Wireless fibre installed Students and parents should not expect that using laptops will change immediately the way teaching and learning occur at High. Syllabuses, programs, units of work and assessment strategies will gradually reflect the increased capabilities of students to research, retrieve, manipulate and present information. Newly created resources, strategies and approaches to concept and skill development have to be tested and piloted before widespread changes can be attempted. We ask for your patience and understanding as the staff and the students explore the possibilities of the technology available.

FINDING THINGS IN LIBRARIES IS JUST LIKE GOOGLING HUGE THANKS to Dr Paul Ganderton who has once again donated over $1000 worth of Social Science books which will mainly support his HSC Course - Environmental Science. Science students doing HSC Biology and Geography students all years need to be aware that the Andrews Library collection of Geography resources is now excellent as a result of continuous donations over several years. If you wish to see the entire Social Science collection to see if there is anything useful to you, just put in the search term Social Science into the OASIS database catalogue and the whole collection will list for you. HSC STUDENTS PLEASE NOTE: the Andrews Library has just finished processing HSC English Study Guide – Frontline. This will immediately be sent to the Senior Library and will be available for loan. Anyone who is studying HSC Environmental Science can access the huge amount of material for this course donated by Dr Ganderton in the Andrews (Book) Library. HSC Biology students may also find this donated collection very useful. New books out in Andrews Library this week

From the Canteen TeamAs some of you may have discovered, we have a new pide supplier. So we have chicken, beef, spinach pides again at the new price of $2.60. We know how busy life can be for today’s parents, which is why we’d especially like to thank our loyal volunteers for their contribution to the smooth running of the canteen. Volunteer help is vital to ensure healthy food for our boys and an ongoing income stream to the P&C for allocation to worthy school projects. We’d like to say thank you by rewarding our volunteers with the chance to win a $10 Canteen voucher for their sons. All volunteers have to do is turn up for duty as usual and sign the duty roster book. A draw is held each month for the lucky voucher winner. . Our June thank you voucher has been won by Michelle Dickson-Garay (Jasper, Year 9). Thank you Michelle for your reliable help and support at the canteen. To all our other current wonderful volunteers...THANK YOU! As the school year progresses, we often find work situations of our volunteers can change. It is a huge help to the Canteen staff if you can use the Roster to find someone to swap with and advise staff of the change if you cannot make it on your rostered day. Some volunteers however are forced to drop out entirely, due to pressures of work, so we are in constant need of new Volunteers. If you have never tried Canteen duty before, it is never too late to put up your hand. Just ring the Canteen and offer your services! The direct number for Canteen is 9360 4027. On Thursday 6 August Christopher Chiam and Khusshal Vyas participated in the Local Final of the
Legacy Junior Public Speaking Award at Sydney Girls High School. In a Local Final which more
closely resembled a Regional, Christopher and Khusshal delivered insightful and entertaining
speeches. We congratulate them on this impressive effort. Good luck to Khusshal who won a place
in the Regional Final which will take place in the coming weeks. We wish him the best of luck in
this prestigious and highly competitive competition.
Student report-Local Finals of Legacy Public Speaking In the Legacy Public Speaking Competition, we were able to choose any topic and talk on it for five minutes. After that there was an impromptu section in which we had five minutes to prepare a two minute speech. There were competitors from Year 7 to Year 10! This local final was of high quality. VERY HIGH QUALITY! Each speaker had very meaningful speeches which included humour as well. But the impromptu speeches were so impressive! Each competitor talked about issues really influencing our modern day society which kept each member of the audience listening. The adjudicator took quite a while to choose the winner. Each person had a great chance of winning, it was so very tight! But after about ten minutes of waiting I was announced as one of the winners. Chris Chiam from Year 9 also delivered outstanding speeches!
I am now preparing for the regional final which will be held in the near future. Till then
it’s practice, practice, practice!

Match Reports from last week:
1st XV
High 1st XV played an exciting and tightly fought game on the impressive new Shore home ground.
In the end we went down 19 - 12, yet showed great improvement from previous encounters, and were
able to sustain a competitive attitude for the full game. The skill level was high, and tries
were scored by Jonah Petrie and Michael Ambrose.
15Bs
15Bs lost to Shore 32-7. The team had high confidence coming into this match with a win in the
previous match. A poor start by us resulted in an easy try to the opponents. Good defence held
their forwards from scoring tries but when the opposition spread the ball out we didn't have an
answer for a while. When we had the ball we could not seize the opportunity. A late try by Eric
Li proved to be a consolation - too little too late.
14As
The 14As came up with a convincing 33 to 0 win over Shore 14Bs on Saturday, with a great team
effort in both offence and defence. With continued improvement the 14As can be competitive at an
A grade level.
14Bs
Loss to Shore 29 – 0. The scoreboard did not tell how closely the teams were matched.
However, some lax defence and lack of communication gave Shore some easy tries. The 14Bs need
everyone to attend training to ensure that they are well prepared for each match.
13Ds
Sydney High 13Ds played Shore away. The 13Ds started off well but dropped to a 40 point deficit
at half time. Fortunately, the Ds showed vast improvement in the 2nd half making strong tackles
and limiting the opposition to 28 points for the 2nd half. Everyone had a great game and enjoyed
themselves.

SHS Sailing: High Tide
Connor Robinson , Ennes Mehmedbasic won the Australian Secondary Schools ‘Pacer’ Class Sailing Championships Perpetual Trophy (Joint Coal Board) at the Belmont Sailing Regatta.
SBHS Sailing has been awarded this trophy in 2002 (L Francis, O Pickles) 2003 (O Pickles, E Blaxell), 2004 (C Halls, P Kurts), 2005 (P Kurts, A. Jurisevic), 2006 (B Leung. T Davenport), 2007 (N Slinko, A Rudder) and now 2009 (C Robinson, E Mehmedbasic) in their boat- Phillida Fish -come check out the Trophy in the main office.

