From the Deputy Principal

Term 3
Welcome back to students, staff and parents. There have been some changes to staffing for Term 3. Mr John Beringer (Deputy Principal) retired at the end of Term 2 after 39 years and 6 months distinguished service for the NSW Department of Education and Training. Mr Beringer was appointed to High at the beginning of Term 2 1999 after serving in a variety of schools: Narwee Boys High School, Picnic Point High School, Cabramatta High School, Kirrawee High School, James Cook Boys High School (HT English) and Randwick Boys High School (DP). We have benefited greatly from his talents and ability over the last 10 years and wish him well in his retirement. Mr Con Barris will fill the role of Acting Deputy Principal for the remainder of 2009. Ms Betsy Berger will fill the role of Relieving HT History and Ms Jane Miller will join the History staff for the rest of the year. Mr Malcolm Carson (Industrial Arts) has accepted an appointment at Glenmore Park High School. This will reduce significantly his travel time from home to school. He has been replaced for the remainder of the year by Ms Dinah Eadie. Mr Brian Webb (Science) will be on leave for Term 3. His classes will be taken by Mr Terry Russell (Years 11 and 12 Physics) and Ms Robyn O’Driscoll (Years 8-10). Ms Monica Morscheck will leave the role of Senior Librarian at the end of this week. She has accepted an appointment in Thailand.

High Talent
Congratulations to the GPS Rifleshooting team who have had a number of significant accomplishments in the last week. They were victorious in the NSW All Schools Competition last Saturday. Brendan Leo (Year 10) was named as King of the Range. On Tuesday morning they came third in the Rawson Cup; on Tuesday afternoon they won the NRA Shield; on Wednesday afternoon they came second in the Buchanan Shield. They have secured the title of Joint GPS Premiers (with The King’s School). Well done to all concerned.

Train Travel Problem
We were disappointed to receive a call from a member of the public indicating that one of our boys remained seated on a North Shore Line train this week while adults were standing. A reminder that one of the conditions attached to the Free Travel tickets supplied indicates that students can occupy “a seat only when all fare paying passengers have seating.” Please do not wait to be asked to vacate a seat.

Immunisation Program 2009

Vaccinations for Years 7 and 10 students will take place on Friday 7 August when a team of specially trained registered nurses will be visiting the school.

In 2009 the following vaccines will be offered to Year 7 students only -

• Hepatitis B - the first of two doses. The second will be administered on 11 December. It is very important that any boy who receives the first dose of Hepatitis B vaccine completes the course with the second dose in December
• Varicella [chickenpox]

In 2009 the following vaccine will be offered to Year 10 students only -

• Diphtheria, Tetanus and Pertussis (whooping cough)

Boys in Years 7 and 10 have been issued with a parent information kit. If you would like your son to be vaccinated, please complete the Consent Form/s in the kit and return completed forms to the collection boxes in the Main Office. Alternatively, boys can bring the form with them on Friday 7th.

Boys who do not bring the completed consent forms will not be able to take advantage of this free service

After the boys have been vaccinated they will be given a Record of Vaccination to take home so that you can keep their immunisation records up to date.

Year 7 students who are absent from the first vaccination clinic are entitled to receive a free course of Hepatitis B vaccine from their GP.

Year 10 students who are absent from the first vaccination clinic will be offered the Diphtheria, Tetanus and Pertussis (whooping cough) vaccine at the second clinic on 11 December.

Volleyball Knockout Win

High won the CHS Volleyball knockout at the end of last term, defeating Airds HS in the final held at Olympic Park.

It was a good performance from the team which was not at full strength due to illness. In the round of 16 the boys limped home to defeat Nowra in a close game then went on the beat Pennant Hills and Great Lakes in the quarter and semi finals.

The final against Airds was a closer match than the 3-0 score suggests but the team was strengthening as the flu symptoms abated and held on to close the match under some pressure from Airds.

The team consisted of Ritam Mitra (captain), Shorson Zhang, Stephen Dong , Balraj Ougra, Daniel Shan, Merlin Li, Nelson Wang, Chris Morrow, Josh Suh, Jonathon Mok and Nishan Abeysuriya.

