High Notes final edition for 2009
This is our final edition for 2009. Thank you to all our regular contributors, our editor Ms Northey and our proof reader, Mr. Dowdell. I hope that all the High Family had access to the publication in hard copy or electronic form. If anyone has any feedback on the publication or suggestions as to how to improve it, please email me your suggestions.

High Talent
Chris Morrow (Year 10) won the All Schools U17 High Jump with a third attempt clearance of 1.99m. Congratulations, Chris! The Australian Government awards 500 prizes nationally for outstanding academic achievement in the final years of secondary education. Winners of the Australian Student Prizes worth $2000 for 2008 were: Ajay Balachandran, Alvin Leung, Daochen Tong and Justin Zuo.

School Certificate Results
This year with the additional students in Year 10 (180-202), we expected a weakening of our School Certificate test results. In fact, the results held up well. English had the highest mean since 2006 at 87.16.The z score (1.14) was right on the long term average. In mathematics the mean was slightly down on 2008 at 92.76 but the z score (1.90) was the highest since 2006. In science the mean was the highest since 2005 at 87.52 and the z score (1.17) better than 2008. In history the mean at 86.11 and z score at 1.25 were the highest since 2006. In geography also the mean (85.33) and z score (1.21) were the highest since 2006. In computing skills the ‘high competency’ percentage slipped to 92.26 and the z score to 1.04. Overall, I was pleased that our results had not been adversely affected by our increased numbers and that the scores held up in all subjects. [NB the z score is expressed in standard deviation units and is calculated by subtracting the state mean from the school mean and dividing the result by the state standard deviation.]

Where does your money go? – Building Funds
When you contribute to the Centenary Building Fund, approximately 70% of the funds are distributed to the Sydney Boys High School Building Fund or used to pay directly for building refurbishment or capital maintenance. When you contribute to the SBHS Building Fund, its principal project is the building of a new multipurpose centre to accommodate music, debating, drama and performances. Alternatively, if we can attract significant state or commonwealth funding, we can revive our plan for a twenty-first century library. This year our income was affected by the financial crisis and economic downturn, falling 30% to $132,218. Nevertheless, I acknowledge and thank the very large number of parents who supported us in these difficult times. The SBHS Fund spent a total of $98,944 on building refurbishment projects. Establishing the senior library was the major cost. Smaller building projects – a new storage room, built in cupboard storage for the library, a bicycle room – consumed some of the funds. We did a lot of cabling and data projector infrastructure works as well as retrofitting rooms with sound systems and security cupboards. We have paid all but 4 payments on our demountable building, which will become a school asset once we have completed payments in March, 2010. We needed to expand our office space to accommodate our two TSOs as part of the digital education revolution and the laptop program. There were costs associated with the science laboratories refit as we had to remove and refit data projector cages and cabling to make way for the refit. SBHS Building Fund ended the year with a balance of $763,871.45, represented by $740,000 in term deposits. This balance shows a growth of only $61, 000 over last year’s total. While we are not progressing as fast towards our new building as we would wish, the needs of our current students must come first and we have to meet the challenges for infrastructure that e-learning demands.

I exhort all parents to continue to support the centenary Building Fund and to top up their contributions to the Monthly Giving Program or our occasional appeals for support for the SBHS Building Fund.

Visual Arts Exhibition and Thank You Reception
Julie Connolly and I hosted the annual reception coinciding with the annual visual arts exhibition. The variety and skills exhibited by the artworks on display were impressive. The Sailing Committee provided an interesting assortment of finger food while the P & C served refreshments. The outgoing Canteen volunteers – Year 12 parents - were thanked with gifts and ‘thank yous’ were offered all around to many people who help make High the learning community that it is. The evening was interrupted by a southerly change which made managing some display screens difficult. Everybody coped very well considering there was no power available and the kitchenette was out of action for renovation. Thank you to everybody who assisted in making the evening a success.

Laptop audit
The DER team conducted a laptop audit this week during Year 9 mathematics classes. About 165 laptops were scanned in 15 minutes. As a result of the audit, six boys had their laptops confiscated for breaching the DER User charter signed off on by all boys receiving laptops. Mr Prorellis is applying the school policy as published in High Notes (Vol 10, No 39, 4/12/09). Students are again advised to take our warnings about negative consequences for misuse seriously.

One Hundred Years of The Record

This year marks the 100th anniversary of “The Record” – the magazine of the Sydney Boys High School – which was first published in December 1909. To commemorate this milestone, “High Notes” is publishing a selection of editorials from the various editions published over the past century.

