be through the KJ Andrews Library but the Senior Library will be getting study guides, journals,
newspapers and other resources suitable for senior students. Public SpeakingThe Rostrum Voice of Youth Competition begins in March and is an opportunity for students to develop their oratory skills through delivering prepared and impromptu speeches. The first round takes place at a variety of venues and we wish the junior and senior boys the best of luck.
Year 7 and 8 students should also watch out for the Junior Oratory Competition which will begin
over the next couple of weeks. This in an internal lunchtime competition which gives the boys an

You Think Youth Forum 2009 The convention consisted of two core sections, Violence and Safety and Contributing to our Democracy. Live video streaming occurred all over Australia, as the event was held nation-wide over locations such as Cairns, Brisbane, Darwin, Alice Springs, Perth, Adelaide, Hobart, Melbourne, Sydney, Canberra. Concerned youths all over the nation discussed hypothetical situations and solutions to such topics, where all ideas were welcomed and recorded formally. Special guests made appearances at this spectacular, one-of-a-kind event, including:
It was a unique experience overall, as the actual meeting was held inside the cinema at Fox studios, with live broadcasts screened on the projector screen. Strangely enough, light refreshments such as a drink and popcorn were provided, only further enhancing the feelings of going to see a movie. Maybe this was reflective of the new concepts and theories placed in our minds, just like expected consequences from seeing a deep and mentally-stimulating film? doesn’t knock, build a door.” SRC Election Results 2009Each year the student body of Sydney Boys High School are given the opportunity to apply to an important leadership position on the school Student Representative Council. Applications involve students vowing that they will commit to the position and work hard throughout the year to represent their peers. Names of applicants from each year are submitted to an online voting site on the SBHS SRC website. Voting is preferential and not compulsory. As a result, six students are elected each year to represent their peer/year group. These students are required to join committees on the council and attend regular Friday lunchtime meetings. If students fulfil their role satisfactorily with the committees they are part of throughout the year, they are honoured with a badge and may purchase an SRC tie. In the first meeting of the new SRC, the new council elect an executive (President, Vice President and Secretary) to run the meetings and give direction. This year, with the help of Mr Walker (Head of Welfare), Mr Coan (Leadership Co-ordinator) and Mrs Collignon (SRC teacher facilitator), the elected SRC of 2009 will be part of a training day held at the Outterside centre March 2nd and lead by a group named Rising Generations. The SRC gives students the opportunity to learn about group work, running meetings, working on committees, responsibility, commitment and leadership. SRC members get the opportunity to go to regional and state SRC meetings as well as a range of leadership development and motivational seminars. It is a council voted in by the students, run by the students for the students of Sydney Boys High. Mrs Collignon, Teacher facilitator, works along side the SRC to help with elections, excursions, meetings and getting ideas off the ground.

