High Talent
Thomas Wilson (Year 12) was 9th in the Latin Continuers Course at the HSC. First and second grade basketball teams triumphed over St Joseph’s. Our 16s water polo team had their first win. Phillip Kurts (Year 12) completed the first Tri-Series Regatta on Rose Bay with two firsts and a third. Congratulations to all concerned.

Connected Classroom News
DET has commenced a series of e-bulletins on the connected classrooms program. The long awaited wireless installation rollout is scheduled for April. A training program for teachers will operate in May. In June the promised laptops for teachers will be delivered. This process will be followed by a rollout of computers to Year 9 students in July. Each year until 2012, succeeding cohorts of Year 9 students will be issued with laptops. Students will be expected to hold and use the laptops until Year 12, after which they will become their personal property.

Debating Coordinator Appointed
I am pleased to announce that Ms Dana Quick has been appointed as Debating Coordinator for 2009, replacing Ms Jocelyn Brewer. As you are aware, Jocelyn had to relinquish her position due to the demands of her new role as a School Counsellor. Jocelyn will be working with Dana this Friday to make the transition as smooth as possible. All students in Years 8-12 who wish to be involved in debating are urged to register by making their co-payments before February 20. On your behalf I want to repeat our thanks to Jocelyn for her five years of devotion, professionalism and high enthusiasm. She has raised the profile of High debating considerably and increased competitive opportunities in our area considerably. We will miss her!

Ms Quick is a qualified teacher, holding a BA, LLB from ANU. She runs her own business while teaching part time. She is a Fellow of the ANU Debating Society, having been a member since 1999 and serving as Social Officer and later as Vice-President. She was an Intervarsity Selector and represented ANU at various international competitions. She has adjudication experience, including as Grand Final Adjudicator at the Singapore Australs in 2001. Dana has the management, IT and interpersonal skills to carry forward our program. I am sure our debating community will make her feel welcome.

Changes to the Student Award Scheme for 2010
At High we are very proud of our Student Awards Scheme. Since 2001 participation by students in school activities has increased dramatically, as measured by their qualification for recognition in so many categories. Over the years the scheme has been evaluated and modified with the twin goals of maximising participation and recognising exceptional commitment. It is now time to adapt the Scheme to meet the needs of our School Within a School philosophy. For 2010, the requirements for the two schools will be differentiated. Boys have this year, 2009, to adjust to the changes.

Categories have been added to the Awards Scheme to reflect as comprehensively as possible all the activities engaging our boys. Stricter rules are now enforceable. Training requirements need to be met before students are signed off for GPS sports participation. Electronic recording of attendance is being used by more coaches and trainers. Attendance alone does not guarantee qualification for an award for an activity. Certain criteria have to be met. In general there is a tightening of expectations and accountability.

To fulfil the aim of personal development in the High Junior School, we will retain the current requirements of bronze (8), silver (16) and gold (25). In High Senior School, there will be higher expectations: platinum (36), plaque (46), School trophy (56). For outstanding participants, the Regional Director’s Award qualifying limit will be raised to 68.

Students enrolling after Year 7 will be afforded fast tracking opportunities to help them catch up to their cohort. They will be waived 50% of the qualifying total for each year they did not have the opportunity to earn awards. For example, if a boy enters in Year 8 and achieves twelve categories (ie 50% towards a higher category) he will be deemed to have satisfied the conditions for that category (ie silver). He would then be on equal terms with his cohort. A student enrolling in Year 9 would need the 50% rule to apply twice. By earning 12 categories in his first year (silver) and 13.5 in his second (Year 10) he could catch up to his cohort at Platinum. Year 10 enrolments would need the 50% dispensation for three years. If he tried hard, he could get 12, 13.5 and 15 in his three years at the school and still get a school trophy.

