High Talent
Balraj Ougra (Year 12) has been selected in the U-19 NSW Volleyball team to play at the Australian Junior Championships in Queensland in July. Well done, Balraj! Congratulations to our team of rifle shooters who competed at Wingham last weekend. In C grade, Brendan Leo (Year 10) was 2nd and Ryan Woo placed 3rd Matthew Tong placed 5th in B grade. The boys shot well in open company.

Train Travel Compliments
I received this email from a train traveller this week. "I am writing to you to compliment you on the behaviour of some of your students who regularly travel on the Northern railway line through Epping (where I embark on my way to work). I frequently see a group of your boys in the end section of the compartment in which I travel, and they always give up their seats for adults. I suppose I took this a bit for granted until this week when I travelled on a later train and had to ask a boy from another school to give me his seat. He had been quite obviously avoiding making eye contact, and I hesitated to say anything, but then decided I would. It contrasted clearly with what I was used to experiencing, and that is why I thought you might like to know that the boys are excellent ambassadors of your school (and of their families, of course)." It is heartening to know that our boys behave themselves so well on public transport when they are not being supervised. It is also nice to know that commuters out there appreciate their behaviour and care enough to write to us to acknowledge it.

The UAI has been Replaced by ATAR
From this month the University Admission Index (UAI) will be replaced by the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR). The highest possible ranking will now be 99.95. The ATAR will indicate a student's position in relation to the Year 7 students they began high school with, as opposed to only those students still at school in Year 12, as in the current system using only those students as a 'reference cohort'. The ATAR rules will be exactly the same as the UAI rules. Marks will be scaled using the same processes so the rank order of students will be the same. Letters will be sent to Year 12 students. Winter Uniform
Staff and students are reminded that High is a full uniform school. Sweaters and jackets are appearing that are not part of the school uniform. Non-school uniform items should not be worn to school. We have blazers, beanies and sweaters for sale at the High Store to protect you in cold weather. You may wear white skivvies under your school shirt with your tie done up to disguise the extra apparel. Please do not allow your standards to slip in sympathy with the slide in degrees Celsius.

Australian Sports Foundation Donations
Parents wishing to contribute to one of the school's many tax deductible Australian Sports Foundation Projects – from sailing boats to sports museum memorabilia, or rowing facilities to rifles, the ASF advises that for this financial year, cheques need to be deposited and credit cards processed by June 30.

Electrical Substation Contractor Appointed
The contractor came on Wednesday to finalise site location plans for the substation, cable and electrical switchboard. Work schedules will be drawn up soon but the construction may take some time.

Game 1 of the Australian Schools Share market Game was highly successful and enjoyable for High students this year. Sydney High had 134 syndicates, of between one and four students competing in this national competition. 90% of our syndicates finished the Game with their portfolios in profit. Over the eight week period in which the game was conducted, there had been a lot of volatility and uncertainty in the market. Over 40,000 students participate nationally in this year's game. The ASX Share Market Game has become an integral part of out Commerce Program and it is keenly contested by Senior Economics and Business Studies students, although once again Yr 9 and Yr 10 Commerce students outperformed their senior colleagues. The national winner finished with $99,841 and the leading NSW syndicate, $87,106. Congratulations to Andy Ho Yr 10 who came 7th nationally and 3rd in NSW with a total of $86,398, for which he receives a cheque for $250 and a trophy. This prize will be presented to Andy at an upcoming school Assembly.

Strategies

Andy Ho. (Deathalicious)
" I was careful to select shares with the most potential for growth in a short period. A good example of this was 'Bradken'. These shares had been around $11 five months earlier and their share price had dropped to around $1. Therefore, if they reached $2 for example, I would achieve 100% growth. The best tool that I used was the Share graphs, showing their price over recent months. Using these graphs I could also gauge whether the share was in a recovery phase, or whether the trend was still heading downwards. After I had selected the five most suitable stocks, I then purchased close to the maximum allowance of each. I regularly monitored the performance of each of the stocks, versus the performance of the All Ords and other shares in the Game. Fortunately all of my shares were showing reasonable growth."