A selected group of the Sydney Boys Sailing Squad competed at the NSW Secondary Schools Teams Racing over three days in May at Rose Bay.
The SBHS Sailors included: Yr 7 Feng, Daniel, Yr 8 Robinson, Connor, James, Marcus, Yr 9 Bart Daniels, Ceh, Adam, Ennes Mehmedbasic, Matthew Delaney Yr 12 Richards, Adam, Phillip Kurts
Participation of the boys at the 3 day Regatta was made possible by Adam South who gave SBHS a base on his small yacht for the day so it was possible for the boys to quickly change teams between races as well as giving teachers, coach, parents and fellow teams mates a close view of the racing. The Sailing Dinner this year was another great success – thank you to the committee for the organisation.
SBHS Sailing has found itself a new home this year at the Double Bay Sailing Club. We look
forward to inviting parents and friends of SBHS Sailing to come along and see the new facilities
and storage.

Dolan Cup, Golden boot and Golden Gloves
With the GPS season underway all teams need to register with the MIC the following team details.
Their team captain’s name and the goal keeper’s name. After each GPS match the
captain will be responsible for forwarding on the result of their game, including the names of
any goal scorers, to the MIC by Monday afternoon.
Progress tables for Golden Gloves and Dolan Cup competitions are not available as many results have not been received. To be eligible for any of these major football awards, a complete record of all GPS matches for your team must be given to the MIC Football.

Match Reports
1st XI v Riverview Lost 1-3
The build up to this match involved trepidation mixed with patchy knowledge of the stern task
ahead in St Ignatius. A top of the table clash at the home of High football (McKay 1) laid the
foundation for a mouth watering clash between the who’s who of football in the GPS
(Ignatius had 8 combined GPS representatives in addition to the convenor of the GPS Football
program) and a solid High outfit that continues to perform well against any opposition. High
dominated the early parts of the match with its slick two touch passing game and resolute defence
across the paddock. Some neat layoffs from striker Sam Higgins and quick passing on the angle
from Harrison Lane and Jarrod Chan caused all sorts of problems for the tall but slow Ignatius
defenders. We were unfortunate, however, to concede an early goal where an inability to clear the
ball saw the Ignatius striker pounce and convert an easy chance. Importantly, we were able to
bounce back both physically and mentally – a testament to the positive mentality and
willingness to never give in amongst the group – when Nick Dimitropoulus converted a
penalty midway through the first half. We continued to play inspired football for the remainder
of the half going into the break at 1-1. The second half proved an extraordinary challenge
playing into the wind and with Ignatius pressing hard for another goal. We created a multitude of
chances that if converted would have placed extraordinary pressure on Iggies. Josh Sutton –
one of the most improved players of the season thus far – had a phenomenal game in goal,
with close to 30 possessions and countless last ditch saves (not to mention a flawless
performance with his goal kicks). While High continued to play simple, free flowing football,
Iggies converted a sharp cross from a corner which put them ahead 2-1. High continued to fight
for an equaliser - which would have been a fair result based on our execution of the game plan
and the way we knocked the ball around - but again, an inability to convert chances cost the side
on the scoresheet. Iggies put away a third goal in the dying minutes to win 3-1. A really
impressive effort from High’s 1st grade squad with all people involved contributing to a
solid team performance.
2nd XI v Riverview Lost 1-2
Facing a strong Riverview team, Sydney High 2nd XI started shakily, being found out by
Riverview’s up tempo play and lateral ball movement. Pleasingly, High readjusted to counter
Riverview’s tactics and dominated the later part of the first half and scored the first
goal of the match and led 1 nil at half time. Facing a stiff breeze, High’s defence, led by
captain Jacky Chen, were under constant pressure throughout the second stanza and held on bravely
until Riverview jagged two late goals to snatch the game. Goal scorer for High was substitute
Jeremy Rajendram.
16Cs v Riverview Drew 0-0
Coming off last week’s comfortable win against St. Joseph’s, High faced a highly
skilled and sleek Riverview outfit. From the kickoff, we were entrenched in our own half with
only a number of breaks toward goal. As neither side could seize the initiative and gain the
momentum, defensive tactics were essential to keeping a clean sheet. At the half time break, both
teams remained goalless and we went off knowing we had a tough task ahead of us. The second half
started with a severe push down the right flank from St Ignatius and they capitalised on their
territory by taking several shots at goal. Resisting the advance toward goal, our defence muscled
its way back into the game. Special commendations must go to M Rozsa and V Sethi for providing an
unyielding defence down the centre corridor. Also, A Mokdad played brilliantly on the left flank,
presenting the few breaks down the wing. L Sheldon, the goalkeeper has retained another clean
sheet, among a barrage of late shots from St Ignatius. Although, the nil-all score line does not
reflect the streaks of talent in the match, it proves we hauled out a great defensive effort and
clearly are a competitive force in the GPS.

13Cs v Riverview Won 1-0
As the 13Cs walked onto the field the coach and the team had doubts about winning. The first half
was tough as their attack was very strong. Riverview continually applied pressure, but a fast
break and errors from the opposition saw Michael Yu score the first goal of the game. The second
half was filled with tension as a determined Riverview team fought to equalise. They posed many
threats with a lot of shots, but our solid HIGH defence line would not falter. When the full time
whistle blew everyone cheered. The first victory for the 13Cs 1-0.
