High Notes, Vol 10 No 9, March 27 2009

From the Principal
High Talent
High had an historic basketball season in 2008-09 finishing equal 3rd in first grade and second
in second grade. The preparation, commitment and self belief of both teams were evident all
season. Thank you to Alex Hayman for his efforts with first grade. A young High first XI finished
the season strongly in equal 3rd place. Thank you to Barry Davison for his efforts with the team.
Congratulations to the 20 High boys who made the Sydney Zone East Swimming Team. Dedicated
swimmers can do well at this level. Well done to Alexander Belokopytov and Jack Wachsmann of Year
12 for their last representative year in swimming. As usual in volleyball, Sydney High players
dominated Sydney East Region team selection with 9 of 10 selected! Thank you to all 19 Try Rugby
day helpers who facilitated a great experience for Year 7 boys last Friday. Thanks also to Geoff
Andrews and Catherine Deacon for their invaluable help. Well done indeed to Frank Zhang (Year 8)
who was selected in the Combined GPS Tennis team as reserve – a great effort! A special
mention goes to the 13A cricket team who have improved with every match and fell just 5 runs
short of defeating the unbeaten King’s side on the weekend. Well done indeed!
Behaviour at GPS games
After last week’s incidents in our home games against Grammar, I want to remind players,
coaches and parents that at High we pride ourselves on holding the high moral ground when it
comes to crowd behaviour at GPS fixtures. We do not resort to sledging and racist taunts. We
respect officials and abide by their rulings. I ask that when High plays at our gym no spectators
remain on the floor area but go upstairs to the viewing gallery and not congregate next to court
2 or along the court 1 side lines. For reasons of safety and removal of courtside distractions,
it is preferable for all spectators to be in the gallery. Healthy barracking for the positives in
the games is always welcome. High believes in and abides by the GPS Code of Conduct.
Finances to March
Since December 1 last year when our financial year started, income from all sources (including
carried forward funds) was $1,313,383. A large proportion of these funds came from general
service contributions ($443,235). A very pleasing 85% of budget has been contributed already by
Year 8 parents. Year 10 parents are close behind on 77%. Senior school payments are
disappointing. It would be terrific if parents in Years 9, 11 and 12 could pay their fees soon.
I am pleased that 605 families have already supported the sports program through their
‘Sports Levy’. Also, 575 families recognised the need for increased technology
support in the school and paid the ‘technology levy’ I trust that these families will
not be expected to carry the financial burden of supplying high quality services to
everybody’s sons. We are entering a new era in technology in teaching and learning and we
need all your support.
High’s expenditures to March 10 were $817,783, including $92,706 on capital equipment
items. The best part of this spending is that all your sons get the benefit of what we have done
already for the rest of the year.
On the down side, we have only $453,548 left until Term 3 when our second DET payment comes.
Please support us by contributing now!
The money will be spent on: Social Science textbooks ($10k), the digital projector installation
program ($15k), the 4th Tennis Court Loan instalment ($10k) and the Solar Grant installation top
up ($10k.) Support the School Canteen that finances so many good school projects!
Annual School Report published
All High families should have received their Annual School Reports this week. A PDF version of
the report is on the school’s website. I want to thank Lynne Williams and Jenni May for
their input into the project. If your son did not bring home a copy, please email or telephone
the school. We have a strictly limited print run of 1300 copies, so there are few replacement
copies available.
National Schools Pride Nominations
Refurbishing the Great Hall kitchen was one of 12,752 projects nominated by 2,186 schools by
March 16. DET is ‘assessing’ these nominations prior to “forwarding funding
applications to the Commonwealth”. The Commonwealth will decide and advise which projects
have been approved. DET will contact schools and publish the full list on the internet.
Summer Sports Reports
Summer sports reports are now due. If you were the captain of a team or stroked a crew, it is
your job to write up a season report of no more than 100 words, capturing the highlights of the
season from your perspective, mentioning positives and being optimistic. Your Clearance Form for
the first semester reports will have this responsibility written on it if you have not supplied
your report to Ms Trompetter or her Record Committee colleagues. Leaders in co-curricular
activities should be making notes of Term 1 events to be prepared for their reports due at the
conclusion of their activity. Coaches and teachers – please submit the names of captains
and leaders to the Record Committee so that the collection of season reports can be
managed.
Dr K A Jaggar
From History
The battle of Anzac needed reliable cover-fire and brave machine-gunners. Trooper Thomas