This week we are publishing the editorial from the issue of 1977. Written at a time when the changes in the Education system had come to threaten Sydney High’s unique position in State education, this editorial, a joint effort of the 1977 editorial team, urges the School to live up to, and enhance, its reputation.

Editorial
Looking back on the year, the Record Committee found it to be one of few highlights, and fraught with problems. To begin with, the school is being pressured from outside as never before: the report on “The Education of the Talented Child”, commissioned by the Minister for Education, advocates the “phasing out” of selective High Schools such as ours, and the whole attitude of the present Government is to cut back on finance for education, leaving the future of Sydney High somewhat under a cloud. To complicate matters, several aspects within the school also need attention, some desperately. In order to overcome these attacks from the community in general it is first necessary to strengthen the school from the inside. In doing this, the standards of the past can be maintained, or even raised, and the attacks upon the school thwarted. What, then, are these problems? Most tend to the cultural rather than the sporting side of the school. Musically the past few years have seen a decline in all three areas – Orchestra, Band and Choir. These institutions, which have within past memory claimed State and National titles, and performed at the Opera House, and on television, are today foundering with little physical help and even less moral support. Likewise debating and public speaking have suffered an alarming decline in numbers, yet those who do participate gain valuable experience and much enjoyment.

It does not take much analysis of these and associated problems to realise that the fault is not in the activities themselves but in the large numbers who do not avail themselves of the opportunities presented to them, and thus deprive themselves of the obvious benefit to be gained. This is illustrated by the wave of unprecedented apathy which seems to have settled over the school, and unfortunately threatens to cause the demise altogether of these worthwhile activities. Let us hope a renewed interest in the immediate future will see a return to the pinnacle of success attained so often in the past.

Up to now we have painted a fairly gloomy picture of 1977, and yet there were several bright spots, primarily on the sporting fields and also in community aid. This year has seen a revival in sporting accomplishments, with more football, cricket and basketball teams than have been present for many years. And the results have proved to be as good, if not better, than those of the past decade, with few exceptions. Similarly, “community consciousness”, as generated by charity work, will surely continue to build on the firm base laid this year.

Thus comes 1977 to an end, a year with a few highlights, and yet sufficient to ensure that the next few years will indeed see the solving of the problems mentioned above.

Our Training Officer, 2LT Will Clegg has been awarded First Place in the Kokoda Foundation’s Junior Strategic Writers Competition.

Mr Clegg picked up his prize at the Foundation’s recent Dinner in Canberra. The dinner was attended by a range of very high ranking Australian and allied officers.

A German Christmas Tale

A report from my exchange in Germany!

Hi all,
Herzliche Grüße aus Deutschland!
This is Andre Brokman in Year 11 saying ‘Moin!’ from Germany. I’ve been here in Germany now about a week and a half on exchange and have been having an absolute ball. Already I’ve learned a heap of new German, made a bunch of new friends, and have learned so many new things. My host family has been so fantastic and helpful in helping me settle in here, getting into a daily routine, and adjusting to school life here (which, whilst we’re on the topic, has been really good and very interesting, though somewhat challenging considering everything is taught in German…).

Experiencing first hand the Christmas spirit here, most obviously seen through the beautiful (and tasty) Christmas Markets, has been especially rewarding. Christmas is taken as a very serious thing and in order to better experience the Christmas spirit I’ve actually organised myself to play in a string quartet on Christmas Eve at a local church service! At the invitation of my hostie, I’ve also enlisted myself into a recorder ensemble, and will be playing Christmas carols in the local (extensive) Christmas Market. However, as I’m staying in the ‘Mitteldeutschland’ city of Bielefeld between Hanover in the east and the Ruhr Area to the south-west, I might not get to experience a white Christmas - but here’s hoping! What is assured though is that it will be very cold. Yesterday we had our first proper frost and it was stunning! Everything was frozen (including a nearby pond), everything was fresh, and there was a beautiful stillness in the air. Everything was white too, so I could even pretend it was snow as well. What was even better though was walking around in the -2 degree early morning temperature in nothing but shorts and a T-shirt – in order to better get a feel for the cold, you see….Hmmm, the things one decides are sensible things to do when overseas…..

