Eastern Suburbs Zone Athletics Tax deductible education expenses Dear School Principal I would like to thank you for your co-operation in helping ensure parents, carers, legal guardians and independent students were provided with key facts about the Education Tax Refund initiative. As the end of the financial year (30 June 2009) approaches, we would like to remind those eligible to make their Education Tax Refund claim. We also want to ensure that those eligible:
I would therefore again request that you include the key messages below in your school newsletter and/or any other appropriate notices you distribute to parents, carers, legal guardians or independent students, many of whom may be eligible to make a claim. To avoid any confusion, please insert the information below without making changes to the text. In addition, the Tax Office has prepared, specifically for schools, some frequently asked questions and answers. Education Tax Refund – Don't forget to claim
The Education Tax Refund lets you claim up to 50% of eligible education expenses for school children. If you are eligible, you can get back up to $375 for each primary student and up to $750 for each secondary student. You can claim things like text books, stationery and even internet costs. If you receive Family Tax Benefit Part A for a child at primary or secondary school, you will be eligible. Some other people are eligible too, to find out more about this and other information such as what you can and can't claim go to or call the Tax Office on 13 28 61. School Staff Selection Panel TrainingAt various times during the year the school is required to form selection panels to fill teaching and executive staff vacancies. The composition of these panels includes a school community member who must be trained in specific selection panel procedures. If you are interested in participating in this process and are prepared to undertake the two-hour training course, please register your interest with the Principal’s Assistant, Ms Lynne Williams on 9361 6910 Ext: 114 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Courses are also conducted at the Arncliffe office of the Sydney Region.

Education Access Scheme - HSC StudentsMost institutions that participate in the University Admissions Centre (UAC) have an Educational Access Scheme (EAS) for applicants who have experienced long term educational disadvantage. To qualify applicants must demonstrate that their educational performance during Years 11 and 12 or equivalent have been seriously affected by circumstances beyond their control. Students applying for the Educational Access Scheme (EAS) for Universities in 2010 can download their booklets and application forms from the website:
Students who require a Statement of Support from the school counsellor should make the counsellor
aware of their situation as soon as possible. The completed EAS form, along with all required
information and documentation, needs to be with the counsellor by the end of week 7, term 3. The
responsibility for sending the finalised application to UAC by 30th September 2009 rests with the
individual student.

Year 11 Parents MeetingThe Year 11 Parents Year Group will be holding a meeting on:
Date: Tuesday 30th June, 7.30pm Mr Steve Codey, the Year Adviser for our boys, has offered to come along and discuss with us the HSC subject choices for Year 12. Mr Codey has just recently attended an in-service with the Board of Studies on the HSC, assessments, special provisions etc . He will also have information on subject selection and the number of units boys should do for the HSC. I'm sure we will all find this very useful.

Rifle ShootingLast Saturday we held a BBQ and Open Day. We had approximately 50 people attend – Students, Coaches, Friends, Old Boys and Parents. Many tried Rifle Shooting for the first time and then joined us for a BBQ lunch. Unfortunately the weather was very unkind and the afternoon activities had to be cancelled.
Thank you to all the mums who helped out with the organisation of the BBQ and also to the dads
for the actual cooking. Everyone had a great time!
Volleyball ReportSydney High opened its 2009 GPS Volleyball season with a resounding straight sets victory over Scots. Although they were missing three of their four state representatives, the game was dominated throughout by High. The first set was a very quick affair, as High held Scots to a single digit while scoring 25 points themselves. Despite an initial lead from Scots, High soon found their range helped by some massive hits from Nishan. Fill in libero, Patrick Lai did a great job in the back court while Chris Morrow backed up from his NSW experience. The second and third sets saw similar starts with High experimenting with different combinations. Strong net presence by Daniel Shan ensured the point was High’s. High took the match out in straight sets – a great effort.
Results v Grammar
Sydney High continued its impressive 2009 run taking its unbeaten streak to 18 for the year
leading up to the CHS finals next week with a victory over Sydney Grammar. The round against
Grammar is traditionally the toughest and this match proved no exception with Grammar pushing
High to 4 sets. The players took a set or two to acclimatise to their new positions, including
Ritam Mitra as libero, Shorson as outside hitter, Daniel Shan as middle and Merlin Li as
universal. However, consistent hitting from Chris Morrow and Nishan led to High prevailing in the
first two sets. Grammar lifted their intensity to take out the third set but High secured victory
in the final set. Highlights included a Balraj barrage late in the game as well as Joshua Suh and
Nelson Wang consistently shutting out any form of attack.

Great appreciation must also go to the boys who served admirably as chairpeople and timekeepers for the competition. The evening would not have gone as smoothly as it did without them – topics announcements would have been a nightmare and visiting schools would not have found their rooms as easily as they did. These boys were a credit to the Debating Program and SBHS – thank you boys! Ashwin Rudder, Sunchit Sethi, Steven Chung, Andrew Liu, Samir Kinger, Daniel Fang, Adam Ceh, Yuan Shi, Andre Brokman, Nathan Kong, Siddharth Sethi and Jaan Pallandi. Sincere (and tasty) thanks must go as always to Supper Coordinator Irene Ben and her team of parents for delivering yet another delicious and diverse supper. Once again it is a credit to our parents that we are able to put on such a welcoming display for our visitors.