Adrian Zhang (Dizzy Spells)
"The strategy we used was to buy shares that were low in cost, like Bradken, Gunns Limited and Fairfax Limited. We thought these shares couldn't go any lower in price, so they must go up. We also invested some money into Rio Tinto. This proved to be a wise move as they raced from $40 to $70 during the course of the Game. The major company that made our portfolio rise was Bradken. We bought 10,500 shares while Bradken was around $1.10…At the end of the Game they finished around $4 per share. Our ASX Game strategy was pretty basic, we just bought shares that were cheap and we didn't over-think the Game too much."

"…The first strategy we used was to buy cheap shares under $1.50. This worked because even if the shares only went up in value a little bit, we had a vast quantity of them which would give us a greater profit. The second strategy we used was to stick with the shares we had for the majority of the Game. 2009 National Chinese Eisteddfod
On Saturday the 30th a team of boys from Years 8 and 9 representing Sydney Boys High School went to Strathfield Girls High to compete in the annual Chinese Eisteddfod Competition. The competition was scheduled to start at 9am, so we arrived at 8:30. We were very nervous as we could hear other teams reciting their poems loudly, so before the competition started, Miss Zhang gathered everyone for one last practice. At 9am, we lined up to go into the hall where the actual competition took place. It was very boring at the beginning as the hosts were introducing the adjudicators and the VIPs. After that, team 2 was told to go on the stage to recite their poem as team 1 didn't show up. We were team 6, and when it was our turn to go on the stage, I felt tiny standing on the big stage. Despite being very nervous, we performed very well. After all the teams had finished reciting their poems, one of the adjudicators went onto the stage and gave a short speech before reading out the results. We came 2nd and Strathfield Girls High came 1st but they only beat us by a little bit. We were rewarded with a trophy and we passed it around for everyone to see.

After the group competition, there was also the individual competition. Even though there were a few Year 8s who signed up for individual, but because of the Armidale trip, I happened to be the only one from Year 8 who actually attended the individual. I was in the 13 to 15 year old Group B, which was upstairs in room 4 and was from 11:30 to 12:10. The group consisted of 15 people, many of whom were girls and I was third last on the list.

There were three adjudicators sitting at the back of the classroom, and when our number was called, we could then recite our poem. There were a few girls from Strathfield Girls High that did outstandingly in my opinion, so I thought I had no chance of winning. Finally, my number was called, and I recited my poem with a lot of emotion, and I really tried hard to do well. When the results were given out by the adjudicators, I was so relieved and pleased when I heard that I came 2nd. The person who came 1st was a girl from Strathfield Girls High. In the end, after the group was gathered for a photo shoot, I went and collected my prize money and my silver medal.

Congratulations to all the of the team members who participated in the competition, and thank you for all the hard training they have been through in the past months. We enjoyed the experience, and next year, our goal will be to achieve the best.

Hi, it's me again! Let's start with the Year 8 and 9 combined group.

To tell you the truth, the reason that we had an AWESOME combined group was due, ironically, to the slackness of Year 9. Originally only seven people registered to be in the group. This was a far cry to the response from Year 8 and a far shout from the flood of responses from Year 10. However, even after Ms Zhang combined the Year 8 and 9 groups together we still had people who wouldn't be able to make it on the day! Who knew that a rugby game in Armidale (an 8 hour drive) could affect attendance to the Chinese Eisteddfod (a 10 minute drive). Maybe it was the threat of swine flu that mixed things up and made people think that it was easier being at Armidale than at Strathfield Girls High School.

Practice for the big occasion wasn't that smooth either. Some Year 9s slacked off, some Year 8s slacked off and were kicked out, and some had addled minds as described in the previous paragraph. However, the Year 8s added spice to our group, one that would prove invaluable on the day (when Jeff uttered two Chinese words (bow) on that Saturday, some parents couldn't stop laughing). No, the real advantage of having a mixed group was the large variety of sounds and expressions.