Andrew was assigned to such a unit. This would have been essential. These weapons were a major
threat to any opposition. There was also hand-to-hand combat occurring during this assault. Using
the primary and secondary sources, can I find out; HOW Trooper Thomas Andrew died?
Here is the story of a young man from SA who enlisted during the Great War and who never came
home. Here is a story which was duplicated many hundreds of times over, for many men and their
families during this time in Australia’s history. He was a son to Mary Andrew and a brother
to Robert Andrew. He was more than just number 76. After his death, his brother wrote to the
defence department making enquiries about the information concerning his death. He was a
decorated soldier. Here is a story about a time in history which was - as one man put it
“the absurd sacrifice of young men by old men sitting in stuffed chairs in London”.
This was allegedly a comment made by a soldier at Gallipoli.
In the spring of 1914, October 12, a young Thomas Andrew of Goodwood South Australia enlisted for
the Australian Imperial Forces. He was at the time, as it appears on his enlistment form No D
19533, only 21 7/12 years of age and was employed as a farm hand. The 7th Light Horse Regiment
was put together at Holsworthy in Liverpool NSW. The men were volunteers and over October and
November they were assembled and appointed to units for despatch, as part of the 2nd Australian
Light Horse Brigade. Thomas was to join the Machine Gun Section; a post handed down by his
commanding officer, Lieutenant Colonel J.M. Arnott, on December 1st 1914. Our soldier; Private
Trooper Thomas Andrew embarked the Ayreshire - transport A33 on December 20, 1914 bound for
Gallipoli with his unit. A list of the 27 unit members accompanies this account. On the
Unit’s arrival on 1st February of 1915, they were a dismounted force (on foot) and did not
disembark to feel the solid ground beneath their feet, until the 19th February. .
From this time forward, they were fully engaged in the fighting and on examination of the unit
diary notes obtained via the Australian War Memorial website, not only was the safety of the men a
paramount concern to their immediate officers, so too were the daily behaviours of the unit. At all
times, proper conduct, hygiene and safety seemed to be the ultimate priorities. I don’t think
there is anything that one can do to boost the human-spirit at a time of conflict like war. The
diary notes place our Trooper Thomas in the conflict having been transferred by means of a
“Routine Order NO. 28” to the “M.G. Sec.” on 23rd June 1915 along with 3
other men. This document is attached for examination.
The evidence and history places our subject Andrew at Gaba Tepe and Anzac Cove from May 21 1915,
as reported by unit diaries of the day. 24 June 1915 a routine order entry, cites Tom as a
transfer from B-Squadron to Machine Gun Section. We know by his death notice that he is killed in
action at Anzac on the 6th August 1915. Our Trooper Thomas Andrew had been transferred to Machine
Gun Section, in the earlier order dated 24th June. On the 6th of August 1915, a
“secret” operations order was issued by Lieut-Col Arnott at Shell Green. The order
set out that the 7th LHR would provide cover fire, to Pine Ridge, from the trench positions they
occupied during this attack; in fact, they are specifically expected to watch for any movement in
the communications of the enemy. By doing this, they would cripple their enemy’s ability to
respond to any attack. The Machine Gun Section, with whom our soldier was serving, would have
been an important and a likely, “front-line” component during the attack from the
trenches.
Page 19, Copy Number 2, of Operation Order Number 6 states, “An attack assisted by naval
artillery fire is to be made on the enemy works, known as Green Knoll and Balkan Gun Pits, on
Harris Ridge on the night of 6-7th August”.
The secondary sources suggest a great loss of men due to gruesome hand-to-hand combat that
occurred during this diversionary conflict. Once the Turks had realised the Anzac’s
objectives, they began to pick off their communications runners. It is highly likely that our
soldier fell at some time during this fight. Otherwise, he may have been killed or fatally
wounded in hand-to-hand combat, while defending his post. It is sad that the research and
examinations of the Unit Diaries, don’t mention the cause or location of the death of
Trooper Thomas. However, we do know how his unit coped with this struggle, during the conflict,
and after his death. The Unit Diaries on the 8th of August tells us of the status and condition
of the unit, in the aftermath of the fighting. The unit’s morale has dropped as the days
persist, and dysentery is affecting the soldiers. This combined with extremely hot temperatures
and malnutrition, is compounding their predicament.
In 1893, Goodwood SA, Thomas Andrew was born. He attended a state school, trained in Commercial
Farming and Engineering and enlisted for the Australian Imperial Forces on the 12th of October
1914. He was 5 ft 8, with dark skin, blue eyes, and brown hair. He fought for us since his
landing, until the defensive action at Anzac Cove, where he fell in action. He sacrificed his
future, for ours.

