From the Principal

High Talent
Samir Kinger (Year 10) has been invited to an important Cyberbullying Forum, representing youth opinion. Samir's advocacy and leadership skills are earning him a very positive reputation. Congratulations to Sam Darcy (Year 11) for his selection in the Australian under 19 American Football (Gridiron Team).

SAS Recognition Week
This week is School Administrative Staff recognition week. The SAS staff are rightly described as the 'heart' of public education. Their contacts with boys, parents, tradesmen and members of the public shape the perceptions that people have about our school. Our SAS staff do so much to support the operations of the school and interact with the boys daily. Their work interfacing with the Department of Education is vital to enable teachers to get on with the job of teaching. Their efforts in communicating with parents on attendance and enrolment matters are important in maintaining public confidence in the efficiency and compassion of our school. Their work with printing and publishing underpins many of the lessons delivered by teachers. They source and supply equipment, resources and consumables that are essential in delivering pedagogy. Their expertise in financial administration keeps the school running. They keep excursions on track and support numerous school events. For these and many other services we thank them. Our SAS staff are particularly involved in school life and deserve our respect, courtesy and support.

Staff Volunteer Tutors
I want to thank all the staff members who have volunteered to be tutors for the night during Term 4 rowing camps on Mondays and Thursdays. Veronica Crothers, Stephen Storey, Peter Loizou, Jamie Kay, Paul Wright, Robert Devlin, Isabell St Leon and Suzanna Lim have kindly offered to mentor the boys during 'prep' after dinner. This is real school spirit in action. Your gesture helps to reassure parents and boys that taking on a sport as demanding as rowing can be balanced with continuing high standard academic progress at school.

Year 11 Reports
Your son should have received his second semester report and brought it home to discuss it with you. Boys are not considered to have completed requirements for the Preliminary Course until they have had their Clearance Forms signed and collected their reports. There are always a few stragglers who have not fulfilled their obligations in some way. I am keen to complete distribution of Year 11 reports next week. If your son has not brought his report home, please ask him to comply with the school policy and book in to receive it.

Peer Mentors
I am asking for volunteers to act as Peer Mentors for incoming students in Years 9-11. If you are willing to help, please register with my Assistant, Ms Williams, during next week.

Year 12 References
All the references where the various components were completed have been written and placed into the boys' portfolios. There are still twenty or so incomplete references. Year 12 leavers do not want to make a trip back to school to complete requirements for a School Reference. It would be much better to comply with our process and collect all their documentation simultaneously.

ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF THE RECORD
This year marks the 100th anniversary of “The Record” - the magazine of the Sydney Boys High School - which was first published in December 1909. To commemorate this milestone, “High Notes” is publishing a selection of editorials from the various editions published over the past century.

This week we are publishing the editorial from the issue of December 1919 on the School library. By 1919, the School library, which was established in a cupboard in the Castlereagh St school in 1888, consisted of over 1,000 volumes occupying a corner of the assembly hall on the top floor of the school at Ultimo.

The Editor for this issue was Archibald Thomas Harvey. After school, he pursued a career with the Prudential Assurance Company. As the chair of the OBU membership committee, in 1952, he first raised the need for a club for Sydney High Old Boys. The suggestion became a reality in 1957 with the establishment of the High Club.

The Library
The news that the proceeds of the Shakespearian Recital, shortly to be held, are to be devoted to the School Library should be very welcome news to all well-wishers of the School. There is no doubt that the real importance of the Library in a school such as ours is not understood. It should be one of the most important of school institutions, as one looks upon the Library to supplement what is learnt in class. It also serves as a relaxation for the brain, and by means of our Library we should inculcate a love of reading in the young mind which will remain and increase as one grows.

Is our Library capable of doing this? Just at present, no. The annual grant from the Union has been, until this year, £5. Now, considering the length of time that the greater part of the books have been on the shelves, this is not one-quarter enough to even keep the number of books at the usual strength. A certain number must be condemned and removed from the shelves each year, and so, as the years go on, the number of books becomes less and less. This year £10 was voted from the Union funds, but, taking into consideration the high price of books, even this sum was quite inadequate.

Well, then, the Library should benefit very considerably from this forthcoming entertainment. It should benefit to such an extent that it should be placed on a stronger footing than ever. Let a committee of masters and boys be appointed to cnsider on what books the money shall be spent. Hitherto there have been many books purchased which hardly ever leave the shelves. There is a certain class of literature needed, and let those supply it who understand boy nature, and the kind of reading matter they require.

