High Talent At the NSW All Schools Cross Country meet this week the depth of High talent in athletics was again displayed. In the 17 years teams event, High placed second, with Harrison Lane (13) and Jeremy Ireland (31), contributing to the victory of Sydney East region in the inter regional teams event. Lachlan Perris, Alasdair Brown and David Chan were our other runners. In the 15 years team event, High ran third, with Adam Booth (20) and Jeremy Dobrowolski (44) contributing to Sydney East’s third place in the inter regional section. Pasan Pannila and Alexander Hughes made up the team of four. In the 14 years team event, High ran third, with Lloyd Perris (11), Vincent Ye, Oliver Kirk and Siddarth Sethi making up the team.

Human Swine Flu InformationDepartment of Education and Training: Human Swine Flu Information Sheet This year it is likely many more people will come down with flu‐like illnesses than in recent flu seasons because few people have immunity to the human swine flu virus. As the number of cases of flu increases, we all need to take steps to minimise the transmission of the virus in school communities as some staff and students are at greater risk of severe illness from flu. Staff or students who become unwell should stay away from school until they are well to minimise the transmission of the flu. Any student who identifies that they are unwell, or is displaying flu‐like symptoms at school will be sent to a sick‐bay area and their parent or carer will be called to take them home. Please watch carefully for any signs or symptoms of flu‐like illness in your child. If they are unwell please do not send them to school until their symptoms have gone. These symptoms include fever, cough, tiredness, muscle aches, sore throat, chills or shortness of breath. Some people are more likely to develop severe illness from both seasonal influenza and swine flu. NSW Health advises that this group includes people who:
If you or your child is in one of these categories, please seek urgent medical attention as soon as symptoms of flu appear because you may need anti-influenza medication and it works best if given early. The department has policies in place to support schools this flu season. I can assure you that the department will continue to act on all advice received from NSW Health to ensure the health, safety and wellbeing of our staff and students. GPS Round 1
GPS Round 2 THIS WEEK we are against St Ignatius College Riverview. Each A team and B2 team is debating and we are able to run additional debates for years 7 & 8 which is fantastic and I look forward to chatting more about the debates during supper! The topic area is Current Affairs so ALL BOYS should be keeping up to date with news via the internet, television, radio and a variety of newspapers.
SGHS Invitational The topics debated were: Years 7 and 8: That limited physical punishment should be available to schools Year 9 and 10: That obese children should be removed from their parents Seniors: That Australia should only commit to carbon emission reduction targets that both China and India agree to.

SBHS Football DinnerThe 2009 SBHS Football Dinner SBHS Football will celebrate the efforts and achievements of our boys as well as acknowledge staff, coaches and supporters at the SBHS Football dinner on Thursday 10th September 2009 The coach of each team will be invited to attend the dinner as a guest. Players are asked to take responsibility on a team-by-team basis for any end-of-season gifts to their team’s coach.
The dinner will be held on The cost of the dinner will be $30 per adult and student. For children under 11 yrs old there is a special rate of $20. Rowing Committee Annual General Meeting
Date: Tuesday 25th August 2009 Come and meet our new Rowing MIC, Simon Hoadley, and be part of planning for the upcoming season. Rowing is a great sport that High provides for our boys. It also relies on parents to help facilitate the program, and, as with any sport, always needs new parents becoming involved. All parents of rowing students are encouraged to attend the annual general meeting. All Office Bearer positions will be declared vacant and available for nomination and election. I hope you can attend and become involved in your son's sport.