In the end, our performance was flawless, due to the amount of hard work put in by Ms Zhang. After a nervous wait, our group was awarded second, one better than last year. Being in a different group, the others in Year 10 managed to attain second place as well. We were both beaten by groups who had a huge advantage over us. This fact demonstrates the dedication and amount of hard work that Ms Zhang puts into both groups.

I also had an individual recitation this year. Unfortunately, I was the only one game enough in my Year to tackle this challenge again. Unlike the group preparation, preparation for my individual recitation went smoothly, alternating from sessions with Ms Zhang and sessions with my mother. Their combined efforts would eventually lead to something.

As I sat waiting to say my poem (The Grass Song), I realised that I was sitting next to the girl who had beaten me last year! Actually I'd already known and I'd acquainted myself with her. For all her maturity, Mia was still only a Year 8 student at Cherrybrook, but she was the sweetest person you'd ever meet. Anyway, as we wished each other luck, I was attacked by a fit of coughing. All my plans had fallen apart now, and my primary goal was to finish reciting my poem without coughing.

To make matters worse, I was in the best group of speakers (many were born overseas and spoke Chinese fluently). After finishing my poem, I achieved a solid third place. I felt good after that, beating the 15 speakers in my group. Mia came first again. I'd really like to thank Ms Zhang for making this all possible for me and for helping me every step of the way.

Da Vinci Decathlon Results

Last Tuesday 2nd June Ms Barr had the pleasure of accompanying Year 9 and Year 10 teams to Knox Grammar at Wahroonga to compete in the all-day event against approximately 50 schools in each division. Patrick Krakovsky, Suman Prusty, Jonathon Adhika, Ming Chin, Edward Naoumov, Abeer Khan, Jamian Vuong and Christopher Chiam achieved bronze – a wonderful result given the difficulty of the tournament and the skill of the other competitors. The Year 10 team was disappointed to be denied their 3rd place which was awarded to Knox after a tied result required a countback. These students- Samuel Beston, Dawen Shi, Nikhil Autur, Samir Kinger, Max Wei, Austin Ly, Ashwin Rudder and Dominic Nguyen were outstanding across all disciplines on the day. They were most gracious about the result.

On Thursday 4th June, Ms Eggleton was proud to accompany Years 7 and 8 teams to the same event. Once again, the boys performed well, particularly as only 4 of the 16 students had participated previously. The Year 7 group managed to come 1st in the mathematics section and 11th in the overall tournament. Congratulations to Tom Du, Henry Feng., Michael Hauser, Anes Karahasan, Joseph Lui, Ryan Rawnak, Robert Tan, Sida Wang. Year 8 managed 13th overall, with great results in Engineering, Art and Poetry, Maths and Forensics. Last Thursday as rain threatened, eight Year 7 and eight Year 8 travelled by train with Ms Eggleton to Knox Grammar to attend the Da Vinci Decathlon. We competed against 43 other teams each in 10 domains ranging from Creative Producers to Maths and General Knowledge to Art and Poetry.

The Year 7 team were proud to come 1st in Maths and 11th overall. Our overall score was not helped by confusing crocheting with croquet in the Creative Producers section. We wonder what the examiners were thinking!

It was a very enjoyable day helped by the pizza for lunch. We truly thank Ms Eggleton not only for her help and support on the day but also during the preparations over the last 2 terms and Dr Jaggar for supporting this event.

The composition of these panels includes a school community member who must be trained in specific selection panel procedures. Volleyball

16s break through to win GOLD
After winning 6 silver medals through the 2008 volleyball season the 16As have broken through to win their first gold medal at last Sunday's NSW Schools Volleyball Tournament. It was a good day for our 2 16s teams with the 16Bs winning silver.

In the Open division Ist Grade made it through the day undefeated to earn another gold medal and post one of Sydney High's best tournament finishes. It was a good effort from the boys with four players away representing NSW.

The 15A and B teams played well and were competitive all day. The 15As finished highest on the table in 3rd place.

