High Talent
Well done to the 15s CHS knockout basketball team. They defeated Dubbo
to qualify for the last 8 tournament in Terrigal on November 18 & 19. Let’s hope High
can be successful again. Congratulations to Daniel Fang (Year 7) who was selected to perform in
the Schools Spectacular on November 27-28. The Making Movies Festival – DET has selected
two short films by High boys to be screened on Wednesday, November 18 at the Palace Norton St
Cinema. They were Watched ( G Samarasinghe, A Dutta, N Ooi Year 9) and Reel friends ( A Hau, L
Sheldon – Year 10). Great work, boys! Dr Finnie and her team of environmentalists made a
difference in their recent campaign to save electricity. In the Beyond Earth Hour Challenge 2009,
High reduced its consumption of electricity against the base week by 22.1%, thereby reducing
greenhouse gas emissions by an annualised 7154 kgs and a saving of $1230.82 in the electricity
bill. Well done to all concerned!
New Head Teacher Sport
This week our new Head Teacher Sport, Mark Pavone, joined us.
Mark comes to High from his position as Director of Sport at Cannon Hill Anglican College, an
independent school in Brisbane, competing in The Associated Schools sports competition. Mark has
had three years experience managing and developing sport in a comparable environment to the
AAGPS. The responsibilities of his position were aligned to those of the role required at High.
He holds a degree in Education. He is a professional personal trainer and is a level 2 rugby
union coach. He has level 1 qualifications in AFL, football, cricket, basketball, touch football
and volleyball. Mark brings vision, vitality and experience to the role. On behalf of all staff,
students, parents and Old Boys I welcome him to the High community.
New School Leaving Age
Pursuant to the Education Act 1990, as from January 1,
2010, the Education Regulation 2007 has made it compulsory to attend school from age 6
until the completion of Year 10 or attaining the age of 17, whichever comes first. Children
completing Year 10 must continue schooling until 17 unless engaged in full time approved
education and training or paid work or a combination of training and paid work (25 hours per
week). Parents of children can be prosecuted if their child does not satisfy this requirement.
Also, children over 15 are now personally responsible, in place of their parents in certain
circumstances. Completing Year 10 has three components: satisfactory attendance; undertaking an
approved program of study comprising approved courses; application with diligence and sustained
effort and achievement of some of the outcomes of each of these courses. The NSW Government has
no plans to phase out the School Certificate. It defends its standards-referenced tests claiming
NAPLAN is held early in Year 9 and tests only literacy and numeracy.
Subject Acceleration
Subject acceleration is NOT an elective subject.
Acceleration is a competitive entry special intervention on behalf of talented learners in a
curriculum area. Subject acceleration policy for each department is published on P drive and on
the website. There will only be one class of subject acceleration in each subject area offering
it as an intervention, with the exception of mathematics (in Year 11). Academic qualifications
are not the only consideration. Autonomous, self-managed students succeed at acceleration.
No student has permission to enter an accelerative intervention without approval from the
Head Teacher of the Faculty concerned and as from this year, the Principal. Students
should make elective selections on the basis that they do not succeed in their application
for acceleration. That way, should a student succeed in his application, he can be removed from
one of the elective classes to which he was assigned.

One Hundred Years of the Record
This year marks the 100th anniversary of “The Record” – the magazine of the
Sydney Boys High School – which was first published in December 1909. To commemorate this
milestone, “High Notes” is publishing a selection of editorials from the various
editions published over the past century.
This week we are publishing the editorial from the issue of August 1924. It describes
the start of a program that has continued to this day of commemorating achievement within the
Sydney High community around the walls of the School.
The Editor for this issue was Sydney Charles King (1924) who was School Captain in 1924
and also received an honour cap in that year. After school, he pursued a career as a journalist
and also represented Australia in Rugby, 1926-1932.
Editorial
An excellent suggestion was made by Mr J H Smairl, on the eve of his
departure, that we should have the portraits of those masters, students and ex-students who have
done something to enhance the reputation of the School, hung on the walls of the Assembly Hall
and corridors.
We agree that some steps should be taken to place before the succeeding generations of school
boys a reminder of what their predecessors have done. This would no doubt prove an inspiration
and instil into them a desire to emulate the lives of those who have helped to establish the
School spirit. Our aim is to turn out boys with high ideals, and there is no better way than by
setting before them examples of those who have shown nobility of character and have achieved
something for the good of mankind. There are many whose portraits would be an inspiration to all.
A beginning has been made in this direction by placing photographs of the winning four at the
recent GPS Regatta in the entrance hall of the School.
We should add the portraits of the Headmasters, who have given so unselfishly of their best. The
present scholars owe a great deal to their untiring energy and devotion to duty.
Rhodes scholars, Olympic Games representatives, and many other distinguished ex-students, have
received their early training at this School. We are proud of them all, and we feel that their
photographs should hang in our School.
Great War would certainly grace our walls, and would be a constant reminder to us to do our
utmost to maintain those ideals for which they gave their lives.
We feel confident that the whole School will co-operate to give effect to this excellent
suggestion.