Anyway, there are two things so far that have really surprised me:

1. American accents.
2. Ugg boots.

Due to the fact that many students here have taken advantage of the “Spend a High School Year Overseas” Program (or some such thing) and have mostly spent their year in the US, I’ve been spoken to by a number of students here in perfect English in perfect American accents. In fact, exchanges here in general are far more common; at the moment I am one of roughly 20 exchange students here at the Bethel Gymnasium, however that figure is larger than normal. However, back to my original point - you can well imagine my shock upon hearing here in Germany the perfect Californian accent, the perfect American southern accent, and the perfect American northern accent. Anyway, that really has added an unexpected and interesting dynamic to my time here. What’s interesting is that the rare few who’ve spent their exchange year in New Zealand have not been able to pick up the NZ twang. This extends too to a complete lack of ability to mimic anything ‘Australian’ I say (in an Australian accent). Ugg boots. Would you believe it, but what has gone out of fashion in Australia has actually enjoyed an astonishing surge in popularity here in Germany (in my opinion, perhaps one of the most unlikely places for this most unfashionable footwear to occur). However, most aren’t aware of their Aussie origin, instead believing them to be of an American origin and to be an American import. In fact, most don’t seem to be too aware of anything Australian short of the clichéd images of Uluru, the Great Barrier Reef and the Opera House/Harbour Bridge duo. However, that’s to be expected I suppose considering our distance away, size, etc.

Before finishing up, I’d like to mention that this exchange I’m on is one conducted and organised by the SAGSE (Society for Australian-German Student Exchange) and GASS (German Australian Scholarship Students). The whole program is designed and offered only for those in Australia and New Zealand wishing to make a student exchange to Germany (and vice-versa for those interested in Germany). Through the ongoing sponsorship of the program by a number of both German and Australian companies they are able to offer 10 scholarships to interested students in NSW, as well as 22 others to those in other states. The sponsor pays for the flights to and from Germany as well as the Berlin camp (held in the final week, and includes a reception at the Australian or NZ embassy). My sponsor is A Hartrodt Logistics, who I am deeply indebted to. The program for the Australian ‘Stipis’ runs for 10 weeks over late November to the end of January for those in Year 11. We spend 4 weeks with our host families, a week on Winter Camp, enjoy 5 days of free travel in small groups, another 2 weeks with our host families, and then finally 5 days of Berlin Camp to round everything off. There are only two things required in order to win the scholarship: a keen interest in Germany, German and everything German as well as an open-mind, decent school marks and a respectable level of school involvement, and finally, a basic grasp of the language.

P&C Thank You Cocktail Party
Our warmest thanks to the parents and students from Sailing who provided and served the very generous and delicious supper at the end of year thank you party held last Tuesday. Over 70 parents and staff came together to celebrate the end of the year and acknowledge the hard work contributed to the School by parents, from working in the Canteen through to heading up a co-curricular committee. The Art Show was again terrific, recognising the substantial creative talents of High students – thank you to the Art department.

Thank you to all parents for their ongoing support and contribution to the P&C and the School. Very best wishes to everyone for a safe and relaxing holiday and Christmas season.

From the Canteen

The end of the school year is nigh upon us, so…..

• Not all of our normal food, especially snacks, will be available as we are running down our stock in readiness for the summer break. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
• We would like to thank our loyal volunteers for their contribution to the smooth running of the canteen. Our monthly prize winners of a $10 lunch voucher for their sons are: October – Agnes Lee and November – Jenny Dong.
• We have put every volunteers name from this year into a lucky draw to win prizes we redeemed our supplier reward points for. Volunteer help is vital in ensuring healthy food for our boys and an ongoing income stream to the P&C for allocation to worthy school projects.

SRC Events

I would like to congratulate Patrick Desmond, Yr 12 (SRC Secretary 2008, School Captain 2009) for being selected to participate in the New South Wales Schools Constitutional Convention at Parliament House, Macquarie St, Sydney, on Monday 16th February, 2009.

The students at the State Convention will select 30 of their number to attend the 3-day National Convention which will be held in Canberra in March 17-19, 2009.

I am sure it will be a challenging and worthwhile experience for Patrick and I hope it leads to further leadership opportunities for him in the future.

Music Notes

France Music Tour
There will be TWO FULL Day rehearsals next Monday & Tuesday 14th & 15th December for all students going on the French Music Tour. Please bring your instruments, plenty of water, lunch, hat and sunscreen.

These are COMPULSORY rehearsals for ALL students attending the Music Tour 2010.

Music AGM & France Tour Meeting
The Music AGM and France Tour Meeting were held last Monday in the Staff Common Room. We would like to thank the following parents who have volunteered to take up positions on the Music Committee 2010 - Dani Hillier (President), Debbie Dukes (Secretary), George Comninos (Parking Co-ordinator), and Steve Sheldon (Treasurer) and also acknowledge all the parents who helped support the Music Program in 2009 through organisation, fundraising and attendance at concerts.