Volleyball Report
Metro Schools Volleyball Tournament First Grade Report Although the team was struck by an injury crisis, resulting in Joshua Suh and Merlin Li being out of the tournament altogether, as well as Chris Morrow, Nelson Wang, Ritam and Nishan performing at nowhere near 100%, the team responded well to this adversity due to the flexibility of the side. The team opened up with a less-than-convincing win against Rooty Hill; however, once again Balraj’s consistency at the start of the day proved the difference, as High built some momentum towards the end of the game, coming into a game following immediately after, against Holsworthy. Here High cruised to a 20-6 lead, due mainly to a strong blocking display by the middles Chris and Nelson. Chris was at this stage forced to spike with his left hand – but it didn’t really matter, as he hit from a height where such small things are inconsequential. Following a very convincing second set, the team rode high on confidence coming into the Cherrybrook game, where we faced possibly the strongest team in our pool. This confidence was crucial, after they took a big lead on the back of some serving errors on High’s part – the team remedied the situation, and once again proved their previously unseen mettle in tight situations, sneaking away the set from Cherrybrook 25-22 after trailing by over 6 points throughout the match. The semi final saw a sporting allowance by High, to let a state player from Menai play for Westfields Sports High. Rather than making the game closer, the team lifted to an intensity level more appropriate for an honours team – winning the set 25-9 with some great sets by Stephen Dong and passing by fill-in libero Patrick Lai. Shorson Zhang was brutal from the right side, and High cruised into yet another state schools cup final. The final against Muirfields was a more subdued effort by the team – perhaps believing the previous match was more suited to a final, the team found itself under the pump trailing 12-6 in the first set. However, once again High lifted another gear and with some quick sets going to the outside, High drew first blood in the match – literally. Chris Morrow slammed a ball into the face of an opposing player below him, incidentally the very same player who found himself with a bleeding nose due to a Shorson hit in the previous tournament. This lifted the team, who took out the set and then the match in convincing fashion.

Second Grade Volleyball Report
GPS Rifle Shooting ReportThe sun glares into your eyes as you walk down to the mound. Laying down your mat, rifle, bolt and ammunition, you watch as your fellow shooters, from across the range to right next to you, are immersed in their own processes, you are invisible to them. You sink your elbow in, the mound depresses, and you look back to see your team, coaches and parents, knowing their hopes rest on your steadiness and concentration. Gun in hand, you settle into position, shuffling almost every part of your body imaginable to centre the aiming point. The target, never less than 300m away, stares at you imposingly; can you hit it? The scorer yells out your position, then, “When you’re ready Sydney High”, and it’s on. Shot alignment, trigger squeeze, release, reload, and it’s all under that overwhelming pressure of competition, of the possibility of a win. The last competition of the year and the end of the season, the GPS Competition, displayed all of the above hardships and processes that define the sport of Rifle Shooting, and it was in Sydney High’s firm control of nerves and perfectly timed displaying of skill that the team came home with their first Premiership in six years. Directly preceded by the well organised and successful five day Training Camp in the second week of the holidays and a decisive victory in the All Schools Competition the Saturday beforehand, we again rose for an early start on Monday the 27th of July 2009 for the first day of the GPS Competition, the practice day. After an eventful bus trip, we were greeted by the sight of the enclosed Hornsby Rifle Range, wet with mud after Sunday’s downpour. Unloading our gear onto a tarp whilst carefully avoiding the many puddles and bogs of mud, it was still a determined group of boys that prepared themselves to shoot. Results were high all around as we acclimatised ourselves to the range, a welcome change from windy Malabar, and the day ended on high hopes of the coveted premiership. Tuesday the 28th of the July was the first day of the competition and we rose just as early as yesterday to get to the range on time. The day would begin with the Rawson Cup, two 7 shot matches each at 500m and 600m, then after a break for lunch, the NRA Shield, a 10 shot match at 600m. Up against SHORE, Kings, Grammar, Scots, TAS and NEGS, we were all determined to do well and each of us immersed ourselves in our pre-shoot rituals. Classical music, rock music, sleeping, breathing exercises and confident exteriors were utilised and clearly displayed as the Rawson Cup progressed. The first match at 500m yielded an excellent result, with no shooter dropping below a score of 33 out of 35, and Matthew Tong scoring a perfect score of 35 out of 