Friday Tournament
1st Grade, 2nd Grade and the 16As will be competing at Olympic Park this Friday in the second qualifier for the National Schools Volleyball week held in Melbourne in December.

GPS Volleyball continues this Saturday against Newington (at Newington).

Ski Trip Report

Our Ski Team returned safely from the Snowy Mountains last Sunday after exhilarating and successful racing and free skiing experiences at Thredbo and Perisher Blue over the holiday period.

Outstanding individual and team accomplishments included:

• Our Cross Country Team - Sam Lane, Tom Connolly, Brendan Hancock and Tim Collier - achieving stunning performances in their events and winning selection in NSW Championships to be held at the end of August.
• Year Seven racers - Perry Sim and Josh Lane - competing bravely and gaining valuable experience for the future
• Our school being placed second in overall points tally in Category Two schools (those with teams of less than 25 members )

General behaviour and conduct of boys during the trip was excellent.

I thank all boys, The Committee, all parent volunteers and other helpers for their involvement in the success of our venture this year. I also thank Mr Andrew Fuller and Team Captain, Roy Chen, for their invaluable assistance.

Old Boy Jason Phu, currently in his 2nd year at COFA majoring in printmaking has a group show on at Kudos Gallery Paddington for a short time. He was recently selected to be hung in the Waverley Art Prize . He has been selected to spend this semester in Canada as an exchange art student.

Rifle Shooting Trip to Cessnock: Report
With all the stress of our Half Yearly Exams/Year 12 Assessments finally out of the way, a dedicated group of the Sydney High Rifle Squad still endeavoured to wake up early on 12 July 2009 to go back up to the lush green landscape of the country and compete in our last Open Championship before the GPS Competition.

Grateful that the trip would only be two hours, Cessnock greeted us with a chilly temperature, foreboding grey sky and a happy array of country folk. Having recuperated from the early wake up call with a healthy dose of sleep on the bus, we walked out from the vehicle refreshed and ready to undergo the first part of our holiday training before the big competition, the GPS. Slapping on our extra jackets and prepping our gear and our mindsets, it was nevertheless with a happy, joyous feeling that we started off our brief stay in the country.

The first two ranges were both at 500 yards and the last range was at 600 yards. Throughout the day some great scores were posted up, with Michael Do sweeping the C grade competition (earning a spot in B Grade) and Brendan Leo and Johan Santoso picking up medals of their own. It was a mixed day but nevertheless an enjoyable one, with special mention going to Michael Do, Brendan Leo, Johan Santoso and Peter Tran for shooting new personal bests and Andy Xie for performing admirably in his first major competition.

The day ending with the presentation of the awards, it was again a joyous group of boys that re-entered the bus and headed back to school, indulging in a sugar fest. Thanks again must go to Justin Hill, Kevin Chan and Cathy Meaney for organising this wonderful trip up to the country and my fellow shooters, both from Sydney High and the multitude of separate clubs competing, who made the start of the holidays all the more enjoyable and relaxing, a great change from the arduous horrors of the HSC.

All Schools Rifle Shooting Championship Report
With the intensive training camp of the second week of the holidays behind us, the Sydney High Rifle Team of 2009 was primed and ready for the first schools competition of the year, the All Schools. Held at Malabar on 25 July 2009, we put up 3 teams of 5 to compete with Sydney Grammar, Shore, TAS, Scots and NEGS, hoping to come away with the coveted championship for the first time in many years.

We looked back nostalgically at the scores, burger runs, unfortunate incidents and late nights of the training camp as we woke up for another early morning on the day of the competition. Grateful that the sun had decided to grace us with its presence despite a deluge last Thursday in the camp, the three teams each prepared on the mound at 300m for the first range of the shoot. The All Schools Competition consisted of three matches of 10 counting shots, all out of 50, with the first range being at 300m, the second at 500m and the last at 600m. Our 3 teams of Sydney High Brown, White and Blue performed admirably on this first range, but it was the top team of Sydney High Brown that performed exceptionally at this range, quickly establishing their dominance with a combined score of 242 out of 250 with 17 centres.

