High Talent Congratulations to the members of our School Ski team who qualified from the Regional Interschools Skiing Championships held in the July school holidays to compete in the NSW State Interschools Skiing Championships in Perisher next week. Good luck to Tim Collier (Year 8), Tom Connolly and Jeremy Dobrowolsky (Year 9), Brendan Hancock and Sam Lane (Year 10). Last Friday night our GPS first grade debating made it three in a row with a strong win against Kings. They are performing well as a team. Well done to Ms Rohr and her drama students for their successful Drama Showcase performed last Thursday evening.

From the Andrews LibraryWELCOME to our new Senior Library colleague, Mrs Suzanne Gordon. It is great to see a Librarian there especially as Year 12 is entering the Trial HSC and HSC study phase. HSC candidates are reminded that there are loads of HSC Study Guides in the Librarian’s office which can be loaned out. The Senior Library is a great place for students to study for exams. LAPTOPS TO YEAR 9. Another very exciting development for the Junior Library and indeed for all teaching staff is the handout of Laptops to all Year 9 Students which took place this week over three days. The technicians who are assisting staff and students with these laptops will be stationed permanently in the Junior Library at the Circulation Desk to make access to help very easily available. It is a very interesting for the boys who now have fabulous opportunities to write notes, classwork responses and essays easily and tidily all the time and who will get opportunities to learn to organise bookwork and deadlines in a way they have never had the chance to do at school - as we all know computers organize us all brilliantly. Teachers will find this fantastic as they can use Moodle to harvest and grade responses and model good student’s work for the benefit of others and nothing will get lost!!! Marks can be shown to students immediately to totally engage their interest or not if teachers want to adjust them for fairness before revealing them. The possibilities are endless and future developments will be just as exciting. ONLINE MENTORING/TEACHING ORGANIZATIONAL SKILLS With complete personal access at all times to laptops It would be interesting and quite possible and maybe less intrusive for the students concerned that staff develop an online mentoring course for students who have occasional bursts of trouble coping with the demands of work at a Selective High School and GPS Sport on Saturdays as well as Music, Debating and Community Service. The advent of laptops and Moodle could make this process email or Moodle driven. This could mean that students were removed from class less often but could be quite efficiently monitored. A challenge for Year Advisers perhaps! HSC STUDY GUIDES AND INFOCUS PAMPHLET FILES have been gradually moving over to the Senior Library all this year. These are all on the Library OASIS Database and can be searched for in the usual Googling fashion. The Junior Library has retained a master file of most pamphlets which can be photocopied and at present may be the easiest way to access these resources. The Senior Library staff are gradually scanning them onto Moodle but this will take a while. Youth Parliament ReportThe YMCA NSW Youth Parliament program saw 90 like-minded youth dawn upon the hallowed chambers of NSW State Parliament house during the July holidays. From as far north as Tweed Head to as far south as Albury, representatives from across the state debated within the Legislative Assembly; something reserved for only the politicians themselves and participants of the NSW Youth Parliament program. Sydney High had two representatives at the program in 2009 with Matthew Wong (12) representing the electorate of Heffron and Samir Kinger (10) representing the electorate of Menai and as Leader of the Government. The program divides participants into differing portfolios and teams where the participants must develop a bill addressing an issue in that portfolio. Matthew was a part of the Industrial Relations team whose bill sought to standardize youth working hours to prevent the exploitation of young workers, whilst Samir was a representative of the Health team whose bill looked to establish an Indigenous Health Promotion Agency to redress the disparities in Indigenous Health. The YMCA NSW Youth Parliament program offers a platform for young people where politicians are willing to listen to the concerns of young people and their perceptions of the burning issues within the state. The bills that do pass the Youth Parliament are forwarded onto the relevant Ministers where they are taken into consideration. There have been instances in the past where Youth Parliament bills have been enacted by NSW State Parliament as actual legislation, such as the 2002 bill to establish a uniform age of consent.
The mix of recreational and social activities also ensures that the program is not ‘just
politics’ and we strongly recommend further Sydney High representation in future Youth
Parliament programs.
From the Canteen TeamOur aim at the Canteen is to provide a reasonably priced food service to the students and staff at High while generating an ongoing income stream for the P & C. This year that income totals $90,000 following the $60,000 donation presented to the P & C at last Wednesday's meeting. This record donation is the result of the hard work and dedication from our Canteen staff led by Karen and Tracey, the generosity of our large and vital family of Volunteers whose help enables the Canteen to offer a better range of homemade foods, the assistance from Prefects during recess and lunch and of course the strong patronage from our loyal customers - the students and staff. Thank you everyone for your important contribution to our school community through your generous support of the Canteen. We can never adequately compensate our Volunteers for the time they give us but we show our appreciation through gestures such as our monthly Thank You draws and our six monthly Major draws. Recently we were able to redeem our supplier reward points for an Ipod Touch. At our Canteen committee meeting last Friday, Dr Jaggar drew out the winner of this half yearly Major draw from a barrel of names of Volunteers who have helped at Canteen in the first two terms of this year. The winner of the Ipod Touch is Fabienne Ovadia (Eric Year 10). Congratulations, Fabienne!
I would like to take this opportunity to also thank my fellow Canteen committee members. In
particular, thanks go to Kate Price who, as treasurer, has the huge task of paying all the bills
and dealing with the other numerous financial issues of the Canteen. Once again, thank you and
well done everyone.
Volleyball Report
In spite of the absence of John Gim and Sam Wan the Seconds volleyball proved their superiority
against Newington once again with a straight sets win. Substitute player, James Vu was eager to
play his first match of the season, hitting fast middle balls directly over Newington’s
blocks. Outside hitter Ivan Li managed to play a strong game, avoiding Newington’s defence
with short cross-court shots. Congratulations to the team for another strong win.