SBHS Debating
Eastside Competition Round 5, Friday 27th March
Last week our boys suffered terribly at the hands of SGHS where we lost all debates with the
exception of Year 11. Well done boys! We can take pride in that all debates were close and the
round should prove an excellent learning experience for our boys moving into the final rounds of
the Eastside comp.
This week we are debating against SCEGGS for our last home debates for the Eastside competition.
The Eastside topic for this week is Current Affairs.
Chair people are required for the Senior debates which start at 8pm. If you are interested in
taking this role please email me at

. As always watching senior and more
experienced debaters is a great way to see the structure and matter knowledge of our top
representative debaters and an enjoyable learning experience
FED Competition Round 3, Friday 27th March
This week our FED teams are away again – this time at Knox. The topic area for this
round is Health. Last week our Juniors and Seniors led the way with Years 7, 8, 11 and 12
winning their respective debates against Newington – champion effort boys and I look
forward to excellent results again for this week.
Debating Squirrel says – The Semis and Finals are coming!
Remember to keep an eye on newspapers and other news sources to stay up to date with the current
issues they arise. Not only will this provide you with additional matter for any topic area but
could even provide you with a specific debate topic for a current round and into the final series
for your competition. Challenge yourself by playing ‘Devil’s Advocate’, put
yourself in different shoes – what would the Federal Government think? What would the State
Government think? What is the best way to solve the problem? Keeping your mind open and creating
your own solution to problems is an excellent skill of top debaters.
More information can be found at and will be emailed to you
on a weekly basis. Please CHECK YOUR EMAIL regularly and ensure we have current contact details
for both students and parents. PARENTS: If you are not receiving weekly emails about debating

SHS Rowing Committee
Rowing Dinner
We had nearly 200 people attend the School Rowing Dinner last Wednesday evening in the Great Hall
and I would think that everyone there would have been impressed with our rowers. The speeches
were outstanding by Daniel Keogh (Y8), Max Jones (Y9), Tim Gollan (Y10) and Matt Ling (Y12 and
Captain of Boats) and there was something very special about seeing our boys formally introduced
onto the stage- in their crews, in full school uniform and standing proud! It was a very
enjoyable night.
Riverview Gold Cup Results
Our star crew last Saturday was the Year 9 3rd Coxed Quad Scull coming 2nd in the B final to
Grammar. Well done rowers – Sam Marques, Hiram Yu, David Andrews, Tony Chen and (c) Shaun
Fletcher.
Rowing Assembly Friday 27th March 11.30am
The GPS Head of the River crews will be formally introduced to the School assembly. Parents of
those boys are invited to attend the assembly followed by morning tea.
GPS Head of the River Saturday 28th March
Races start at 10.00am with the Year 10 Eights, our School Fours race from 10.40am until 11.20am,
and the School Eights race at 11.35 and 11.50 am. It is all over by 12 noon. This is the big day
on the GPS school calendar and is quite a spectacle with all GPS schools attending. We have our
own decorated marquee with the School Stage Band playing, so put on the blue and brown and come
and cheer!
All parents are invited back to the sheds for a presentation at approximately 3.00pm to thank
everyone involved in the season – coaches, staff, committee, parents and the boys.
Con’s 25 years as MIC of Rowing celebration
The committee is hosting a cocktail party on Saturday 28th March, 6.00pm – 9.00pm for all
involved with High Rowing from 1985 to 2009 to celebrate the achievement of Mr Con Barris as
Master in Charge for 25 years. It is $25 pp and you can pay at the door.
Sheds Clean Up Sunday 29th March 10am – 12pm
The parents and the boys are
responsible for leaving the Outterside Centre clean at the end of the rowing season ready for
group hiring during the off season.
Mr Barris is asking all boys to turn up on Sunday morning to clean the boatshed and the weights
room and the committee are asking for parents to come and help clean the kitchen, the dormitory,
the Jim Budge room and upstairs. We would appreciate everyone making the effort to help please.
Thanks and good luck to all our rowers at the HOR

both in the 16s and Opens. It is evident from the previous page, the performance was magnificent
and also a massive improvement from last time. This term, High Basketball has become incredibly
stronger and is continuing to do so and hopefully we can maintain this for the next season. The
Hayman Cup Results will be announced next week, in the final edition of Shootin’ Hoops for
this term and season, so stay tuned!

AAGPS 2nd Grade Table
2nd Grade narrowly missed out on taking out the long-awaited
premiership and becoming co-premiers with St. Ignatius. Under the guidance of Mr Hayman, they won
11 games and lost only 3, gave their 100% effort and should definitely be congratulated for such
an outstanding season. 1st Grade finished equal 3rd with Scots, behind 1st place Newington and
2nd place St Ignatius.