One hears that in future the Tuck Shop is to be carried on on different lines. However, no matter how it is administered, let a certain proportion, or for that matter the whole, of the money received by the Union from the Tuck Shop be devoted to the Library. In this way it will become an institution worthy of the School.

From the Andrews Library

SENIOR BOOK LIBRARY AND JUNIOR BOOK AND CYBER LIBRARY
SENIORS - YOU HAVE TWO LIBRARIES! The book section takes a special decision to visit.

As the two Library system evolves and the hope to house the two important Library services under one roof for 600 Seniors unfortunately keeps receding there is a need to ensure that staff and boys respond appropriately to the reality this special 2 library situation demands.

There are approximately $450,000 worth of paper resources, which are less than 15 years old, housed in the Andrews Library. Much of this Collection was purchased in the last 9 years from Library Fund Donations from parents. Probably two thirds of these resources are Senior Resources. (The two Librarians will be working to establish the exact number and value of Senior Resources housed in the Andrews Library at the end of this year)

Senior boys need to be constantly educated to realise that they have in fact two libraries - a Cyber Library and Paper and DVD Resources Library. They are encouraged to work hard in whichever library service suits them best from day to day. If they wish to use computers they will have to choose the new Senior Library. If they wish to work with paper and electronic resources they can still choose to sit in the Quiet Area of the Andrews Library.

If the present lapse in book borrowing (an 86% decline for Year 10, 56% decline for Year 11 and 32% for Year 12 and 48% decline for Year 9) is not to continue Seniors need to think of themselves as not having been offered a reduction in services and opportunities but the real increase in opportunity having more library seating, more library computers and better library supervision, offers. They need to view themselves as having two libraries, not one. They need to immerse themselves in books and electronic resources as well as PCs from time to time and to work among them.

As they can see from the new resources constantly advertised in this regular High Notes contribution most of the resources accessioned in the Andrews Library are Senior resources and at present $450,000 worth of resources are going to waste and crying out to discovered. As well as looking up web databases, use your computer to look up your Library Catalogue. You may be pleasantly surprised at what your Library has available and waiting for you.

NEW RESOURCES THIS WEEK
Lots on display tables and new books stands! New resources are rotationally displayed on windows around the school as they finish being processed.

All of the Junior Non-Fiction was generously donated by Old Boys, so thanks to them!

AND THE WINNER IS…

Sai VIMALANATHAN in Year 7 came up trumps with the answer: these people on the poster have all won the Nobel Prize for Literature. A consolation prize went to Mrs Schlederer (Librarian) who was the first horse out of the barrier - but then disqualified as the race was really only for juniors. Anyway - Sai also scored a chocolate frog as he translated one of the quotes into idiomatic English! (Thomas Mann - We only find ourselves in the books we read). So there are still a few translations open - and frogs waiting. Now for the next question: 60 - 40 - 20?

SBHS Rowing Committee

On Saturday, 7 November 2009, Sydney High Rowing will compete in the first regatta of the season, a tricky 4500m race down the Parramatta River. This is a very competitive race, and last year there were over 100 crews representing all the main clubs and schools of Sydney. This year's race course has several aggressive corners, many challenging currents and plenty of good opportunities to pass other crews, so it will be a good test of our coxswains' ability to steer the boat, and of our rowers' ability to accelerate when called upon.

It is with great pleasure that I can name the Sydney High 1st Eight to represent our School at the Head of the Parramatta. Please offer coach, Ollie Wilson, and his talented crew all your support for this regatta.

  • A Blomberg (Captain of Boats)
  • J Whiting (Vice-Captain of Boats)
  • V Boulavine
  • D Edgtton
  • G Deacon
  • T Gollan
  • A Lazarou
  • J Musgrove
  • W Stefanidis

This crew has been specifically picked to train and compete with the sole objective of performing with distinction at the . The internal competition to earn a seat in the 1st Eight has been very fierce from our whole Senior Squad, and we should also see some strong results in our other top crews. Please congratulate the following athletes who have been selected in the School's 2nd Eight. They have had a strong week of training under coach, James Gerofi, and look primed for a good race.