Music Notes
Jazz Workshop
The Jazz Workshop for Tapas & Jazz in the Courtyard will be held
on Friday the 20th of November in the Great Hall. ALL students involved in Stage Bands
(including the Tour stage band) will be rehearsing from 10am-3pm.
The cost of the workshop is $20 payable on the day
Tapas & Jazz in the Courtyard and Matinee Concert
Our Tapas & Jazz in the
Courtyard will be held on Sunday the 22nd of November 2009 at 12pm followed by our
Matinee concert at 1pm featuring all the small ensembles. Students in Stage Bands
and Junior Jazz Ensemble are required to be at school from 11am for set up and a run through.
Other ensemble members please be at school by 12:30pm.
The Matinee concert following will include the String Ensembles, Philharmonic Orchestra,
Percussion Ensemble, Chamber Choir, Training Concert Band, Guitar Ensemble and Rock Bands.
We would like to invite you and your family to come along to both these musical performances and
enjoy the wonderful array of music.
Please bring along a blanket and picnic basket to enjoy at the Tapas & Jazz.
Music Tour Wine Fundraise
Following the success of the two wine tastings, we have a
selection of wines available for purchase with funds raised going towards supporting the Music
Tour to France.
Please collect an order form from the Music Staffroom if you would like to purchase from our
selection with a special SHBS Music Tour label, wonderful for a special occasion or a lovely
gift.
Ensemble rehearsals
A reminder to ALL students in the performance program an
80% attendance rate is required for award scheme points. If you are unable to attend a rehearsal,
you must notify your ensemble director.
Music Tour Band Members – MUST attend every fortnight rehearsal – Week A's
(Stage Band – every Wednesday.) We have very high expectations to meet and with the amount
of demanding repertoire and limited time, we require your co-operation and support.

The Penultimate Year Parents Group Dinner
Hello to Year 11 parents. The last five years have passed all too quickly and we find ourselves
starting the twelve-month countdown until our boys are sitting their HSC. Let’s celebrate

Support 1sts and 2nds!
The crowd that turned up for the both the 1st and 2nd grade
games, was phenomenal and played a major role in the massive wins by 1sts and 2nds. The tunnel
made for 1sts paved a path to their dominance over Shore. This week, there’s another chance
to support both teams at the gym. 2nds, who are equal 2nd on the GPS table play St. Ignatius, who
are on the top of the table at 10:00. Be there and experience one of the best games of this
season. 1sts will then take on Iggy’s at 11:15. Don’t miss out!