SHS Cricket
What a finish to the season, the 1st XI in equal third spot in the Senior Premiership, three
senior players in Avindu VITHANAGE, Brian KELLY and Ishman BARI recorded centuries, from our
junior ranks Thilan SUBASINGHE (14As) also put 104 on the scoresheet and finally batsmen across
the teams scoring 50s in some very close games. Statistics do not really tell the full story on
the performances of teams and on synthetic wickets High have been involved in 27 matches where
there have been less than 20 runs in the result. However the statistics tell a different story
when our teams are exposed to turf wickets at GPS schools who have the advantages of regular
training and playing on turf wickets. However from the statistics we have also seen the emergence
of potential senior XI cricketers from our New Year 7 boys through the intermediate teams in
Years 9 and 10. An exciting two seasons to look forward to.
20266 VISITORS TO OUR CRICKET WEBSITE
The boys as well as interested parties have certainly utilized our Website and I’m pleased
to say that I have answered a minimum of enquiries re ground locations, match times and how to
get there questions this season. We can but hope that we achieve 100% of the information you need
for next season. Parents are also encouraged to read the match reports submitted by the team
captains.
CRICKET DINNER and PRESENTATION OF AWARDS
Friday 3rd April 6-30pm for 7-00pm The Cricket Dinner will be held in the Great Hall and players
are urged to purchase their tickets no later than Monday 30th March when we have to have final
catering numbers to the pavilion. Payment is made at the school office. Boys are reminded that
School Uniform is required.
RETURN of CRICKET KITS – CRICKET BALLS
All kits must be returned to the school prior to the cricket dinner. Used Match balls are to be
placed in the kits and each should have a minimum of 10 cricket balls. New Match balls are to be
retuned to me by the team captains. Some equipment can be accepted PRIOR to the Dinner but before
6-00pm.

SHS Tennis Report
21 March 2009
First Grade had its last match for the season against the top-ranked King’s team.
For all but two of our players, this was the last time they would wear the first grade tennis
shirt. Thus there was a lot to play for. This was clear from the manner in which the first
doubles was contested, with High losing each set by a mere break of serve. The second and third
doubles were more decisive in favour of Kings, whose strength was the quality of their
lower-order players.
The singles matches were lopsided for the large part even though King’s were missing their
number one player. The only match of note was the second singles, in which High was represented
by Frank Zhang. After a slow start, Frank came back in the second to win it 7-5 before opening up
a 5-2 lead in the third, including a double break of serve, by attacking his opponent’s
backhand. Unfortunately, he was not able to put the match away but showed tremendous
sportsmanship in the circumstances. It should be noted that often the best players are not
defined by how they win, but how they lose.
The 12-0 result was an indication of the distance between the first and last teams in the GPS.
For High to return to its former glory days, students need to be more committed to training and
learning the craft. This is the only way we will develop the team of six necessary to compete at
the highest level. One player whose commitment cannot be questioned is Frank Zhang, who has been
rewarded for a fine season with selection in the Combined GPS team
13As
On Saturday the 21st of March the 13s A team stormed into the matches against The King's School.
We all played magnificently and there has been obvious improvement seen in all the players in the
A team. The Julian Tang/Joseph Lui doubles game was played with lots of power coming from both
players despite the unfortunate loss. The Andrew Tayeh/Jet Lee doubles was also played with lots
of effort and skill but they were unfortunately unable to gain a victory over their tough
opponents.
In the singles Joseph Lui lost to his extremely skilled opponent. The games were extremely close
with a few deuces in the game but he unfortunately lost because he was not at the top of his game
this week. Andrew Tayeh played magnificently against his opponent but was not able to overcome
his opponent. Julian's ferocity and power in the match made it quite exciting but the player from
King's defeated Julian in a very tight match. Jet's match was amazing because he dominated the
court, hit great shots, kept on leading in the match and with his strength and will, he won the
match with flying colours.

On Saturday 21st March 2009, Sydney Boys High played an away game against The King’s School
in thrilling tennis matches. First up were the ‘doubles’ for both B teams and both
were won ‘on a life-line’. Although some shots were quite lucky, the strokes were
excellent from both King’s and Sydney Boys and ended up being a close tie-break for both
teams. Both teams managed to pull off some spectacular shots in the ‘dying’ minutes
of the games to turn the tables and win the game.
As for the ‘singles’ though, things were quite different. Shots were only of slightly
lesser quality and the same with the serves. Despite this, not one of the four matches played by
Sydney Boys was won possibly because the sun was at its highest when the singles matches were
played. Overall, the B team played excellent matches this week against one of the best schools
that play tennis.