  • M Ambrose
  • R Caetano
  • M Kite
  • B Li
  • A Liao
  • E Ovadia
  • J Petrie
  • H Schilling
  • C Wong

And last but not least, further congratulations to the athletes below, who have been selected into the High 3rd Eight. I believe this crew has been saving something special for the race, and if they were racing in the Melbourne Cup would definitely be worth a 'bob each way'!

  • I Bonch-Osmolovskiy
  • I Eveleigh
  • K Fang
  • D Gorey
  • L Lu
  • P Radhakrishnan
  • W Santucci
  • P Tran
  • B Trang

Good Luck to all the High Crews who are competing, and thank you to all the supporters who have helped the High Rowing program prepare for this regatta and the fast approaching season.

A solid and comfortable win for 1sts, provided them with their first win of the season, after losing to a strong Newington side and heartbreakingly, by one point against King's last week. The 2nds came through strong with another win and are well placed on the ladder at equal second, but the season still has a long way to go and anything can happen. Good luck, guys!

SHS Cricket

Last Saturday saw the completion of Group 1 first round fixtures which provided High with answers to several areas that all coaches can address as we prepare for the remainder of the season. Our basic skills levels in fielding, catching, bowling and fitness are below par and this is where we will target, so our batsmen face realistic totals to chase when we go into bat. Less emphasis on “easy” days in the nets, more commitment in the field.

1st XI KINGS 7 decl.- 291 (84) def . HIGH 10 - 163 & 10 - 124 OUTRIGHT LOSS

Day 2 The team's four point plan was emphasized by the team Coach before the start of play as to how High was to approach the task of reducing King's 1st innings total. This approach included valuing your wicket, building partnerships, good running between wickets and calling. A steady start by Brian Kelly and Avindu Vithanageand looked set to build a sound partnership and then disaster struck with Brian being run out and Avindu dismissed shortly afterwards. These two dismissals appeared to be the turning point for the remainder of the innings and throughout the day from which High never recovered. Wicket takers in King's innings Ashwin Ramesh 2/25 and Jesse Moffat 2/52 Ist Inngs Run scores in High's 1st inngs Avindu Vithanage (57), Brian Kelly (50) Nakul Bhagwat (15) and in the 2nd Inngs Sam Lane (37), Dileepan Pious (31) and Jesse Moffat (17). One that got away on us.

2nd XI KINGS 10 - 207 def. HIGH 10 - 117 & 6 - 107 LOSS ON FIRST INNINGS
Day 2 King's commenced the day looking for 15 runs to secure a 1st inngs lead and 50 minutes later after surviving the bowling lock-out, finally passed High's score to secure the points. Then in a forgettable period on the field six catches and a run out went begging allowing King's final total. High regrouped and set out to hold King's to a first innings win and in a tense finish saw High establish a small lead ensuring a King's 2nd Inngs would be required to win as stumps were pulled. A great bowling and fielding effort by the team but catches win matches and we didn't take ours. Highs 2nd inngs batting saw, Kumudika Gunaratne (22), Sangeeth Subramanian (22), Krishnendu Dutta (17), Nathan KOK (10no) and Caspar Price on debut (12no)

3rd XI KINGS 2-176 def. HIGH 10 - 174 LOSS ON FIRST INNINGS
The 3rd XI in this match was its first outing as a team and has finished with an encouraging result in a hard fought two day fixture which only allowed a first innings result. Raghib Siddiquee (46) was the main stay of High's innings and Hashan Subasinghe 1/24 (10) and Abdullah Sarker 1/30 (7) took the bowling honours. See website report

4th XI ST JOSEPH'S 3 - 63 def. HIGH 10 - 62 LOSS by 7 wickets
A match where the batting skills of the opposition were on display showing the value of multiple team practice sessions each week. High's run scorers were Rafat Kamal (10), Oliver Fio (9) and Robert Ma (7) with Robert Ma 2 wkts and Liam Aylmer 1 wkt as the only Wicket takers. See website report

5th XI SHORE (Score not available) def. HIGH 10 - 82
Michael Carr (15) and Alex Koeber(17) were the main run scorers in the first outing for the Fifths for the season. Details are sparse but it appears a good time was had by all. See website report