35, with one centre. However, the 600m range did not end as well. Wind and nerves took over as we degraded into sub 32 scores, and we had to be content with a third place finish, narrowly beaten by King’s and SHORE. Lunch however, renewed our determination to win. The NRA Shield was evidently much more successful, with high scores all around the board resulting in our achieving first place! Special mention must go to Ryan Woo for his phenomenal score of a perfect 50 out of 50 with 7 centres, the top score of the day. Seated in first place, the 1st Grade Team relaxed on the morning of Wednesday the 29th of July to watch the 2nd Grade team compete. This match consisted again of two 7 shot matches, but at 500m and 300m. In most of the competitors’ first ever GPS Competition, the team performed admirably at the first 500m range, with Abraham Chan scoring a 34 out of 35 with 3 centres, unlucky to drop his last shot. However, just as 1st Grade had done yesterday, the team’s nerves overcame them in the second 300m match. Despite the 4th placing, the shoot still yielded some excellent results, with Andy Xie scoring a perfect score of 35 out of 35 with 2 centres, a wonderful effort considering it was his first GPS competition. The afternoon however, would consist of the decider for the 1st Grade premiership. The Buchanan Shield was an unpredictable match which anyone could win, not so much because of the 8 shot match at 300m, but more the snap shoot, also known as “rapid fire”. With 8 shots being fired at 10 second intervals from each other on a target half the size of the regulation 300m target, it was the match where many competitors lost out, but Sydney High was determined to overcome it and win. The 300m match again yielded some excellent results, and we were well in the running to take out the premiership going into the snap. As our coaches often repeated to us, “if you got all the shots onto the target, you would easily win”. After a brief but energetic discussion on the bus, we headed out onto the range, some of us for the last time, to prepare for the shoot-off. With rifles going off like cannons every few seconds, it was a surreal sight, but even more beautiful was our results. With two perfect scores of 40 out of 40 by Matthew Tong and John Aclis, a 39 out of 40 by Ryan Woo and two 38 out of 40s by Nevin Spoljaric and Denis Stojanovic, we had definitively won ourselves the premiership jointly with King’s School, falling short by one mere centre on taking the premiership all for ourselves. Despite the Co-Premeirship status, we were still elated to have won Sydney High our first premiership in 6 years. It was a beautiful way to end the season and, for some of us, our shooting careers at High. The presentation yielded some great photos, an initial dilemma over who gets the premiership shield first, and some more good news. Ryan Woo, Matthew Tong and Nevin Spoljaric were each named in the Combined GPS First Grade Team of 2009, with Matthew Tong named as the Captain of the squad. The evening party with TAS and NEGS only further allowed us to let out our pride and joy at the great results whilst expressing our thanks to everyone who made it possible. Although it consisted of a few mishaps, from early ravagings of the food to the unforgivable sight of forgetting the NEGS captain’s name (punished by push-ups), it was still a wonderful continuation of the ongoing bond between the three schools, and a great way to end the shooting season. On behalf of all the Sydney High Shooters of 2009, I would like to extend my utmost appreciation to a number of people who made this historic premiership possible. Thanks to Justin Hill and Kevin Chan, our two Old Boy coaches, for preparing us for the big competition. Thanks to Joe Banh and Ishan Nadkarni who decided to come back and coach despite their university commitments. Thanks to our MIC Cathy Meaney for taking up her position and her tireless efforts to make the sport more enjoyable and comfortable for everyone involved. Thanks to the many Old Boy supporters who turned up to cheer us on in the home stretch, John Fraser (1933), Sam Kremer (1992),Kevin Chan (2000), coach, Tom Vogelgesang (member of the 1998 Premiership team), David Jacques (member of 1998 & 2001 Premiership teams), Justin Hill (member of the 2001 Premiership team), coach, Daniel Comben (member of the 2003 Premiership team), Chris Budd (member of the 2003 Premiership team), Joe Banh (2006),asst. coach and Ishan Nadkarni (2008), asst coach.
Thanks to our loving parents, who fed us, hydrated us and comforted us throughout the intense
three days of competition, making it just that more enjoyable and comfortable for us. And finally
thanks must go to my fellow shooters of the Sydney High Rifle Club. Throughout the year we have
gone to countless early Saturday morning training sessions at Malabar and competitions out to
places in the country we had never heard of before, and I must say that I have found no tighter
group of joyful, funny and friendly guys in all my years at Sydney High. It is with great sadness
that I look back at the happy times I had with you all, and I can safely say that I have been
proud to be your captain for 2009.
