which will be
displayed at the May (read and donate the book) Book Fair are going up on a website as we write
and will continue to do so until we have enough resources for every boy to purchase a book.
You can look these up on the linked website and click around and find book reviews and popularity
ratings. Mrs Crothers spent the 2nd week of the holidays and after school this week, selecting
books from Borders at Bondi Junction and putting them on her “Library Thing” website.
Mrs Gordon is selecting books and has put in a day’s research at the Children’s
Bookshop in-service to select resources for the new Senior Book Collection. At present there are
approx 400 books up on the Website and more to go. Students can investigate the books and pick
the best one to read themselves and later donate.
MOTHERS’ DAY OFFER – EARLY BIRD BOOK FAIR
– Starts this coming
week in time for Mothers’ Day
As a special offer to Sydney Boys High
mothers Mrs Crothers has selected 200 of Border’s latest women’s books for boys to
give Mum for Mothers’ Day. These are now on the Book Fair website – follow the link
from sydneyboyshigh.com. This is a 20% off purchase and is NOT a donation. Boys can attach
their own “read and donate” book choice to the Mothers’ Day offer if they wish
– by selecting from the Website right now and filling in the downloadable form and taking
it to the Library staff. Library staff will order the books for free and they will be delivered
to the school for boys to pick up. For notification of arrival see the Library’s
noticeboards.

UNSW Network Schools Programme
UNSW Year 10 Subject Selection and Information Evenings
This year UNSW is offering
six Year 10 Subject Selection and Information Evenings - three of these dates are exclusively for
Network Schools’ students. The evenings exclusively for Network Schools’ students
have been designed to be smaller so that students and parents will have more of an opportunity to
interact one-on-one with current UNSW students and Faculty Representatives. We encourage Year 10
students and their parents to attend these information packed evenings – even if they are
unsure of what uni they want to attend. We pride ourselves on ensuring that the information
provided is broad enough to not be solely applicable to UNSW but best practice for subject
selection.
Presentations from UNSW’s UAC Admissions, the Board of Studies, UNSW Co-op and Scholarships
and a UNSW Student Ambassador are followed by the opportunity for students and parents to meet
directly with current UNSW students and Faculty Representatives to ask any questions they may
have on UNSW’s programs, the study experience, etc. etc.
The dates for all six events, along with the specific registration details for each, are listed
below. These evenings often fill to capacity – please encourage students or parents to
register as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.

presentations from the Medicine Faculty’s Associate Dean (Education); the Medicine
Faculty’s Manager of Academic Programs and the Medicine Student Centre Manager. Following
the formal presentation, a panel of five (including two current UNSW Medicine students) will
answer questions from the audience. There will also be time following the official program for
students to ask questions of other current UNSW medicine students.
There are still a limited number of seats available in the additional venue (connected via two

Letters Re Absence/Lateness/Early Leave
When your son returns to school from being absent he is required to provide a letter of
explanation signed by a parent or guardian. If your son is going to be late for school a note is
also required. Alternatively you may contact the school by phone on 9361 6910 and dial
“4” for the absentee line.
If your son has an early leave note he is required to have his note signed by either Mr Barris,
Mr Dowdell or Mr Prorellis before 8:55 am and handed in to the Main Office immediately
after. Each letter should be signed by a parent or guardian with the name, date and
roll class of your son printed clearly. Your son needs to pick up a leave pass from
the Main Office before he leaves the school.
Leave
If you require leave for your son please, apply in writing and address your application to the
Principal, Dr Jaggar, stating the reason and length of time of the leave. Your son must then
present this application to Dr Jaggar for permission for the leave. Please remember to apply
before the leave and not after.
The Principal must approve all leave applications.

School Athletics Carnival 2010
Over two great days late last term the School Athletics Carnival was held at nearby ES Marks
field. The Carnival is designed to cater for all standards and boys are encouraged to participate
in at least three events on the day. The Carnival went very smoothly thanks to the efforts of
staff, student volunteers and willing competitors. Particular thanks once again to our Data Team
consisting of James Rudd, David Chan, Nicholas Costa, Brendan Leo and Wen Jia Liu who donated
their skill and computer expertise over two days. Our Carnival is now one of only a few large
school Carnivals held at the track and it continues to be a great spectacle when it is in full
swing. Senior boys in particular seem to appreciate what, for most of them, will be the last such
event they participate in. Our new Deputy Principal, Mr Barris, started a new initiative this
year with the first Tug O War contest. This helped to create a fun atmosphere at the carnival and
we will develop the concept further next year.
Congratulations also to the Age Champions – James Tinker (12 Years), Joshua Lee (13
Years), Anton Brokman (14 Years), Patrick Krakovsky (15 Years) and Scott Renzenbrink (16 Years)
Special Awards from the Carnival include ….
The AM Eedy Cup for 100m Champion : Brian Kelly
The McArthur Memorial Cup for 1500m : Francis Torok
The Frank Albert Cup for Senior Athletics Champion : Maximillian Kite

collected in the Boys School Car Park and girls in the Girls School so as to reduce congestion.
Please do not allow them to make their own way home at this time of night.
Students need to be fully aware of the expectations we have for them regarding acceptable
behaviour. Should any incident occur parents will be contacted to collect their child. The NSW
Department of Education Guidelines are the framework for conduct of this, and all other social
events.
Please contact Mr Thomsen (Sydney Girls High School) or Mr Barris (Sydney Boys High School) if
you need clarification. We look forward to a successful evening.
Best wishes,