High Cricket Bulletin
Last Saturday was appalling in the number of players nominated in school teams who failed to
attend and caused our coaches to apologize to the opposition team and parents for our tardiness.
Whilst several were due to late injuries the number of excuses on Friday for “family
commitments” by the boys was beyond belief that the parents would not have advised their
boys in advance of the day before their commitment to school sport. That may appear as harsh
words but to think that most advised absences were less than 12 hours prior to their sport
commitment, whilst the remainder just failed to turn up without advice. It is totally unfair to
the boys who are committed to their sport and reputation of their school and supporting parents
present were very critical. I hope we see an improvement this week from the teams who suffered
the most.
1st XI (Day 1) HIGH 10 – 56 (33 overs) and 1 – 13 -V- SHORE 7 decl 157 (52
overs)
The 1st XI went to Northbridge determined to take on the defending Premiers and
in an inexplicable display with the bat were all out in 33 overs with the only run scoring
contributions from Avindu Vithanage (21) and Brian Kelly (14) Wicket takers were Saif Haque 3/21
and Avindu Vithanage 3/59. See the Website report from the team coach describing the sequence of
events on the day.
2nd XI (Day 1) HIGH 10 - 86 (48 overs) -V- SHORE 3 – 92 (28 overs)
In a day
which was to be the benchmark for 2nd XI selection, only three players stood up and passed the
tough-it-out-grit-test in trying to save High from total embarrassment through inept performances
from the remaining batsmen. Krishan Sivayogarayan (31), Krishnendu Dutta (20) and H.Sit (11)
being the only run scorers.
The day was then left for the bowlers to take wickets and rescue the team with Tom Connolly 1/8
(5), Sudam Dias 1/18 (7) and Shejil Kumar 1/22 (6) giving us some hope of recovery.
3rd XI (Day 1) HIGH 4 – 45 (14 overs) -V- SHORE 8 decl – 243 (48 overs)
Shore batted first as well as supplying players to substitute in the field for High (due to 4
selected players being absent and amassed 243 runs before declaring. Wicket takers for High were
Caspar Price 2/25 (10), Prashan Prabaharan 2/14 (4) and Hashan Subasinghe 2/42 (9). High started
the run chase with Rayan Khan (30) as a makeshift opener showing the way but 3 quick wickets have
put us on the back foot and a long haul on Day 2 to limit Shore to 1st innings points. Our
appreciation to the coach and players of the Shore 3rd XI for their sportsmanship in substituting
for all of our absentee players during their full innings
16 A (Day 1) HIGH 3 – 14 -V- SHORE 10 – 262
Shore batted first and the
quality of their batsmen indicated that the High bowlers were in for a torrid day and any loose
balls were put away with ease and assisted by a poor effort in the field by some players. Best of
the bowlers were Subhodh Weeratunge 4/15 (6), Pasan Pannila 3/82 (16), Andrew Hyunh 1/41 (9). At
stumps Subhodh and Leon Li are the not out batsmen
15 A (Day 1) HIGH 10 – 54 (30 overs) -V- SHORE 5 - 122
High batted first and
looked set for a big score at 16 overs being 2/42 and collapsed to be all out for 54 runs. Then
the High bowlers took 3 wickets to have Shore at 3/52 and as they passed our score the fielding
and bowling fell apart until we recovered late before stumps. Wicket takers were Anirudh Ramesh
1/20 (5), Tushar Joshi 2/30 (5) and Michael Liu 1/14 (3). We will be chasing early wickets next
week and see if we can achieve a result our way,, or limit the Shore points. See website report
14 A (Day 1) KINGS 8 decl – 280 defeated HIGH 10 – 143 and 6 – 133
A Round 1 report on one of the more encouraging performances from our youngest cricketers who
displayed true grit in holding the King’s XI to a first innings win and points. A result
that should be viewed and read by many of our under performing senior players. See the Cricket

4th XI SHORE 2 – 98 (13 overs) defeated HIGH 10 – 97

A
thrilling finish with one run to win and the last ball of the day Gamitha Samaarasinghe hit a 6
to take High to a 5 run victory. Our only success for the day. Run scorers were Daniel Smith
(40), Aman Saklsena (26) and Lalitha Katupitiya (18). No bowling figures were available. See

capitulated for a total of 49 with Richard Li (18), Ryan Gu (7) and Yasar Chowdhury (3)
contributing half of the team score. In reply High made Shore work for 14 overs to get the runs
with Yasar 2/15(5), Ryan 1/26(5) and Richard 0/1 (1).
14 B SHORE 8 – 193 (30) Defeated HIGH 9 – 60 (30)
Wicket takers were
Howard Gu , Michael Yu and Bevan Xie who took 2 wkts each and kept pressure on Shore throughout.
With High started their innings needing 6 runs per over with David Feng, Aaron Wong and Bevan Xie
holding out determinedly until the last ball was bowled in the 30th over. A tremendous team