This was the speech given last Friday at both the junior and senior assemblies by the ongoing President of 2008, David Nam: “Good morning staff, parents and fellow students, this morning I would like to introduce to the new SRC for 2009. "Thanks to the invaluable computer skills of Mr. James Rudd and the enthusiasm shown by all students in the electronic voting polls, the SRC of 2009 has been elected without a hitch and as expected, everyone elected in both junior and senior years are capable and strong men. But as the SRC once again looks toward the future, its hard not reflect on the past and just what the SRC means to me personally. "The Student Representative Council is more then just a council. Some may think we are simply a meeting each Friday in room 707. But to me, being an SRC member is a network that lasts all year long, every day of the week. It’s a high-five in the corridors; it’s a joke in class or help with an upcoming exam. It’s not just a council, the SRC is a brotherhood! "The SRC is brotherhood of men united by the same goal and that goal is simple, to help the school that helped us first. Sydney Boys High School is not an ordinary school. An ordinary school will give you an education, but Sydney High gives you values, the core, noble values of manhood that builds persistence, strength and character. Sydney Boys High encourages us to tackle our flaws and failures, not by lamenting on what we did wrong, but working together to work out how to improve next time. Performance Program All year 7 students should by now have sorted out the instrument they wish to learn, the tutor for that instrument, and have lessons for Term 1 organised. If you are loaning an instrument from the school, please collect an Instrumental Loan form from the Music Staff. All Instrumental Loan forms need to be returned ASAP. If you have any requests or queries about the Performance Program, please do not hesitate to contact the Music staff.
Music Tour 2010 to France We have had a good response so far, but still need more students to fill all the positions. This will be a magnificent opportunity for all our musicians to perform in some of the most important ceremonies and venues for Anzac day in Europe. Expressions of Interest Forms are available outside the Music Staffroom and need to be completed and returned to the Music Staff by Monday 2nd March 2009 as final numbers need to be given to the organisers. Please speak to the Music Staff for further information.
Year 7 Parent Welcome
Music Supporters Group (MSG) Meeting The SBHS Music Supporters Group assists the Music Department with financial and practical support to help enable them to offer this program. The group also assists in organising the showcase concerts throughout the year, including the Cabaret Night – an evening of Jazz and dancing and the Annual Music Camp. We also provide barbeques for the boys at some music events through the year. Being a SBHS Music Supporter does not require a huge commitment of your time. The group meets prior to musical events, usually on a Monday evening in the Staff Common Room. Discussion is usually focused on instrumental requirements, fundraising and planning for upcoming performance events. You may have experience or contacts to help our fundraising for the music program or you may just like to attend to learn more about your son’s performance music experience at SBHS. As a supporter you may volunteer your time once or twice during the year to assist with our fundraising parking, help on a barbeques or assist at a performance event. Please note some important changes to the Ensemble Rehearsal schedule for 2009.
Marching Band rehearsal is held on Tuesday afternoons from 3.30 – 4.30pm (Basketball Courts) and Friday mornings from 8.00 – 9.00am (Moore Park West) for all concert band members in Term 1 and Term 4. Extra rehearsals are held in the holidays leading up to ANZAC Day. All students in the Intermediate and Senior Concert bands are expected to participate in Marching Band and attend the ANZAC Day March.

English ReportAn important focus of our English program is to encourage the boys to read for enjoyment, to read often and to read widely. Apart from the positive effect this will undoubtedly have on literacy skills, reading widely enriches our understanding of the world we live in. Here in English we see ourselves as a community of readers. On a daily basis we share ideas and opinions about books we are reading and our students reap the rewards of this on-going conversation. ‘Reading Torque’, an initiative we introduced in High Notes in 2007, is a further means of promoting the value of reading and extending our reading community. ‘Reading Torque’ is a vehicle for us to share our thoughts about books we have recently read and so with this in mind….parents, students and staff are invited to express their opinion by putting pen to paper in a short review. However, film and televsion and print journalism are all important too, and should form part of every student’s regular experience beyond the classroom. Through consuming television and films, and reading newspapers and magazines students develop their understanding of how these texts work and further their understanding of values and attitudes and conventions approriate to these forms. A recent Dr Who episode was an outstanding example of the shift from Gothic to SF and an excellent primer for Year 11 Extension genre. Be selective, but look around. Students need to have a deep and a broad experience of the sorts of texts they will ultimately be expected to analyse under exam conditions, and to use as pieces of Other Related Material in Years 11 and 12. Competitions…A reminder to all students to get their entries for the following writing competitions – The Whitlam Institute What Matters Writing competition, closing date 1 April 2009, The Sydney Writers’ Festival and the SMH Writenow Competition, closing date 9th April 2009. Terrific prizes can be won for both competitions. Year 7 has recently returned from their first Camp, and to capitalise on the rich experiences they had here, 7M wrote some amazing HAIKUs. Haiku is a poetic form that originated in Japan, and which seeks to capture a single moment in a very economical way. The first line must be five syllables, the second seven, and the third five again. It’s like a sort of poetic snapshot. Here are some of the poetic snapshots 7M took up at Narrabeen.