Following the Music AGM, the Music Tour to France and Flanders meeting commenced. A decision was made to go ahead with the Tour jumpers with measurements to be taken next Monday at the High store. Parents / students were asked to check their details and amend any incorrect information as wrong emails make it difficult to communicate information. We also ask that payments to ANGAS Travels be made duly and students are vigilant with their music practice and attendance to ensure the highest performance standard overseas.

Music Parking
Thank you to all the parents and students who helped out with the music parking last Saturday. We really appreciate you giving up your time and effort in supporting the program and any funds raised contribute to the Music Performance Program. Please be available for Parking on Wednesday 6th of January 2010. The 1st shift will start at 7:30am with the 2nd shift starting at 10am.

Ensemble rehearsals
A reminder to ALL students in the performance program an 80% attendance rate is required for award scheme points. If you are unable to attend a rehearsal, you must notify your ensemble director beforehand or provide a written note from your parent.

Music Tour Band Members – MUST attend every fortnight rehearsal – Week As (Stage Band – every Wednesday.) We have very high expectations to meet and with the amount of demanding repertoire and limited time, we require your co-operation and support.

Music Tour Wine Fundraiser
The Music Tour Wine ordered earlier this term arrived last week and is ready to be picked up from the Music Staffroom. Please come up and collect your orders before the end of the term or they may become Christmas cheer.

SHS Rowing Committee

Family Regatta Day
It was terrific to see so many families attend our Family Regatta Day last Saturday. It was perfect weather and beautiful water for rowing, and lots of parents, siblings, friends and new 2010 Year 7 boys did just that. Simon Hoadley and his team of rowers did a great job helping everyone have a successful rowing experience, and I hope you all enjoyed it.

I'd like to thank the committee and the many other parents for doing all the jobs required to make it a wonderful day. Tanya Arsenova, Anita Bezjak, Helen Montanaro, Stephen Collier, Katharine Deacon, Nada Andrews, Steve Whiting, John Petrie, Peter Ambrose, Geoff Andrews, David Blomberg, Donna Moss, Cheryl Bow, Iris Lau, Annette Ng, Min Wang, Soogie Sim, Anna Caetano, Charles Ovadia and Noi Darunee all gave their time and 'expertise' to make it a successful day and we managed to raise approx $800 whilst enjoying ourselves. With the marquee set up and looking festive, the barbecue lunch by the water was not only delicious, but very social.

Thank you also to the many parents who donated items for the hampers that were raffled on the day. Helen Vertoudakis and her team put 22 hampers together.

Juniors camping at the Sheds
Year 8 (2010) will be experiencing their first camp on Sunday 13 Dec, and Year 9 (2010) rowers are camping on Monday 14 Dec. These camps allow the boys to be able to row at the best time of day on the river – very early morning, and it is a good introduction to the routine and structure of the rowing camps.

It is also a good introduction to the parents’ roles including the cooking and staying overnight duties. If you haven’t already volunteered, please do, as you will be surprised at how pleasant, rewarding and enjoyable it is.

High Cricket Bulletin

With the GPS Competition completed for Term 4, High Cricket swung into its Representative Programme in competition with Brisbane State High School, Melbourne High School and the Brisbane Grammar School with an all-out effort from coaches, team officials and a small group of parent supporters who provided billets for the boys from Brisbane State High.

We owe a big thank you to Julie Connolly and Anne Wall who were the billet coordinators for the Under 15 and Under 14 groups respectively, and if it was not for their perseverance, we would have fallen well short of billet support. Our appreciation in addition to Julie and Anne should also go to those parents who put up their hands and took billets, and I extend a sincere thank you on behalf of the boys and school. This is an area that must be re-visited when we consider future participation of boys in interstate sporting exchanges

The weather wasn’t shaping up according to projected forecasts and played its part on Day 1 and 2 against Brisbane State High, matches being abandoned in the afternoon. It was then fine for days 4 and 5 for the Barberis Cup team in Melbourne, 38 degrees for the 5 Highs Team’s departure on day 6 and then promised us more wet weather for this week for Brisbane Grammar.

And so the week created a festival of cricket with many boys getting their first opportunity to represent their school in Interstate Competition

Sunday 6th December
The Sydney Boys 5 Highs Team of Brian Kelly (Capt), Andy Liu, Michael Phung, Nakul Bhagwat, Dileepan Pious, Kieran Taylor, Sangeeth Subramanian, Ashwin Ramesh, Oliver Moroni, Samuel Lane, Sivasara Sooriakumar, Avindu Vithanage with Barry Davison (coach) and Dick Ayre (manager) departed for Brisbane for 4 days of interstate competition between the State’s Senior high schools. Good luck to all in the quest for this year’s title.