Match Reports from last week
1st XV: In a great return to our home ground, McKay 1, the 1st XV put on a show worthy of our supporters. In a close game against St Joseph’s 3rds we ultimately went down in the final minutes to lose 19-16. With free-flowing rugby and an emphasis on territory we continued our run into form that sees every week a vast improvement on the last. With every player rising to the occasion of contesting a strong Joeys outfit we were unlucky not to finish with the win. From here we will look towards next week where we will be playing St Joseph’s 17A’s and continue searching for our deserving victory. Thank you for your continuing support.
15Bs: 15Bs lost 24-12. We started slowly conceding 3 early tries but good attack from our forwards resulted in a runaway try for Eric Li right before half time. We scored the 1st try in the second half thanks to some good captaincy and some cleverness by Jesse. But our ill-discipline and a sin-bin resulted in Joeys scoring 2 more tries.
14Bs: 14Bs 12 lost to Joeys 31. A large improvement from the 14Bs showed that they could string large amounts of phases together. However in defence the 14Bs allowed Joeys through too easily with some poor tackling. The 14Bs showed that they can play good rugby and with steady improvement can win games.
13Cs: On Saturday, 15th August, the 13Cs played against Joeys at Rushcutters Bay. Right after the Cs kick-off, Joeys scored a try straight up, followed by a beautiful conversion. Everyone on our team was disappointed, but we didn’t give up. The rest of the first half wasn’t so bad, with High only letting in 4 tries, an improvement compared to last week. We made some good tackles, but we still didn’t score. The second half was worse than the first, with High letting in 7 tries. By the end of the day, the Cs were exhausted and hurting, but we all had fun.
13Ds: The 13Ds played Joeys, a formidable opponent, but showing much improvement from their first game. The tackling had improved significantly, and the team never gave up, which eventually led to two tries. Congratulations on a great effort by the entire team, and an extra congratulations to Pinyan Gao and Bevan Xie who managed to score their first tries of the season. Overall, a good job.

Match Reports
1st XI v King’s Drew 1-1
2nd XI v King’s Lost 1-4
With high hopes after our best preparation for the season, the High 2nd XI was out played by a
strong Kings outfit. An uneven pitch made it difficult to control the ball and High struggled to
maintain possession for any great length of time. One bright light for the 2nd XI came from Ryan
Caetano who showed strength and skill to burst his way through the King’s defence and
neatly slot past the keeper into the net.
16Cs v King’s Lost 0-3
Playing away from home, and against King’s was always going to be a tough task but due to
our own defensive errors, King’s won comfortably. Both sides used their defenders to their
maximum potential as clearing up the field became a regular practice. It looked much like a
tennis match as the midfield watched on and contributed little, with both teams jockeying for
possession. As the game wore on, the game expanded into the midfield with King’s
capitalising twice before the break when communication mishaps quelled any chance of pegging it
back.
The second half saw a steely High midfield battle it out to present ourselves with a chance. L
Sheldon and A Mokdad tried their hearts out to level the scores but unfortunately came up short.
Throughout the game, we made some breaks down the right flank but we were further disheartened by
another lucky goal. Although the game ended with a loss of three-nil, it did not accurately
depict the balance of the sides and even contest. This was our first loss of the season but we
still remain an outfit to be reckoned with.

15Ds v King’s Drew 1-1
The 15Ds started strongly but missed some early chances due to King’s defence. The opening
minutes saw the ball mainly in the opposition’s half but they counter-attacked but we
stayed calm and did not let them have a shot at goal. When they eventually got a chance at goal
it was saved beautifully by Brandon. At the end of the first half both teams were goalless. High
started the second half well but could not get a shot in. Both teams were tiring and the
opposition’s strikers managed to score the first goal of the game. With only five minutes
remaining until full time, High was more determined than ever to score the equaliser. Some rushed
shots saw the ball fly over the upright. Eventually a brilliant shot from Branavan, over the
keeper saw High draw the game.
13Cs v King’s Drew 1-1
The 13Cs kicked off with 'High' spirits following their victory last week against Riverview.
However, an experienced and coordinated strike from King’s saw an early goal. As the match
heated up, consistent saves from Eric Yu (13Es) kept the score at 1-0 in favour of King’s
at half time. Following a drink break and several hints and tips, the boys returned to the field
with determination in their eyes and a clear resolve to fight back. King’s were quicker,
bigger and stronger. However, a solid defence line guided by captain David Evans rendered future
attacks useless. With 10 minutes to go the 13Cs were eager to equalise and the opportunity
finally presented with centre mid Andrew Cheung boasting a fantastic shot at goal. The boys
finished off proudly with a 1-1 draw.