The Monthly Giving Program
As the school has changed banks, from the ANZ to Westpac, a revised agreement about how deductions by credit card will be credited to our SBS Building Fund is necessary. Donors who have contributed for 12 months are being asked in writing if they wish to continue. The funds from the monthly giving scheme are targeted on building works. Capital works have been necessary to set up the new senior library. We are paying off our purchase of Room 801. When these tasks are done, we will redouble our efforts to save for a new Multi Purpose Centre for the Performing Arts. Given the Commonwealth Government’s desire to fund capital projects, they may be interested in funding our project, particularly if we can come up with $1,000,000 by the end of the year as our contribution towards it. In tight economic times there are new opportunities for public funding. I am committed to monthly giving as a way of painlessly helping High towards its goal. I need many others to join the program to make a substantial difference to our overall total of funds raised.

From Languages: A German Assistant

After many exchanges of emails and phone calls our German intern, Henrik Dubicki arrived on Tuesday, February 10, on the doorstep of the Languages Staff Room. Henrik will be spending six weeks at our school, observing and team teaching classes in English, History and German. His home town in Germany is Kiel in Schleswig-Holstein, close to the Ostsee (Baltic Sea) and well known in sailing circles for the “Kieler Woche” (last week in June) one of the major sailing competitions of the world. Please say “hello” to him – or practise your German and greet him with “moin, moin”. His likeness is attached.

Year 12 Parents Surviving the HSC seminar

The P&C is organising a seminar for Year 12 parents on stress and the HSC. The guest speaker, Jane Sleeman is an experienced psychologist and school counsellor.

Jane gives lots of good advice and practical tips such as how to:

• handle stress (both you and your son's stress!)
• understand the HSC & other issues facing Year 12 students
• support and encourage your son
• how to avoid nagging!

Jane allows lots of time for answering questions and talking to people afterwards.

Many of last year's Year 12 parents found this seminar very helpful.

The Seminar is on Wednesday 25 February in the Great Hall. It starts with drinks and plenty of finger food (including Halal & vegetarian) at 6:15pm, with the presentation beginning at 7pm sharp.

Term 1 is now well under way for us in English. All students 7-12 have been issued with course and assessment overviews. Year 7 students have been asked to paste their overview into their English work book.

Wide reading…..is a vital part of our English program for all students. As much as possible wide reading enriches the English learning module being delivered in class. With this in mind we would appreciate your support in encouraging your son’s wide reading for Term 1 in the following areas:

• autobiographical and biographical texts in Year 7,
• science fiction texts in Year 8,
• narratives about war in Year 9,
• short stories from different cultures in Year 10.

Excursions in the pipeline….to extend our Year 7 students view of autobiographical and biographical texts we are currently planning an excursion to the NSW Art Gallery to see the Archibald exhibition and the Moran Portraiture exhibition at the State Library. We welcome any parents who would like to join us on this excursion. Please let Ms Trompetter know if you are interested.

Writing competitions…..Students in Years 7-9 are invited to take part in the 2009 Writenow Competition sponsored by the Sydney Writers Festival. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to hone their creative writing skills as well as be in the running to win some great prizes. Entry details are available from the English staffroom.

News from Latin

HSC Success…
Congratulations to the Year 12 group who sat the 2008 Higher School Certificate Examination in Latin.

The group achieved an excellent overall result: all students achieved strong Band 6 results in the Continuers paper and the Extension candidates achieved nearly full marks.

There were three accelerants in the group: Jacob Cao, Jack Chen and Thomas Wilson. These boys should be proud of their results; the fact is, they were in Year 11 at the time, competing with students who had completed the full six years of Latin. Yet, they achieved excellent results, with Thomas Wilson gaining 9th Place in the State for Latin Continuers. Thomas has been awarded a Certificate of Merit.

The current Year 12 is working well and we convey our best wishes to them for this year’s examination.