GPS competition starts on Saturday 13th against Scots.

Lak Saviya Mufti and BBQ

This coming Tuesday the 16th of June; the Sydney High Community Service Committee will be holding a Mufti Day and BBQ for Lak Saviya. The Lak Saviya Foundation seeks to improve the quality of life of the needy in Sri Lanka, in particular during the aftermath of the Boxing Day Tsunami of 2004, in which whole communities in Sri Lanka were wiped out and are still in the process of rebuilding. Sydney High have had an ongoing relationship with a school affected by the Tsunami; Kahawa Rathnasara Maha Vidyalaya had most of its equipment and furniture destroyed or severely damaged due to the water levels which had risen above the second storey of the school, but fortunately many of the buildings still remain. Since then Sydney High students have donated more than $4000 which has gone straight into the school's rebuilding programme.

The community Service team hopes that fellow Sydney High students get behind this cause and become more aware global citizens. All you need to do is wear mufti next Tuesday and donate $2, and/or buy a Sausage and Drink at the BBQ.

Music Notices

Music Camp
Our Annual Music Camp held last Tuesday to Thursday at Galston Gorge was a huge success. Overall, 2009 music camp was a fantastic experience. Imagine 9 hours of music every day, being fed continually, getting free cake and chocolate milk, playing ping pong and watching the State of Origin. With a highly talented and professional group of tutors in attendance, all areas of expertise were covered. The tutors also hosted a wonderful workshop and concert, joined by Steve Comninos (Yr 7) on the trombone in one item. On our return from the camp, we were treated to a sausage sizzle prepared by the Music Supporters Group. The camp concert was brilliant, opening with the Senior Concert Band playing Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame, conducted by Thomas Wilson. A special thank you to Mr Jerry Phillipson for being the MC for the night, and to Mr Peter Heath who made a guest appearance flamboyantly directing the Intermediate Stage Band. Outstanding performances were given by every ensemble including a special item arranged, performed, and acted by the outgoing Year 12 students. The evening culminated with a roof raising rendition of an ABBA medley as all students performed and parents joined in to sing in the encore performance.

We would like to thank the music staff and parent group for their efforts and look forward to future music events.

Cabaret Night
Our Annual Cabaret Night will be held on Saturday the 27th of June 2009 this term with the all day Jazz workshop on Friday the 26th of June for all members of the Stage Band. This will be an entertaining evening. All members of Stage Band, Senior Concert Band and Symphony Orchestra will be involved on Cabaret Night.

There will be a combined Music Workshop with SGHS for HSC Elective Music students on Tuesday the 16th of June 2009 from 3:30-5:30pm in their Campbell Hall (SGHS). The workshop will be a great opportunity for the students from both schools to hear and critique each other and have feedback on their own performances. Students in HSC Music 1, Music 2 and Music Extension will each present one piece on the day.

The Sydney University United Nations Society has invited us to attend the annual Schools’ Model United Nations (SUSMUN). The event is open to teams of 2 from years 10-12. Each team will represent a country in one of six simulated UN committees dealing with contemporary international relations challenges. Handbooks will be provided to participants to assist competitors

The event will run on Saturday 1 August 2009 and there is no competition costs to students.

This is a fantastic even for developing matter knowledge as well as reinforcing presentation, argumentative and problem-solving skills. I strongly encourage all boys to consider their participation in this competition.

BA (Hons), Med (Hons), PhD, MAPS Child & Educational Psychologist Assoc. Professor (University of Sydney)

Dr Andrew Martin is an Educational Psychologist specialising in student motivation and achievement. His research has won international awards and in 2003 he was listed in The Bulletin magazine's 'SMART 100 Australians' (and in the Top 10 in the field of Education). His first book, How to Motivate Your Child for School and Beyond (2003, Random House Australia), provides practical strategies for parents and teachers to motivate and engage children. His new title, How To Help Your Child Fly Through Life: The 20 Big Issues (2005, Random House Australia), answers the most important educational questions facing parents and their children today.