CANBERRA ACTIVITY We provided uniformed support for the ceremonies, held on the forecourt of Parliament House with a senior government minister, politicians, business leaders and philanthropists, among other VIPs. We also performed the sausage sizzle cooking duties after the formal proceedings. Following the working part of the day we toured Parliament House and watched the parliamentarians at work. On the Friday we visited the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA). SBHS Old Boy, Major Ross Cable, OC 1 B Squadron at ADFA, was our host as we toured the Academy’s facilities and learned more of this unique path to academic achievement. After a barbecue lunch in one of Canberra’s great parks, we were taken on a guided tour of the Post 1945 Conflict Gallery of the Australian War Memorial. Our trip to Canberra, including our stay at HMAS Harman – Canberra’s navy base – (good food, good accommodation) was a great success. With no cost to the School and the boys, activities such as this highlight the advantages of army cadet service.

Fitness Assessment February 2009
The PDHPE Department has again assessed the physical fitness levels of our students, Years 7 – 10. The most important health-related test is the 1.6km run for cardiovascular endurance. Our standard Moore Park West course was used for the assessment.
An assessment of 90% or better required a student to run the 1.6km in a time of 6 mins 30 secs, approximately, depending on the age of the student. An assessment of 50% or better, required a time of between 7 and 8 minutes, depending on age. A result of 10% or less means the 1.6km run was completed in a time greater than 9 mins 30 seconds. Each student in Years 7 – 9 should have a copy of their assessment schedule and results for February 2009 in their PDHPE theory books. Parents are encouraged to review their son’s results with them.

Rowing News
Last weekend our 1st VIII did not race due to sickness but our 2nd VIII
had an improved showing at SIRC. The 1st IV of Thomas Peters, Max Kite, James Eriksson, Alex
Lazarou and Hayden Schilling performed strongly in their race against other 1st IVs. The
remaining IVs continued practising on the Parramatta in preparation for the Sydney High Regatta
this weekend. The best performance from the junior shed was from the Year 8 quad of Edwin Li,
Dominic Tran, Jonathan Clements-Lendrum, Daniel Keogh, and Daniel Tam. This weekend is the first
full regatta on the Hen & chicken Course so all schools will have their full complement of
rowers present. Next week after the Scots Regatta we will be naming the new Double scull in
honour of Ollie Wilson and the recently donated scull from Ausrowtec in honour of Ross Bowey.

Year 10 Rowing Melbourne Trip Report 2009
On the 10th of February the annual year 10
Melbourne trip commenced with a 4 hour drive to Gundagai. We stayed in the Gundagai motel
overnight and experimented with the strength of 2 phonebooks. We awoke in the morning and
prepared ourselves for the rest of the journey to Melbourne. Stops every few hours kept our
sanity intact until we reached our destination a mere 8 hours since hitting the road. We arrived
at the ‘Power House’ at around 2:30 and were greeted by the familiar faces of our
billets.
Within an hour we had rigged our boats and we were ready for our first training row on the Yarra. Mr Barris rode alongside the river and became the tour guide of the trip, pointing out major landmarks as we rowed past them. Solid improvements were made during this row especially on gaining control of our boat. The session ended and we headed home with our billets.
After a full night’s sleep we arrived at the boatsheds bright and early and once again trained in our eights, making solid improvements along the way. At around 9:30 we got off the water and began to prepare for the first competitive part of the trip. The quad consisted of Anthony Chung, Ryan Caetano, William Stefanidis, myself and Jonah Petrie. We paddled up to the start, aware that the last time we had rowed in quads was when we raced Melbourne last year. We were able to put that behind us and we won both races convincingly. However, the best part of that session was not the races but the control we were able to apply to our boat whilst rowing back to the Power House.
After lunch we headed out once again onto the Yarra this time to race the gruelling 4km course to the Princess Bridge. Another dominant performance from the 1st eight ensured another victory and a strong performance from the 2nd eight gave a clean sweep to Sydney. After another successful day of rowing on the Yarra we headed home with our billets to rest up for the next days races. On Friday morning we started at 8:30 which came as a pleasant surprise to the exhausted High boys. We arrived with a determination to show Melbourne what we were made of in the shortened 8-man races. The two kilometre race began with the High 2nd 8 and the Melbourne 8 being given a 20 second start on the High 1st Year ten. This handicap proved too much for the 1sts losing by a little over a length. However, in the 1km races both of the High 8s dominated and were able to come off with substantial wins. That afternoon we de-rigged and headed off into the city to explore with our billets. We met up back at Melbourne High for a BBQ and then went home with our billets finishing a very enjoyable evening. The next morning we farewelled our billet, loaded into the bus and began the trip back to Sydney.
I would like to thank everyone involved in this trip, namely Mr Barris and Mr Morgan for driving
the bus, Mr Wilson for driving the trailer and Andrew Pham, James Mackay and David Vien for
coaching us during the rows. Without each of you this trip would not be possible.