Italian Forum Excursion, Year 8 Latin
After last year’s successful excursion to the Italian Forum in Leichhardt, the teachers are organising a similar outing for the current Year 8 Latin classes. There will be the usual pizza-making and eating, followed by generous portions of gelato. And, of course, a lecture on Rome and the concept of the Forum. Permission notes will be given out soon.

Highlights of High Basketball 2008

We have the best functioning Basketball Committee and support network in my 6 years at the school and we will be looking for some new supporters later in the year.

Senior players look likely to achieve their aspirations of college in America or a professional playing career.

Our Coaching staff is providing the students with a range of sessions that use the most recent training techniques and strategies to focus on improving both individual skills and team concepts. Junior players are following the pathways created by the coaching staff and senior players.

We have the best Winning record by our second grade team in GPS competitions as far as records show on the AAGPS website and it looks likely that 2009 will be even better.

The under 15s were undefeated in GPS matches in 2008.

We won the State CHS Knockout in the under 15s age group defeating all Sports High Schools in NSW.

Our Opens State Knockout team placed in the top 5 schools despite mostly being Year 11 students. Therefore this year we expect even better results.

Music Notes

Performance Program
Everything is now up and running - tutors, lessons and rehearsals. Please ensure boys attend all scheduled rehearsals.

All Year 7 students should by now have sorted out the instrument they wish to learn, the tutor for that instrument, and have lessons for Term 1 organised.

If you are borrowing an instrument from the school, please collect Instrumental Loan forms from the Music Staff. All Instrumental Loan forms need to be returned as soon as possible. If you have any requests, or queries about the Performance Program, please do not hesitate to contact the Music staff.

Music Tour 2010 to France
As announced in last week’s High Notes, the Music Performance Department and Music Supporters Group is planning a Music Tour to France in 2010. The Marching Band will be performing at the Villers-Bretonneux ceremony in the Somme, and in Ypres. We are also looking to take an orchestra and stage band to give variety to our performances in Flanders and Paris.

We have had a good response so far, but still need more students to fill all the positions. This will be a magnificent opportunity for all our musicians to perform in some of the most important ceremonies and venues for Anzac Day in Europe.

Please speak to the Music Staff for further information. Expressions of Interest Forms are available outside the Music Staffroom and need to be completed and returned to the Music Staff by Monday 16 February 2009 as final numbers need to be given to the organisers.

Music Supporters Group (MSG) Meeting
Our first MSG meeting for 2009 will be held on Monday 2 March at 6:30pm in the Staff Common room. We would like to especially invite all new Year 7 parents to attend the meeting.

The SBHS Music Supporters Group assists the Music Department with financial and practical support to help enable them to offer this program. The group also assists in organising the showcase concerts throughout the year, including the Cabaret Night – an evening of Jazz and dancing and the Annual Music Camp. We also provide barbeques for the boys at some music events through the year.

Being a SBHS Music Supporter does not require a huge commitment of your time. The group meets prior to musical events, usually on a Monday evening in the Staff Common Room. Discussion is usually focused on instrumental requirements, fundraising and planning for upcoming performance events. You may have experience or contacts to help our fundraising for the music program or you may just like to attend to learn more about your son’s performance music experience at SBHS. As a supporter you may volunteer your time once or twice during the year to assist with our fundraising parking, help on a barbeques or assist at a performance event.

Sandip Burman – Tabla Master presents Workshop at High.
Monday 16 February @ 9.00am will see all the Percussion and elective music students participating in the Sandip Burman Masterclass and workshop in the Great Hall.. Sandip is an outstanding tabla performer who has worldwide renown. We are very lucky to be able to have him work with our boys. Please ensure that all students participating are in the Hall by 9.00am.

There was a record 126 students in the 1st week of debating coaching, if you wish to join you must complete the following by FEB 20 to secure a place.

YEAR SEVEN: ALL NEW DEBATERS
There will be an information session and introduction to Debating meeting in the Staff Common Room at 6:30pm on Tuesday Feb 3. All parents and/or students are invited to attend. It is optional, and will provide in-depth information on all aspects of debating.