With the wind gradually picking up from its warmly welcomed calm of the morning, the 14 competing teams moved back to the 500m mound in the next range of the match. Despite some unforseen distractions we all still managed to post some competitive scores. Sydney High Brown had a combined score of 237 out of 250 with 15 centres, with special mention going to Brendan Leo for scoring a perfect score of 50 out of 50 with 7 centres, a phenomenal effort. And last but not least was the 600m range. Furthest away from the target with the wind starting to do some more swirling and twirling, the three High teams yet again posted very competitive scores. With Sydney High Brown having posted a score of 235 out of 250 with 13 centres, we had taken out the championship, ahead of TAS by 20 points! We went up to accept the Fiona Reynolds Memorial Trophy with pride and joy, but that does not exclude the rest of the team. Sydney High White, the second team, posted a very competitive final aggregate of 674 out of 750 with 31 centres, only losing to Shore’s first team on centres. Sydney High Blue, the third team, achieved a fantastic 602 out of 750 with 14 centres, considering that half of the team had only started shooting this year, beating the other three third teams there. We were definitely ready for the GPS competition, and set out to enjoy our lovingly prepared afternoon barbeque, a rugby match (the most exercise we had had the whole holidays) and a long Sunday rest before the training day and the two final days of the Rifle Shooting Calendar.

Thanks must go to our coaches Justin Hill, Kevin Chan, Joe Banh and Ishan Nadkarni for preparing us for the upcoming competition, our success is indebted to these committed fellows. Thanks must also go to our MIC Cathy Meaney, the parents committee, the MDRA and the wonderful competitors of TAS, NEGS, Sydney Grammar, Scots and Shore for making the competition possible. It’s a great day out and we’ll be sure to come back next year!

Piano Competition
The SBSH Piano Competition is back again in its 4th year running. The competition will commence next week at lunchtimes in the Great Hall. Junior division (Yrs 7-9) will be on Monday & Tuesday (3rd-4th August) and Senior division (Yrs 10-12) will be on Monday & Tuesday (10th-11th Aug).

Performance time limit for Junior division is 3 mins and Senior division 5 mins.

ENTRY Fee is $5.00 made payable to the Music Staff. Please enrol ASAP.

Music Parking

SBHS Debating

Good Luck!
The GPS Season starts this evening with our boys going up against Joeys in Round 1. Bests of luck to all of our firsts and seconds debaters!

Please note that in the GPS competition Year 7, 8, 9 and 10 arrive at 5.45pm for prep from 6pm and debate commencing at 7pm. Senior Debates (firsts, seconds and thirds) must arrive at 6.45pm for prep at 7pm and debate at 8pm.

Good luck must also go to our Year 7 and 8 Boys as they contest the University of Sydney Debating Union Junior Debating Championship at the University of Sydney today - I know they will have a great day of debating and act as excellent representatives of SBHS.

Nikhil Autar and Samir Kinger are also participating in the University of Sydney Schools’ Model United Nations competition tomorrow. Once again at the University of Sydney, the boys will be negotiating on behalf of the United Kingdom on the UNESCO panel.

This is an urgent reminder for our next parking event. We need another 6 to 7 parents and boys for the night. As this is a working night, parents may be coming directly from work, so I would like to see some boys volunteer for the early shift.

Phillip Day Scholarship Dinner
All parents are warmly invited and indeed encouraged to attend the upcoming inaugural Phillip Day Scholarship dinner - Tuesday 8th September at 7.00pm in the Great Hall. The Phillip Day Scholarship is awarded each year to a highly talented student in a particular area of academic and/or co-curricular endeavour and /or an outstanding all round achiever. Congratulations to this year’s recipient, Alex Belokopytov. Alex will play his HSC piano performance major work at the Scholarship dinner - a fantastic opportunity to hear and see this young man’s incredible talent.

Joseph McIvor (Class of 2001) will deliver the keynote address entitled Capitalism and the Free Market are Dead. Joseph is currently undertaking PhD studies on why free markets will not work without regulation - a very topical area that should promote terrific discussion.

Gather together a table of fellow parents or we can place you on a table, to honour Alex Belokopytov and the memory of Phillip Day (Class of 1965). Tickets are available using the order form in this issue of High Notes.