16A KINGS 4 - 206 def. HIGH 10 - 92 and 6 - 63 LOSS ON FIRST INNINGS
A good match for High as the boys found their feet as a new combination in this 1st round fixture which was finished off with a determined effort restricting Kings to 1st Inngs points only. The 2nd inngs run scorer was Andrew Hunyh (22no) with some fine bowling figures from Samir Kinger 3/52(13), Subhodh Weeratunge 0/22 (9) and Sachin Dhingra 0/29 (10). See website report

16C HIGH (16C) 9 - 92 (25) def. HIGH (16D) 9 - 71 (25)
This was an internal “bragging rights” fixture and apparently a good time was had by all. See website report Run scorers Shumit Hoque (58), Abhi Dutta (17) Christopher Oei (6) Wicket takers were Chris OEI 3/13 (5), Shumit Hoque 3/15 (5) and Emtiazul Hoque, Jeremy Yao, Suman Prusty and Nayan Rahman one wkt each.

15A KINGS 5 - 192 def. HIGH 10 - 94 & 10 - 41 LOSS OUTRIGHT by INNINGS and 57runs
Wicket takers Thilan Subasinghe 2 /17 and Owen Duffy and Krushaal Vyas one wicket each. Run scorers 2nd inngs Vasu Bhakri (9), Kevin Pham (7) and Anirudh Ramesh (6) See website report

14B St JOSEPH'S 3 - 220 def. HIGH 10 - 59 LOSS by 7 wickets
A good effort from a very young and inexperienced team who showed some real grit in never giving up. Run scorers were Allen Chen (15) and Peter Stephens (8) whilst on the bowling side Jackson Huang and Michael Yu had one wkt each and Peter and Eric YU pulled off a great run out. See website report

BARBERIS Year 9 CUP SQUAD ANNOUNCED
A squad of 16 players is announced to commence training post school on Wednesdays for the next four weeks. Christopher Oei has been added to the 15 names that were previously circularized. Only 12 players will be selected in the final team to travel to Melbourne on Wed 2nd December for the Barberis Cup. The squad is Ahdil Amsareen, Adam Booth, Tom Connolly, Sudam Dias, Sachin Dhingra, Krishnendu Dutta, Owen Duffy, Alexander Hughes, Lahiru Katupitiya, Lalitha Katupitiya, Jesse Moffat, Christopher Oei, Christopher Pinto, Aman Saksena, Daniel Smith and Sai Sivayogarayan,

UNDER 15 and UNDER 14 REP SQUADS
We have held back some nominations from boys for the Barberis Cup based on the number of players eligible in our senior XIs who are also available. The decision is to ensure that as many players as possible from these age groups get an opportunity to represent High against Brisbane. However, ALL nominating must be able to display a minimum of two of the three elements, to gain selection in either squad. Further information will be supplied at roll call at sport afternoons this week.

School Student Transport Scheme

School Student Code of Conduct
Students travelling on buses must

  • Dip school bus pass or pay the fare when joining the bus. This is particularly important as the data collected from the on bus fare collection system may be used for service planning purposes
  • Use school specials when provided
  • Vacate seats for adults
  • Follow the driver’s instructions about safety on the bus
  • Respect the needs and comfort of other passengers
  • Behave appropriately at all times (e.g. no offensive language, no throwing things)
  • Protect bus property (e.g. no vandalism)

Students are reminded to

  • Only use the school bus pass for its intended purpose i.e. for travel between home and school (does not include travel to and from sporting activities)
  • Maintain possession of the school bus pass at all times.

During 2009, authorised officers will be deployed to inspect Code of Conduct compliance on school bus services in the Eastern Region. Students who are found to have breached their obligations may lose their travel entitlement and possibly incur an infringement.

Letters Re Absence/Lateness/ Early Leave

When your son returns to school from being absent he is required to provide a letter of explanation signed by a parent or guardian. If your son is going to be late for school a note is also required. Alternatively you may contact the school by phone on 9361 6910 and dial “4” for the absentee line.

If your son has an early leave note he is required to have his note signed by either Mr Barris, Mr Dowdell or Mr Prorellis before 8:55 am and handed in to the Main Office immediately after. Each letter should be signed by a parent or guardian with the name date and roll class of your son printed clearly. Your son needs to pick up a leave pass from the Main Office before he leaves the school.

Leave
If you require leave for your son please, apply in writing and address your application to the Principal, Dr Jaggar, stating the reason and length of time of the leave. Your son must then present this application to Dr Jaggar for permission for the leave. Please remember to apply before the leave and not after.

The Principal must approve all leave applications.