To join debating you need to do TWO things. In Year 7, Debating is free.

The 14As defeated Joeys for the first time ever. Coach Mian Wang says the team is rapidly improving and he is impressed in particular with his team’s rebounding game and Eamon Kelly even had 11 rebounds!

This week’s standout is Byron Chen for his 16 points in the 13As. Byron should definitely attend junior firsts on Thursday afternoons. Mr Hayman thinks he has some talent that, with practice, could result in first grade representation. Watch out for this guy as he could be making a very early 1st Grade debut!

Grammar Regatta Results
The junior rowers had their first regatta of the season on Saturday morning at Hen and Chicken Bay.

Our Year 8 Coxed Quad Sculls started the morning with 1000m races and it was great to have 5 crews representing High, even though our 3rds and 5ths didn’t get to start.

• 1sts – Edwin Li, Jaan Pallandi, Jonathon Clements-Lendrum, Daniel Keogh, (c) Daniel Tam beat Cranbrook 2 by 50s to come 5th to Grammar, Riverview, Newington and Cranbrook 1.
• 2nds – Dominic Tran, Allan Feng, Amarbir Singh, Andrew Bui, (c) Timothy Collier came 4th to Riverview, Newington, Grammar.
• 4ths – Jerry Yip, Jeffrey Ni, Stephen Guo, Kin Pan, and cox, Edgar He came 4th in their race to Riverview, Grammar and Newington.

Year 10 VIIIs raced over 1500m against some tough competition.

• 2nds – Ilya Bonch-Osmolovskiy, Isaac Eveleigh, Eric Ovadia, Gorey, Andrew Gaffney, Dennis Kim, Duy Nguyen, Raymond Zhai, (c) Francis Lin came 4th in their race
• 1sts – Sean Martin, Allen Liao, Koren Fang, Jonah Petrie, Leo Lu, William Stefanidis, Timothy Gollan, Ryan Caetano, (c) Anthony Chung were doing particularly well when unfortunately they had a breakage at the 500m mark, but still finished a good 4th.

State Championships at SIRC
The senior 1st and 2nd VIII and the 1st IV competed in the State Championships at Penrith on Saturday with the temperature around 40. It is always tough for High at this level of competition and the crews gained good experience from the event.

Welcome Year 7
It was fantastic to see so many Year 7 boys turn up at the sheds for rowing on Saturday – all 27 of them. The whole Year 7 cohort will have the opportunity to ‘Try Rowing’ over 3 days next week and let’s hope more boys will sign up.

Camps
The camps for the boys are going particularly well thanks to the parents who are helping cook and staying over with the boys. Particular thanks need to go to Bernie Desmond and Tanya Arsenova for organizing all the catering, and Anita Bezjak for the roster.

We look forward to seeing all crews row in the Joey’s Regatta this Saturday at Rodd Point.

Sydney Boys High Cricket

 

A very hot and taxing day last Saturday brought about a black day for cricket not only on the field, but with 27 boys from the Years 7, 8 and 9 teams letting down their team mates by being absent , with all but 3 advising in advance at sport. This is the second successive week for this occurrence and it is unacceptable within the structure of the cricket section, particularly to the other team members who honour their selection. Players who do not meet their commitment are being recorded to be recommended they attend another sport to ensure their physical fitness can be improved and where they will participate.