On Saturday when I got to the King’s school it was raining, so all the boys in the Ds team
and I went up to the shelter near the top half of the tennis courts and started playing handball.
After 1 1/2 hours I decided to call John (our coach) because we thought he wasn't here yet.
Unfortunately, we found out that John was here the whole time but he was near the bottom courts.
Sadly it wasn't our day my partner (David) and I lost both our doubles and singles and we also
had extra pressure because two of our teammates failed to show up

A B and C teams watch out! In what must have been a highlight on the final tennis day of the
season, the D team of William, Brian and Michaelx2 were “DoggeDly DetemineD”. From
the relatively easy win of 6-2 (I think this was the best score) to the nerve-wrecking,
never-say-die win of 12-10 in the tiebreaker where both players could barely walk off the court,
everyone gave of their best. To take nothing away from the King’s team who also displayed
great sport and sportsmanship, we truly embodied "you can't buy spirit"

Sun-Safe Policy
Last week’s P & C meeting addressed several critical school issues, including the
endorsement of the School’s sun-safe policies which include the wearing of hats and
sunscreen during outdoor sport, PE and excursions. The P & C voted to support the School in
the enforcing of this policy.
School Library Fund Contributions
At its May General Meeting, the P & C will vote on recommending to the School that the
Library Fund contribution invoiced to parents at the start of the year, be increased to $125.00
from 2010. With the establishment of the Senior Library in 2009, in addition to the existing
Junior Library, the cost of delivery of School library services has doubled to over $100 000 per
year. A formal motion to increase the Library Fund contribution will be notified to the School
community at the start of Term II.
Both Senior and Junior Libraries are in full operation and our students are using both Libraries
to great effect - optimising their use of supervised study spaces with professional teaching
support, available before school and throughout the school day. It is like having an in-house
tutoring service. Individual hours of study have already been boosted across the majority of
senior students.
The Library Fund finances most of the costs to operate and stock both Libraries, including
subscriptions to the latest in data bases and search engines. The School is relying on parents to
pay their 2009 Library Fund contribution promptly. In past years, only 65% of families have met
their Library fund commitments. As a School community we need to increase this percentage. We are
aiming for 100%. We urge school families to pay the $75.00 School Library Fund contribution for
2009 to the School office, if they have not already done so.

SRC Training Day
On Monday the 2nd March, the newly elected SRC for 2009 took part in an SRC training day and were
the first group who had a whole day devoted specifically to SRC leadership training. The event
was held at the SBHS Outterside Centre.
The day was organised by Mrs Collignon, Mr Coan and Mr Walker and hosted by two members of a
group named Rising Generations. The main goals for the day were to get to know everyone else in
the SRC, create a vision for the SRC for 2009, gain a sense of group unity and cohesion and to
learn effective ways of putting all our ideas into practice.
The day started with the group meeting at 8am at Circular Quay and travelling by ferry down the
Parramatta River to Abbotsford to the centre. It was a beautiful morning and a great way to start
the day together.
The SRC was also joined by the leaders of the Community Service Committee (organised by Ms Kaye)
David Nam, Panduka Manamperi, Johnny Lieu and Kerrod MacPherson to be inspired and to bring some
of the leadership ideas back to their group of student leaders at Sydney High.
At 9am, at the Outterside Centre the group was introduced to our hosts for the day, two fun and
lively members of the Rising Generations team. Throughout the day, the hosts worked on developing
a vision for the SRC through interactive activities. Every member contributed ideas on how they
could improve the school and how these improvements could be achieved.
One of the activities involved a simple objective of placing tennis balls and one blue ping pong
ball in a bucket; a team of seven people, six blindfolded and one leader, tried to coordinate
them to complete the activity. There were three scenarios, the first where all members were
blindfolded and were not allowed to communicate, the second was where the leader was the only
person not blindfolded however was still unable to communicate, the third was where the leader
and his team were not blindfolded and allowed to communicate. The activity showed us the
importance of communication, vision and cooperation as a leader.
The day concluded at 3pm and we all agreed it was great fun however most importantly the SRC
became a closer and stronger unit and were able to develop an understanding on how to become
better leaders.
We would like to thank Mrs Collignon, Mr Coan and Mr Walker for the wonderful day.
SRC Executive 2009 Dale Chen, Nelson Wang and Anirban Ghose.