Chinese New Year Dinner
The Chinese New Year Dinner held last Saturday evening was a huge success with a breathtaking lion dance performance to start the event followed by a Chinese Drum m Music routine. The evening featured lovely poem recitations by Chinese Elective Students and a sweet rendition of the Butterfly Concerto performed by the Symphony Orchestra (featuring Andre Brokman on Solo Violin). The night also included challenging trivia, raffles and auctions of fantastic prizes. Thank you to all those involved in making the evening so successful and spectacular and thank you to all who attended (particularly the prefects who made the running of the night so smooth and seamless).

incredible Lion Dance and the buzz around the Hall as we dined, struggled with trivia questions
and enjoyed each others company
Report From Last Week’s P & C Meeting
Our warmest thanks again, to Mr
Ayre, for his wide-ranging and very informative talk about Sport at SBHS. We discussed issues
such as participation, training, employment of coaches, opportunities for boys to improve their
fitness, and funding of programs. The P&C then moved to fund the following projects within
the School:
- Ongoing digital and sound system installation into classrooms $15 000
- Solar panels and electrical infrastructure $10 000
- Purchase of Social Sciences textbooks due to syllabus changes $10 000
- Second last annual repayment of tennis court loan $10 000
- An increase in the parking levy applied by the School to P&C parking events, from 35% to 38%, after the first $500.
Ms Christina Chow, head of the Canteen sub-committee, presented the P&C with $30,000, as part distribution of Canteen earnings for 2008/2009. This is a tremendous contribution from the Canteen, which turned over $420,000 in 2008. The P&C warmly thanks our Canteen staff, and welcomes and supports the efforts of the many volunteers. These results could not be achieved without the dedication of both staff and volunteers. It was noted that there is still some need for volunteers on the roster mid-week - Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
Dr Jaggar outlined the science lab project that was reported in last week’s High Notes. It is hoped that the Hall kitchen project will be undertaken around the same time. Dr Jaggar then reported on the Government initiative to issue all Year 9 students with laptops later this year. Other technology developments include improvements to the start-up time at the beginning of lessons for teachers using computer-based learning, as well as increased bandwidth for net services.
Dr Jaggar reported on the successful operation of the new Senior Library, with many senior students taking the opportunity to use the space for study. The Junior Library is also operating to the great benefit of junior school students.
Ms Barbara Taylor has arranged with Sydney City Council to have bins delivered for recycling glass and plastic bottles. Please look out for them and use them wisely !!!!
High Rugby
There was a reference in the media this week to changes that have
occurred to High and Sydney Grammar School’s participation in the GPS rugby competition.
High and Grammar will share rugby fixtures this year, with Grammar competing in First XV and
A-team fixtures and High in Third XV and B-team fixtures. The High v Grammar first grade match
will take place as usual in the last round of the 2009 competition.
These changes have been temporarily introduced as part of our process of building the participation rates, skills, strength and success of rugby at High. There has been a resurgence of rugby in High’s junior years. In 2008 we fielded four 13s teams for the first time in at least 10 years. Last year’s 16As defeated Newington to record High’s first win in an A v A match for many years.
As any long term follower of school boy sports will have observed, there are often cycles in popularity of the different sports offered at school.
Just as a couple of examples, Sydney High currently fields 18 cricket teams, unmatched by any other school in the GPS competition. Our basketball teams throughout many age groups are earning successes in the GPS competition, culminating in our basketball Firsts and Seconds posting historic wins over Riverview, the strongest basketball school in the GPS competition. Over 85% of our students participated in Saturday sport last year.
Whatever the score, our philosophy at High is safe, enjoyable and successful participation for all and any boy who plays his chosen sport..