RESULTS
We ask coaches and captains to ensure results are submitted because we all like to see how our teams have fared each Saturday and the responsibility lies within the team, or parents to who support the team to volunteer to assist in this area. It is important when the boys achieve good results, that they receive recognition within the school community. Don’t sit back and assume others are volunteering, help your boys and team by being their PR person. All reports are submitted on a formatted result sheet which can be found on the Website. All results must be submitted by Sunday evening each week. See website for details

WEDNESDAY SPORT – CRICKET BATS and TEAM CRICKET BALLS
As the school supplies team kits it is for that team’s use at matches and we then provide equipment for training, mainly pads, thigh guards, stumps and cricket balls. Unfortunately it appears that a percentage of our cricketers lack respect for such equipment and as a result, PLAYERS Year 9 and above ARE ADVISED TO HAVE THEIR OWN BATS AVAILABLE. We will now sign out a minimum number of bats each sports day. They will need to be signed for and that person will be responsible for such bat OR THE REPAIR OR REPLACEMENT COST. Each team and coach will have to supply a quantity of used match balls and training balls in support of netting /training which have now been issued. No further training balls will be issued at the nets

AAGPS COMPETITION – HIGH at the TOP
Sydney Boys now have 18 teams available for our school cricketers and we are now equal with St Joseph’s in the No.1 position. Our coaching staff has grown this term and we have now achieved covering our Years 7, 8 and 9 teams with coaches who are available on sport days and Saturdays and have one-on-one contact in the development of teams. Unfortunately some of the schools we play in the GPS Competitions do not have the same number of teams and so each week we have to consider arranging additional fixtures which the Head Teacher Sport addresses. This mainly applies to the Under 16 (Year 10), 14(Year 8) and 13(Year 7) age groups. Should there be occasions where some but not all of our additional matches required are met, we will place players in teams where there are either vacancies, or rotate them in regular teams.

The Cricket Committee and supporters are advised that a meeting will be held on WEDNESDAY 25th FEB at 6:00pm in Room 901 (gymnasium –upstairs). Agenda items include Cricket Dinner - Presentation of Awards – Term 4 (2009) Interstate Tours - Equipment support - Fund Raising - General Business.

No this is not an error. St. Joseph’s understood the boys were on debut and new to cricket and allowed them to bat several players twice. We thank St Joseph’s coach, manager and team members for their sportsmanship.

We now come into the final 6 weeks of cricket with Group 1 (3 Rounds) and Group 2 (6 Rounds) to be played against schools that we always have shared results in wins and losses over the years. Let’s finish this season with 3 (Group.1) wins and at least 5 of 6 of the (Group2) teams.

School Student Transport Scheme (SSTS)

School Student Code of Conduct – Students travelling on buses must :-

• Dip school bus pass or pay the fare when joining the bus. This is particularly important as the data collected from the on bus fare collection system may be used for service planning purposes
• Use school specials when provided
• Vacate seats for adults when requested
• Follow the driver’s instructions about safety on the bus
• Respect the needs and comfort of other passengers
• Behave appropriately at all times (e.g. no offensive language, no throwing things)
• Protect bus property (e.g. no vandalism)

Students are reminded to :-

• Only use the school bus pass for its intended purpose i.e. for travel between home and school (does not include travel to and from sporting activities)
• Maintain possession of the school bus pass at all times.

During 2009, authorised officers will be deployed to inspect Code of Conduct compliance on school bus services in the Eastern Region. Students who are found to have breached their obligations may lose their travel entitlement and possibly incur an infringement.

Letters Re Absence/Lateness/ Early Leave

When your son returns to school from being absent he is required to provide a letter of explanation signed by a parent or guardian. If your son is going to be late for school note is also required. Alternatively you may contact the school by phone on 9361 6910 and dial “4” for the absentee line.

If your son has an early leave note he is required to have his note signed by either Mr Beringer, Mr Dowdell or Mr Prorellis before 8:55 am and handed in to the Main Office immediately after. Each letter should be signed by a parent or guardian with the name, date and roll class of your son printed clearly. Your son needs to pick up a leave pass from the Main Office before he leaves the school.

Leave
If you require leave for your son please, apply in writing and address your application to the Principal, Dr Jaggar, stating the reason and length of time of the leave. Your son must then present this application to Dr Jaggar for permission for the leave. Please remember to apply before the leave and not after.

The Principal must approve all leave applications.
